  • Big innings carry Hounds to softball wins

THE STAFF OF THE NEWS|Updated Feb 6, 2024

LOS LUNAS – It was a day of crooked numbers for Eastern New Mexico University’s softball team on Friday. The Greyhounds put together six innings of three or more runs in routing Colorado State-Pueblo 15-8 and Colorado-Colorado Springs 11-3 in a season-opening South Central Region crossover event, hosted by Western New Mexico. The Hounds were slated to face Fort Lewis and Adams State on Saturday before closing out the three-day event against New Mexico Highlands today. ENMU scored 14 runs in the first three innings aga...

  • Privileged to have a Bill Vance original bolo tie

    Karl Terry, Local columnist|Updated Feb 3, 2024

I’m privileged to have a Bill Vance original bolo tie and I’m not certain how I came to possess it. Just for the record, I did not steal it or find it on the street, but the true story of how it came into my possession is a bit foggy. First let me talk about the tie and then I’ll get to the story. Bill Vance was a gentleman who lived in Portales most of his life and I suspect was not a stranger to much of anyone in town. I knew his family because his youngest daughter Jill...

  • Dora pulls away from Broncos

the Staff of The News|Updated Feb 3, 2024

DORA – Dora’s boys had their hands full with District 4-1A and Roosevelt County rival Floyd on Friday night. Leading by just six points, the Coyotes finally took control in the final stanza, outscoring the Broncos 11-0 for a 48-31 victory. Junior Aaron Combs tallied a personal-bet 21 points and senior Cole Kircher added 13 for Dora (11-7, 3-0 district). Senior Isaias Nieto notched 13 points and senior Drew Essary added 10 for Floyd (7-9, 0-3). In other Friday boys action: Farwell 78, Boys Ranch 16 – At Boys Ranch, the red-h...

  • Rams, Lady Rams notch victories against Goddard

the Staff of The News|Updated Feb 3, 2024

ROSWELL – It wasn’t pretty, but Portales High’s girls got what they needed to start their District 4-4A slate. Trailing 5-4 early, the Lady Rams held Roswell Goddard to four points the rest of the half, then pulled away in the final stanza for a 49-34 victory over the Lady Rockets on Friday night. The early surge gave PHS (16-5 overall) a 23-9 cushion at halftime, and that proved to be important when Goddard (7-13) pulled to within five points with a strong fourth quarter. Junior guard Myleigh Banda led the Lady Rams, going 9...

  • Top-ranked Lady Eagles cruise to victory over CHS

Dave Wagner, The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 3, 2024

Clovis High's girls started off well against Hobbs on Friday night, and the Lady Wildcats had another good stretch which spanned the third and fourth quarters. The rest of the way, it was all Lady Eagles as they cruised to a 72-42 victory in a District 4-5A matchup at Rock Staubus Gym. No doubt, the Lady Cats played hard, but at 17-5 (0-2 district) they've put themselves in a bit of a hole with the next three of four remaining regular-season contests on the road. "We've got...

  • Bad quarter, free throws kill Cats in loss at Hobbs

the Staff of The News|Updated Feb 3, 2024

HOBBS – On paper, this would appear to be the year to get the Hobbs Eagles. Clovis High’s boys weren’t able to do it on Friday night, suffering through a four-point second quarter and eventually dropping a 68-67 decision in District 4-5A action. Junior guard Abraham Pena and sophomore guard Braylon Vega scored 17 points each while 6-foot-10 junior center Parker Henderson added 13 as Hobbs (9-13, 1-1 district) held on late for the win. “We had a 3-point look that missed, and an offensive rebound (basket) cut it to one as time...

  • ENMU sweeps Angelo

Dave Wagner, The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 3, 2024

Time’s running out for Eastern New Mexico University’s women to make a run at the Lone Star Conference postseason tournament. The Greyhounds certainly took a step in the right direction on Thursday night, though, clamping down on Angelo State in the second half to notch a 60-55 victory over the Rambelles at Greyhound Arena. Senior guard/forward Deja Adrian capped an 18-point night by knocking down four free throws in the final 30 seconds for the Greyhounds (7-12, 3-10 LSC). Junior forward Ishauna Hunter added 17 points, and...

