  • State vaccinating about 9,000 people per day

    Lily Martin, Staff writer|Updated Feb 6, 2021

New Mexico is vaccinating approximately 9,000 people per day, a pace nearly double what the state was doing three weeks ago. This increase is due to a federal vaccine distribution increase of 6% this week on top of a 16% increase last week. The data is according to Dr. Tracie Collins, New Mexico’s Department of Health secretary-designate, and Dr. David Scrase, NM Human Services Department secretary, who gave a vaccine update webinar on Wednesday. On top of the vaccine distribution increase, Collins said a number of new v...

  • TV crime-fighting formula has changed over years

    Karl Terry, Local columnist|Updated Feb 6, 2021

Television crime fighting has come a long way in my time. Not all of the advances are that believable but then again Sgt. Joe Friday never dreamed he could carry a telephone in his pocket. In the days of television’s Dragnet, Friday (Jack Webb) and his partner Bill Gannon (Harry Morgan), cruised the streets of Los Angeles in an unmarked and extremely inconspicuous sedan on the lookout for criminals. They burned a lot of shoe leather and knocked on many a door on the way t...

  • Lady Blue turn back Westbrook

the Staff of The News|Updated Feb 6, 2021

FARWELL — Picking up a game to fill in an open date last weekend, the Farwell girls basketball team found itself in a pretty good battle. The Lady Blue got a pair of 3-pointers and a personal-best 16 points from freshman Chloee Whitten and used a strong second quarter to turn back Westbrook 50-42 in a game played on Jan. 30. Trailing 12-8, Farwell (17-9) outscored Westbrook 19-9 in the second period to gain control, then played the Class 1A Lady Wildcats (21-4) relatively even over the final two segments. Senior Presley A...

  • Road to history: Adventures of a 50-year friendship

    Alisa Boswell-Gore, Correspondent|Updated Feb 6, 2021

A distance of more than 2,000 miles doesn't interfere with a half-century friendship and a shared passion for history. Just ask Linda Sumption of Portales and Jan Metcalf of Bristol, New Hampshire. "We were college friends. I eventually moved to New Mexico, and Janet to Maryland then New Hampshire, but we get together and travel together. You are fortunate if you have friends for a lifetime, and Jan and I have been friends for a lifetime," Sumption said. "We've always shared...

  • St. Ed's sweeps 'Hounds in season-opening series

the Staff of The News|Updated Feb 6, 2021

AUSTIN, Texas — Eastern New Mexico University’s baseball team became the school’s first sports squad to play since last March over the weekend, and the results were not pretty. After getting run-ruled twice on Friday, though, the Greyhounds were a bit more competitive in Saturday’s Lone Star Conference series finale against host St. Edward’s. Designated hitter Blake Holub highlighted the Hilltoppers’ five-run first with a three-run double, and St. Ed’s went on to claim a 6-3 victory. In Friday’s games, St. Edward’s pitche...

  • Farwell teams shore up postseason positions

    Dave Wagner, Staff writer|Updated Feb 6, 2021

BOVINA - The Farwell boys and girls basketball teams weren't about to take any chances of messing up their postseason positions on Friday night. The Steers, with a key clash for the top spot in District 3-2A looming on Tuesday at Olton, made short work of Bovina, rolling to an 87-48 victory over the Mustangs. Meantime, the Lady Blue limited Bovina to eight first-half points - holding the Fillies scoreless for a stretch of nearly eight minutes spanning halftime - en route to a...

  • Melrose's Bailey signs letter of intent with ENMU

    Kevin Wilson, Editor|Updated Feb 6, 2021

MELROSE - An athlete of Devon Bailey's physical stature and ability are rarities for a school the size of Melrose. Bailey realized on Wednesday, while fighting through tears of joy, a chance to play college football was even rarer. Bailey, who hopes to be a few weeks away from an eight-man state championship repeat with the Buffaloes, secured his next step in football by signing a letter of intent with nearby Eastern New Mexico University. The ceremony was held in the...

