  • Gym was a 'honey;' memories sweet, too

    Betty Williamson, Correspondent|Updated Jan 29, 2022

The swings, slides, and teeter-totters on the Dora school playground in 1971 and 1972 provided front-row seats for the grandest construction project that my classmates and I had ever seen. While we chose up sides for recess games and eagerly implored "Red Rover, Red Rover" to send someone right over, we got to watch earth movers and cranes and bricklayers all hard at work on what would become our new gymnasium. That building, officially named the Guy Luscombe Gymnasium more...

  • Our people: Traveling, crafting and making friends

    Elizabeth Larsen, Correspondent|Updated Jan 29, 2022

Lisa Howard has lived all over. From California, Texas, Arkansas, even a few years in England, the Alabama native has made herself a home in many different places. When she and her family came here in 2012 for her husband's military assignment at Cannon Air Force Base, she had no idea what Clovis had in store for her – or what she had in store for Clovis. But after just a few years in the area, when her husband retired from the Air Force and took a civilian position on b...

  • Cats, Lady Cats fall in District 4-5A openers

the Staff of The News|Updated Jan 29, 2022

CLOVIS - Carlsbad's girls have specialized in holding their opponents to low point totals this season. Tuesday night at The Rock, Clovis High held the Cavegirls in check, but their inability to muster much offense of their own proved costly in a 29-22 loss in the District 4-5A opener for both teams. Neither team was able to muster as much as 10 points in any quarter, but the Cavegirls (18-4 overall) held the Lady Wildcats (13-6) to just two points in the final stanza to seal...

Playing for only the second time since Jan. 12, the Rams pulled away in the second half to beat Jal 55-46 on Tuesday night at the Ram Athletic Center. • Opinion: Cannabis detrimental to workers

    Rube Render, Local columnist|Updated Jan 29, 2022

Recreational marijuana is a fait accompli in New Mexico. Full disclosure: I am a supporter of medical marijuana and have voted for it in the past. We currently use many more powerful drugs to control pain and distress (oxycodone is one of these) and I believe that if cancer patients and those with PTSD can find relief with medical marijuana, they have my support. I am not now and have never been in favor of recreational marijuana. New Mexico has a state Cannabis Control...

  • Letter to the editor - Jan. 30

    Updated Jan 29, 2022

Library shooting survivor: Oppose early parole for killer I am reaching out for your help please. I am a survivor of the Clovis library shooting in 2017. My family and I oppose Senate Bill 43 making its way through the state Legislature. I want people to sign this petition: www.change.org/p/block-bill-that-would-allow-parole-for-clovis-carver-library-mass-shooter I oppose SB 43 because requiring parole eligibility after only 15 years would be unjust and demeaning. Fifteen years is nowhere near proportionate to crimes like...

  • Opinion: Tune out bogus claims of rampant voter fraud

    Walter Rubel, Syndicated content|Updated Jan 29, 2022

Republican lawmakers in New Mexico have alleged for years that our elections are plagued by massive voter fraud. They finally had their chance to prove it in 2011, with Susana Martinez as governor and Dianna Duran as secretary of state. Duran was the first Republican secretary of state since E.A. Perrault in 1929. And, she came into office bound and determined to prove that claims of rampant voter fraud were real. Enlisting the help of the State Police, they combed through seven years of voter registration records, from 2003...

  • Opinion: 'Implicit assumption' most common bigotry

    Leonard Pitts, Syndicated content|Updated Jan 29, 2022

It does not exactly break your heart to see Mitch McConnell used as a pinata. He is a man of uniquely pious hypocrisy, able to affect moist-eyed sincerity while ruthlessly chopping the legs out from under democracy. Whether it is stealing Supreme Court seats or defending an indefensible president, his superpower is the uncanny ability to lie, to know that you know he’s lying and yet to keep a straight face through it all. So one does not weep to see him smacked about, as h...

  • Opinion: Race shouldn't be a big factor in art appreciation

    Christine Flowers, Syndicated content|Updated Jan 29, 2022

The other day, I went to a movie, and the experience moved me to tears. It was the most recent version of “Macbeth,” brought to the screen by the great Denzel Washington, appearing alongside a combination of veteran actors (like the sublime Frances McDormand as Lady Macbeth) and talented newcomers. That, added to the amazing black and white cinematography, lifted this film to the next level. As I was walking home, something dawned on me. Denzel Washington is a Black man tha...

  • Opinion: Biden press conference embarrassment

    Michael Reagan, Syndicated content|Updated Jan 29, 2022

Joe Biden didn’t disappoint me. At his press conference this month he was the same old strange guy with the same old predictable excuses for one of the most hapless rookie presidential years in history. The liberal media reporters didn’t disappoint me. I knew they’d ask a bunch of friendly questions about issues most of the American people don’t care about – and they did. Who did disappoint me at that endless Q&A session with the cognitively challenged leader of the Free World...

  • Opinion: Judge's retirement an opportunity to heal some of nation's divide

    St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Syndicated content|Updated Jan 29, 2022

Maybe it’s just wishful thinking, but Justice Stephen Breyer’s retirement announcement offers Republicans a real opportunity. No, not the opportunity to install yet another hard-right conservative on the bench. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell already can claim victory for the kinds of obstructionist and unfair manipulation that yielded the court’s current lopsided split favoring conservatives. Now is the moment for Republicans to make a move to save this badly divided nation from splitting even further. Would it be as...

CLOVIS — The most recent wave of COVID-19 has doubled the number of positive cases in the Clovis Municipal School District. • City leaders work toward LEDA policy changes

    Steve Hansen, Staff writer|Updated Jan 29, 2022

CLOVIS -- Since voters chose to make retail businesses in Clovis eligible to receive Local Economic Development Act (LEDA) assistance, city economic development leaders have been working on changes in policy and branding. The idea is to reflect the wider opportunities to encourage new businesses and expansion of existing firms. In December, the city’s Economic Incentive Board appointed a LEDA task force to focus on the addition of retail businesses. After a task force meeting Monday, City Manager Justin Howalt said, the group...