  • Hounds walk off No. 1 Angelo State to earn split

the Staff of The News|Updated Feb 3, 2024

It’s been a while since Eastern New Mexico University’s baseball team has beaten Angelo State. Down to their final out, the Greyhounds tied the second game of Friday’s Lone Star Conference and season-opening doubleheader against the Rams on an RBI triple by junior first baseman Beau Preston, who then scored the game-winner on a wild pitch for a 4-3 victory and a split at Greyhound Field. The Rams, defending NCAA Division II champions and ranked No. 1 in the preseason, came from behind to win the first of the two seven...

  • Donating blood chance to save human lives

    Betty Williamson, Local columnist|Updated Feb 3, 2024

With about an hour of time — much of it spent reclining, sipping a drink, and eating a snack — each of us has the power to save (get this) up to three human lives. And yet the American Red Cross says only 3% of us Americans donate blood in a typical year. Prior to last month, I was among the 97% who had not donated — well, at least not in a very long time. After my last two tries were failed attempts — once in 2001 and again in 2009 — I had decided that donating blood was...

  • Opinion: New Mexico's left comes for oil and gas

    Paul Gessing, Guest columnist|Updated Feb 3, 2024

In recent years the “left” including most, but not all in the Democratic Party have turned sharply against traditional energy sources. Despite New Mexico’s status as a leading energy state, it has not been exempted from this trend. In fact, while New Mexico has seen an unprecedented oil and gas boom (which has unlocked unprecedented government revenues) New Mexico’s political leadership has become virulently anti-energy. This is true for all five members of its congres...

  • Opinion: Best option: Leave Syria, Iraq now

    Rube Render, Local columnist|Updated Feb 3, 2024

For the last few weeks, U.S. troops stationed in Syria and Iraq have been taking in-coming rocket, missile and drone attacks. News reports claimed that more than 140 attacks on American troops in Iraq and Syria had been carried out with 70 members wounded and no fatalities. The pentagon faced a quandary that although a response of some kind was required, care had to be taken to ensure that the response taken would not escalate the conflict into a full-blown war. Officials...

  • Opinion: Feeling a bit of schadenfreude at Biden speech

    Christine Flowers, Syndicated content|Updated Feb 3, 2024

Schadenfreude is a fabulous word. It means deriving happiness from the pain of others or in literal terms, “joy from damage.” And it’s what I felt watching Joe Biden try and make his grand promises about restoring abortion rights to supporters last month in Virginia. The campaign appearance was supposed to be a victory walk for the president, who is garnering fairly lukewarm support from Democrats. There is no great love for a very old man who is displaying the normal physi...

  • Opinion: Our rights are imaginary? Don't be barbaric

    Kent McManigal, Local columnist|Updated Feb 3, 2024

It is often said there are two kinds of people. What kinds? It depends on the point being made. Yet, it’s usually true, if incomplete. In this case, I’m talking about two kinds of people where liberty is concerned. There are people who are authoritarian and people who are libertarian; those who want everyone else controlled and those who don’t feel any such need. Politics boils down to controlling someone in some way, so most politics is authoritarian. Maybe all politics. Both...

the Staff of The News|Updated Feb 3, 2024

SANTA FE — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on Thursday announced two proposed rules “to ensure that certain per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), also known as ‘forever chemicals,’ are classified as hazardous waste under federal law,” according to an EPA news release. • Fifth-grader takes second straight Bee

Madison Willis, The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 3, 2024

Who says "gossip" never benefited anyone? It helped Eleanor Shuler win her second straight Roosevelt County spelling bee on Jan. 18. That was the winning word for the fifth-grader who competed against nine other spellers at Eastern New Mexico University's Buchanan Hall. After finishing 12th in the state spelling bee a year ago, Eleanor said she's had a fire in her stomach to strive higher this year. "The spelling bee means a lot to me because I've put in a lot of work to get...

  • Cannabis grant providing 11 'high-paying' jobs

Grant McGee, The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 3, 2024

Clovis City commissioners voted unanimously Thursday to help a Clovis cannabis business gain access to a $90,000 grant from the state. Vana LLC was granted state Local Economic Development Act funds last year. Clovis City Manager Justin Howalt advised the city’s Economic Incentive Board in November that the city was requested to act as the fiscal agent to distribute the funds over five years because the state does not have a mechanism to provide funds directly to an applicant once approved. Jim Lucero from the Region 6 E...
