  • Animal rescue calls out Clovis

Grant McGee, The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 1, 2023

A Denver-area animal rescue group is targeting Clovis’ animal shelter as a place where there is a “devastating illness problem” and needs to take steps to prevent more problems in the future. Do Over Dogs alleges on its Facebook page it rescued five dogs from the Clovis shelter that were sick with parvo and in danger of spreading the deadly disease to other animals. “CITY OF CLOVIS! GET YOUR (expletive) TOGETHER!” the rescue group posted on Jan. 23. “(P)uppies have tested positive for parvo and are in danger of dying. … We...

  • Faith: Whatever the weather, Creator makes 'everything beautiful in its time'

    Curtis Shelburne, Religion columnist|Updated Jan 31, 2023

When I start writing about the weather, my readers might logically suppose that I’m feeling uninspired, dull and unimaginative, and short of things to write about. They would be right. My apologies. Strange. I just looked back at a few old columns (I’ve got well over a thousand of them), and I see that on several occasions, about this time of year, I’ve written about the weather. So maybe I’m on track. And so is the year. Right on track. Christmas is over. That’s depressin...

  • Faith: Still enjoying the moment with our tree

    Patti Dobson, Religion columnist|Updated Jan 31, 2023

Our Christmas tree is still up. Neither one of us is in any great hurry to take it apart and put it in the duct-taped box. Clearly, since it’s February. In the wee hours each morning, I open the curtains and plug in the tree. I putter around the living room, caffeinating myself, in the glow of multi-colored lights. I find them as peaceful as they are beautiful. When I was a kid, it took f-o-r-e-v-e-r for Christmas to get here. Or longer. Now, I blink and Valentine’s stuff is...

  • Faith: Faith is not the absence of fear

    Gordon Runyan, Religion columnist|Updated Jan 31, 2023

When you read the Psalms, right away you see David calling to God for rescue from his enemies. They have surrounded him and are threatening his life. This starts in Psalm 2. David cries out to God. I don’t see him taking the time to light a candle or even get to his favorite prayer spot. Right where he is, he’s dropping to his knees, hands reaching toward heaven. When he speaks, it’s not in some measured and gentlemanly King James formality. He’s screaming. He hurts his throat. “Lord, how many are my foes!” (Psalm 3:1)...

  • Texico girls move to 2-0 in 6-2A with 41-38 win

the Staff of The News|Updated Jan 31, 2023

SANTA ROSA – Maybe it’s not quite time to break up those Lady Wolverines. Nevertheless, the Texico girls are off to a solid start in District 6-2A. Senior Catelyn Breshears and junior Kaya New combined for all seven Texico 3-pointers on Saturday as the Lady Wolverines turned back Santa Rosa 41-38. Texico (9-12, 2-0 district) led virtually all the way and held on down the stretch. Breshears finished with four 3-balls and 22 points while New scored all nine of hers on 3-pointers for Texico, which led 27-18 at halftime. Hig...

  • Food fundraisers on tap for February

    Betty Williamson, Local columnist|Updated Jan 31, 2023

When February offers up no fewer than four fetching food fundraisers, what’s a food fundraiser fanatic to do but fork over the facts? The festivities kick off this Saturday when the Clovis Noonday Kiwanis Club will be flipping flapjacks for its 71st annual Pancake Day that runs from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Clovis High School cafeteria. The menu includes pancakes, sage sausage, milk, juice, and coffee. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for children ages 4-10. Tots 3 and under ca...

  • Freshman shoots ENMU women past UTPB

the Staff of The News|Updated Jan 31, 2023

ODESSA, Texas – When Eastern New Mexico University’s Corin Camara comes into the game, you know you’ll almost surely see at least one 3-point attempt going up. Sometimes she’s on, sometimes not. Saturday, the freshman guard from Hanford, Calif. helped dig Eastern New Mexico University’s women out of an early 8-2 hole and the Greyhounds went on to a 63-50 Lone Star Conference victory over Texas-Permian Basin. Camara hit three consecutive 3s to push the Hounds in front 11-8. She went 5-of-12 for the contest from distance,...

  • Opinion: Biden handling of Ukraine clueless

    Michael Reagan, Syndicated content|Updated Jan 31, 2023

It’s a stretch, but I think I know the real reason the FBI raided Mar-a-Lago. We’ve been told for months that the DOJ ordered a search of Donald Trump’s home in Florida because he was not turning over a bunch of classified documents to the National Archives fast enough. Supposedly, the ex-president was violating the Presidential Records Act by hoarding boxes of “Top Secret” documents in his game room and Melania’s closet. But I believe the raid last August at Mar-a-Lago...

  • Opinion: Retaining leaders, teachers may require thinking outside box

    InsideSources.com, Syndicated content|Updated Jan 31, 2023

Recent headlines have brought news of declining student performance in reading and math across the country. We could see it coming. Student outcome scores have been plateauing over the last decade. Then COVID hit. The results from the previous two years are as bad as we thought they would be. A few questions are top of mind. What are we doing about it, and is it — and will it be — enough? And will the concern last into the future so that we don’t forget about this in a year or two? There is a lot at stake if we don’t get thi...

  • Opinion: DeSantis endearing self to MAGA crowd

    Elwood Watson, Syndicated content|Updated Jan 31, 2023

In his ongoing attacks on what he describes as “woke politics,” Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has denied permission for an African American history course to be taught in Florida public high schools. NAACP Director Ivory Toldson condemned the course’s rejection, calling DeSantis’ decision a “dereliction of his duty to ensure equitable education for all Floridians.” “Dismissing this important subject as lacking ‘educational value’ defies centuries of evidence to the contrary,” To...

  • Public Education Secretary Kurt Steinhaus retires

The Santa Fe New Mexican, Syndicated content|Updated Jan 31, 2023

It's almost as if Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham's Cabinet has sprung a leak. Three Cabinet secretaries have said they were departing within the past week - the most recent being Public Education Secretary Kurt Steinhaus, whose retirement was announced Saturday in a news release from the Governor's Office. Steinhaus, a Portales native, follows John Garcia and Dr. David Scrase, who last week said they were leaving the General Services and Human Services departments, respectively....

the Staff of The News|Updated Jan 31, 2023

A lot of people knew Melinda Shaw, a lot of people liked her and a lot of people will miss her. That's what friends and co-workers of the Melrose woman said about her after learning she died Saturday night in Lea County. New Mexico State Police late Monday had not released any details about the vehicle accident that happened about 10 p.m. Saturday north of Lovington. Shaw worked at Regions One and Three EMS Services in Clovis. Her home was in Melrose where she worked as an...