  • Locals sign with colleges

    Kevin Wilson, Editor|Updated Feb 6, 2021

CLOVIS - While it's easy to get wrapped up in it, Clovis football coach Cal Fullerton insists national signing day is just another day on the calendar. But it's fair to say Wednesday was no ordinary day for the Wildcat program, with three players signing national letters of intent and two of them heading to Division-I University of New Mexico. Ernesto Acuna and Jeston Webskowski, who had both made non-binding verbal commitments to Eastern New Mexico University, had the...

  • 56 players sign letters for ENMU

    Kevin Wilson, Editor|Updated Feb 6, 2021

PORTALES — From a numbers standpoint, national signing day went about like previous ones did for Eastern New Mexico University, with 56 players inking letters of intent to join the Greyhound program. From a talent standpoint, Kelley Lee thinks he might have his most talented signing class ever, in no small part due to the impacts the COVID-19 pandemic has had on football at the Division II level. With Division II schools largely sitting out the 2020-21 season due to the pandemic, and athletes not using up a year of e...

  • CCC board approves 27 additional students eligible for graduation

    Lily Martin, Staff writer|Updated Feb 6, 2021

CLOVIS — The fall semester concluded nearly two months ago at Clovis Community College. But its graduating class has kept growing. The college’s board of trustees on Wednesday approved a list of 27 additional students eligible for graduation, bringing the fall total to 277. The additional 27 students received 14 associate degrees and 13 certificates of achievement. The list of students was submitted separately from the primary list, due to either a late application on the student’s part or because Institutional Resea...

  • Area legislators share stories of session

    Kevin Wilson, Editor|Updated Feb 6, 2021

Area legislators addressed Wednesday’s Clovis-Portales legislative breakfast with stories aplenty on just how strange it was to be in a legislative session where only legislators and staff were on site and everybody else was participating via electronic means. Sen. Stuart Ingle, R-Portales, said every arrival to a room feels like you’re the last person to find out the meeting was canceled. “Inside the building, it’s like a ghost town,” Rep. Randal Crowder, R-Clovis, said. “I can walk all the way through the hallway, ou...

  • Opinion: Another viewpoint: Not sure why I miss State of the State address

    Walt Rubel, Syndicated content|Updated Feb 6, 2021

LAS CRUCES — Today I can report that the state of our state is … TBD. Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham broke with tradition and skipped the State of the State address, which has always been given by the governor a couple of hours after the start of each legislative session. And I’m not sure why. The governor did finally give the address Jan. 26 in a taped speech in which the feed became frozen a few minutes in. The governor was reportedly concerned about both the threat of civil unrest and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. One of th...

  • Opinion: Being black also means community

    Leonard Pitts, Syndicated content|Updated Feb 6, 2021

An open letter to African-American people: February marks the 95th observation of what started as Negro History Week and later became Black History Month. I wanted to use the occasion to talk about what being Black means, about how it feels, being us. Hearing that, you’re probably braced for a litany of depressing statistics, indignities and cruelties. But that’s not why I’m here. No, I want to talk about community. Lately, I find myself thinking a lot about Shonda Rhime...

  • Opinion: America could use another political hero

    Christine Flowers, Syndicated content|Updated Feb 6, 2021

Alexei Navalny is what we need — but no longer have — in the United States: A political hero. We have politicians, some better than others. But each one of them, from the lowliest member of the school board trying to shove critical race theory down our throats, to the president pale in comparison to this Russian dissident. For years, Navalny has led a one-man crusade to expose corruption in Russia. He ran for office, losing in what were universally considered rigged elections....

  • Opinion: Transgender order unfair to girls

    Michael Reagan, Syndicated content|Updated Feb 6, 2021

It’s not right. It’s not fair. And, on top of all that, President Biden’s executive order allowing transgender males to compete against girls is going to destroy girls sports in America. Almost every one of Biden’s many executive orders to date is going to be harmful in some way to our security, our battered economy, or both. Closing the Keystone Pipeline, stopping construction of the border wall and raising the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour are a few of his terribl...

