PORTALES — Daycare workers who admitted to leaving two toddlers in a hot car in July 2017 were found guilty Tuesday of charges that could send them to prison for up to 36 years. Mary and Sandi Taylor were immediately remanded into custody following the Roosevelt County jury’s guilty verdict, which came about four hours after it began deliberating. The courtroom filled with tears on both sides when the verdict was announced. “(I’m) very glad to see we’re taking child abuse in... Full story

  • Wage hike should be tied to inflation

    Tom McDonald|Updated Feb 5, 2019

This will be the year in which New Mexico’s minimum wage will go up, probably dramatically. The Democrats will make sure of that. Moreover, this year’s legislative session is an opportunity to put this perennial issue to rest for good — by tying it to inflation. Politics, not smart regulations, have gotten us to where we are now. Because of political pendulum swings between Democratic and Republican control, when the minimum wage is raised, and by how much, depends on who’s in power; the Republicans typically oppose minimum...

  • Market always superior to government

    Kent McManigal|Updated Feb 5, 2019

Last week, a local business delivered to my home — even though I didn’t ask and it wasn’t expected. Just to be nice and to make a good impression. And it worked. This reminded me of the difference between market services and government “services” and why I always prefer the market. With a market business, if I don’t like their service I can choose to not use them. I can use a competitor or do without. They know you have a choice, so If they want to stay in business th...

  • Registering as organ donor a life-saving act

    The Taos News|Updated Feb 5, 2019

Recently, a young man from Vail, Colorado, died in an avalanche at Taos Ski Valley. He was already a registered organ donor. Corey Borg-Massanari’s last act on earth, because of his caring forethought, gave new life and hope to 11 other people, strangers he will never know. The doctors, nurses and other staff who cared for the 22-year-old in his final hours and then ensured his organs were safely transported to awaiting recipients lined the halls at University of New Mexico Medical Center in Albuquerque to pay their r...

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Feb 5, 2019

PORTALES — The Roosevelt County Commission took its first step toward negotiating a new shared services agreement with the city of Portales on Tuesday, selecting the commission’s vice chair Matthew Hunton to join County Manager Amber Hamilton in those negotiations. Last month the Portales City Council unanimously voted to terminate the existing joint powers agreement between the two municipalities covering the Portales Police Department’s use of a county-owned building, necessitating Tuesday’s selection by the commiss...

  • Parks committee settles on signs

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Feb 5, 2019

CLOVIS — A months-long process was finished, mostly, on Monday as the Parks, Recreation and Beautification Committee agreed on new signs for the various parks. The committee decided not to make any decisions on signage for Colonial Park Golf Course, as the city is in the process of picking new management and it didn’t feel right to lock a new golf course manager into policy. The new park signage doesn’t require city commission approval. The city has 12 areas it considers public parks, along with the golf course, various ball...

  • Books still prizes at Cameo Elementary

    Cindy Kleyn-Kennedy|Updated Feb 5, 2019

Dropping by Cameo Elementary recently near the end of a school day, I came upon Cameo teachers organizing furniture and technology devices in the school’s multi-purpose room. There was a lot of activity and energy in the air; the event was “Bingo For Books” that would be held that evening. Talking to veteran teachers Keith and Kathryn Sacane, who were connecting a digital tablet to the projector for a giant image on the wall, they filled in the blanks. Keith Sacane, who served...

    Betty Williamson|Updated Feb 5, 2019

Fifty years ago - in the early spring of 1969 - Jackie Cooper Ingle was a freshman at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, an elementary education major from Kenna who happened to be an avid Greyhound basketball fan. She was not alone. "I remember the lines to get into the arena wrapped around the complex," she said. "The gym was packed; every seat was taken with standing room only. You didn't dare go get popcorn or you would lose your seat. The team and the games were...

  • Teacher shortage affecting region

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Feb 5, 2019

Across the state of New Mexico and the entire country, several factors have brought down the number of high school and college students looking to enter the field of education. It’s created a nationwide teacher shortage that is affecting local school districts, especially Clovis Municipal Schools. According to the 2018 New Mexico Educator Vacancy Report prepared in October by the New Mexico State University College of Education Southwest Outreach Academic Research Lab: There were 33 percent fewer students completing educator...

  • Another rematch for Texico boys

    Peter Stein, Staff writer|Updated Feb 5, 2019

SANTA ROSA — For Texico’s boys basketball team, it’s a week book-ended by rematches. Last Saturday the Wolverines visited Santa Rosa, the team they beat to win last year’s District 5-3A championship. This Saturday beginning at 5 p.m., the Wolves are hosting Pecos — the team that beat them in last year’s state 3A championship game, denying them a 30-0 season. Texico (19-3 overall, 2-0 district) would like the second rematch to go like the first, which they won 55-49 in overtime. “Definitely Santa Rosa was prepared for...

GRADY — The state-ranked Logan girls basketball team jumped to a 16-point lead early and cruised to a 70-33 district victory Thursday over a rebuilding Grady/San Jon/House team. Harlie Roach’s 16 points led the Lady Longhorns’ balanced attack, along with Kesleah Shields’ 14 and Jordan Hines’ 10. Timia Northcutt’s 11 points led the Lady Bronchos. The game featured teams in transition — one dealing with a season-ending injury to a star player and one trying to advance to a more competitive level. Logan, which improved to 1...

  • Rivalry reboot welcome

    Peter Stein, Staff writer|Updated Feb 5, 2019

CLOVIS — Clovis-Hobbs is kind of a legendary hyphenated term around here. The rivalry between schools goes back a way to packed bleachers and gyms of decades past. When ‘Hawbs’ came to town, people flocked to Leon Williams Stadium or to the Rock or even Bell Park. When Clovis made the desert trek to the land of oil derricks and casino winnings, it was a big deal, too. In the days of Jimmy Carter, seeing a Clovis-Hobbs basketball game was like getting tickets for ‘Hamilton’ in New York City during more recent times. Good seat...

Ron Warnick, Quay County Sun|Updated Feb 5, 2019

GRADY — The Bronchos had an upset brewing because of their strategy, but the state-ranked Logan boys basketball team fended it off Thursday during a 70-60 district victory. Logan (16-4 overall, 3-0 in district and ranked fifth in Class 1A) defeated Grady/San Jon/House 84-57 during the Dora Tournament on Dec. 6, with Logan’s Dyson Day scoring 18 points. Bronchos athletic director Alicia Rush, who led the team in place of Jonathan Langan after an ejection the previous game forbid him from coaching Thursday, said her squad was...

The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 5, 2019

RIO RANCHO — Call it a reasonably good opening weekend for Eastern New Mexico University’s softball team and its new head coach Kara Zeiter. The Greyhounds emerged from it with a .500 record and that’s better than it could’ve gone. Eastern wrapped up the final day of the U.S. Bank ENMU Softball Kickoff Classic in Rio Rancho with a twinbill split — a 4-1 win over Oklahoma Baptist in Game 1 and a 7-3 loss to Fort Lewis in Game 2. The Hounds finished the tournament with a record of 2-2 and showed several positive signs mov...
