  • Reaction to change controllable

    Kevin Wilson

A friend of mine had lunch Tuesday in Lubbock. I don't know what she had, but I do know she's probably not going back there. She got a fortune cookie after her meal, and the fortune read, "Did you enjoy your meal? Order another one to go." Really? It's one thing to try to upsell a dessert during the meal, but it's another to upsell a meal during dessert. Sometimes, being overaggressive is a necessary business decision. Sometimes, it's a bad business decision. I'm not sure where my business card decision is going to fall in...

  • Recall election jeopardizes union reforms

If a national symbol exists for the movement to rein in the power of public employee unions, it is Wisconsin’s Republican Gov. Scott Walker. He pushed aggressive measures to curb the power and influence of government unions and now faces a union-funded recall campaign, which, if successful will empower unions and expand their power in Wisconsin and throughout the country. One million petition signatures were submitted last week, seeking the recall of Walker in retribution for his 2010 successful reform agenda which included r...

  • New budget may call for fee hike

As defense budgets grew over the past decade, Congress shrugged off complaints of runaway military health costs and blocked every proposal from the Bush administration to raise TRICARE fees sharply on retirees. Defense budgets have stopped rising, however, and Defense officials today are sounding more confident that Congress will follow last October’s $5-a-month bump in TRICARE Prime enrollment fees for working-age retirees with more substantial fee increases for retirees of all ages. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and A...

Student actor Robert Garcia, who plays the narrative voice of the playwright for, “The Marriage of Bette and Boo,” set for shows today through Sunday at the University Theatre Center, said the story is a satirical look at a young couple’s life. Garcia plays the lead character, Matt, at different stages of his life while also narrating the story. “My...

  • My turn: Science fair judging can be simplified

    Betty Williamson PNT columnist

Science fair season is upon us, and I am sure ours is not the only home sporting a wobbling tri-fold board and a hastily-constructed hypothesis. Due to my inability to say no, I have helped judge a number of elementary science fairs over the years. Based on that experience, I propose a revised scoring rubric with points in only three categories: - Originality. Extra credit for projects that require neither baking soda nor vinegar. - Conviction. I remember a boy whose project theoretically determined the age of fish by...