  • Opinion: GOP will survive this upheaval

    Rich Lowry, Syndicated content|Updated Feb 6, 2021

After losing a national election, it’s natural that a political party goes through a period of soul-searching and internal turmoil. The Republican Party, though, has taken it to another level. President Donald Trump brought most of the GOP along for the ride during his conspiracy-fueled attempt to overturn the election. His loyalists have been scouring the landscape searching for Republicans to censure or primary for insufficient loyalty to him. The most famous Republican H...

  • Opinion: Awful words don't warrant time in jail

    David Stevens, Publisher|Updated Feb 6, 2021

Couy Griffin is a divisive, self-aggrandizing politician with a smart mouth that too-often spews hate. But he doesn’t belong in jail for employing disgusting, racist words that are protected by the First Amendment. The case against the leader of the Cowboys for Trump political committee really is about free speech. Griffin was arrested last month, accused of breaching security lines at the U.S. Capitol during the Jan. 6 riot. Authorities have not suggested his actions were v...

  • Flags ordered at half-staff for officer killed in line of duty

the Staff of The News|Updated Feb 6, 2021

SANTA FE — New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham on Thursday afternoon ordered all flags to half-staff in the state until sundown Tuesday in mourning for an officer killed in the line of duty. A Friday release said that New Mexico State Police Officer Darian Jarrott was killed Thursday on Interstate 10. “Officer Jarrott was a dedicated member of the State Police, a young man with so much potential, a father and a son and a public servant, a member of his community whose loss we cannot yet even begin to measure,” Lujan Grish...

  • Downward infection trend continues

the Staff of The News|Updated Feb 6, 2021

The downward trend of COVID-19 infections is continuing in Curry and Roosevelt counties, with neither county reporting a double-digit day in new cases so far in February, and only one double-digit day in the last week. Friday saw the state report 670 new COVID-19 infections, including seven in Curry County and five in Roosevelt. None of the 29 deaths reported were tied to either county. Over the last week, recorded Jan. 30 to Friday, Curry County has reported 48 new cases, with a high of 15 on Jan. 30 and a low of three on...

    Lily Martin, Staff writer|Updated Feb 6, 2021

  • Clovis approves airport name change

    Kevin Wilson, Editor|Updated Feb 6, 2021

CLOVIS — City commissioners on Thursday approved a name change from Clovis Municipal Airport to Clovis Regional Airport. Airport Director James Harris said the airport was already operating as a regional airport, with no other commercial flights offered within 100 miles, and the name would help drive more business to the airport. Commissioners voted 7-0 with Commissioner Helen Casaus making an offhand remark about possible flights to Dallas. Harris said staff was working on it, with Howalt noting an asterisk is needed because...

  • Super Bowl ready

    Kevin Wilson, Editor|Updated Feb 6, 2021

A team looking to establish legendary status will cross paths today with a team full of players who have reached that status already - albeit in a different place. In an unpredictable season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there are some very familiar faces. The Kansas City Chiefs, with quarterback Patrick Mahomes, are looking for their second-consecutive championship. Standing in their way are the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, with quarterback Tom Brady making his 10th Super Bowl...

  • Clovis votes to renew 2011 gross receipts tax

    Kevin Wilson, Editor|Updated Feb 6, 2021

CLOVIS — Facing a 10-year renewal of a gross receipts tax to offset costs for the Eastern New Mexico Rural Water System, Clovis City Commissioners on Thursday decided a little flexibility was a good tool to navigate unknown waters. The commission, by a 7-0 vote, renewed a 0.25% gross receipts tax first implemented in 2011, but added a qualifier that money acquired through the tax could go toward “other city of Clovis water projects.” The original tax was implemented with the caveat that money must go to the ENMRWS — better...
