There’s a funny GIF out there on the information superhighway of then-Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury surrounded by three or four players. They are on the sidelines watching a play unfold against Oklahoma State. Then, almost in unison, their chins all fall to their chests. Whatever happened was not good. What happened was Patrick Mahomes’ first pass as a Tech quarterback in 2014. The untamed freshman entered the game in the second half for an injured Davis Webb and his fir...

America’s cattle inventory totaled 89.3 million head as of Jan. 1, according to USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) — 3% fewer than the 92.1 million a year ago. NASS’ estimate for all cows and heifers that calved was 38.3 million, down 3% from 2022. After sending 13.1% more beef cows to slaughter last year, the Jan. 1 inventory of beef cows was 28.9 million, down 4% from a year ago and matched the general consensus that the beef cow number would decline by a million head or more. The actual number was a dec...

ROSWELL - One group of Roswell city councilors has rejected the idea of having a TV series featuring Roswell police officers, and the elected officials also have tabled an action to fund a home-building incentive program so that city staff can work instead on a “fee holiday” plan to replace the program. The TV production company’s request and the fate of the Municipal Reimbursement Incentive Program (MIRP) were two of many items that came before the Roswell City Council Legal Committee. Half Moon Pictures LLC of New Jerse...

New federal requirements for a commercial driver’s license took hold this week, and it could have a major impact on anything from hauling grain or livestock to picking up a piece of equipment that’s more than 150 miles from your farm. According to the Illinois Fertilizer and Chemical Association, the new requirements could have a major impact on the movement of inputs. The association says the new requirements mean an entry-level driver must successfully complete a prescribed program on theory and behind-the-wheel ins...
PORTALES – In a game reminiscent of their earlier meeting in Lawton, Okla., the Eastern New Mexico University and Cameron women's basketball team found scoring somewhat hard to come by for a long time on Saturday. The Greyhounds, though, were able to find some rhythm in the third quarter and pulled away to a 60-48 victory at Greyhound Arena in a game between teams trying to crack the Lone Star Conference tournament next month. The Hounds won the first meeting 55-42. It was a...

PORTALES – Eastern New Mexico University's men didn't have much trouble keeping their perfect record at Greyhound Arena intact last week. This week, you can figure that mark will receive a stiff challenge. After whipping Midwestern State on Thursday night, the Greyhounds posted their second victory in a four-game homestand with a 93-63 thumping of last-place Cameron on Saturday, keeping themselves in strong position to lock down a Lone Star Conference tournament berth. They no...

LUBBOCK – Brook Leger is picking up where she left off last season. The Eastern New Mexico University senior right-hander, who led the Greyhounds in every pitching category last spring, earned her third win of the weekend – the hard way – on Sunday as ENMU finished a season-opening 3-2 showing in the Lubbock Sports College Classic softball event with a walkoff 5-4 victory over Colorado-Colorado Springs. Leger, who pitched two complete-game victories earlier in the event, allowed one run on two hits with seven strik...
SAN ANGELO, Texas – The good news for the Eastern New Mexico University baseball team is that the Greyhounds won’t see Lone Star Conference favorite and fifth-ranked Angelo State again this season, unless it’s in the LSC postseason tournament. Still, after getting thumped in the first three games of the season-opening series, the Hounds put themselves in position to salvage Sunday’s finale before the Rams scored four times in the bottom of the seventh to complete the sweep with a 6-3 victory. Angelo State leads ENMU all-tim...
TUCUMCARI -- An animal rescue worker said a pack of dogs had been roaming Tucumcari for weeks prior to the dog attack that killed a man last Wednesday. New Mexico State Police said Stanley Hartt, 64, was attacked and killed by five mixed-breed dogs as he was walking down 11th...

The IRS is so kind. Our most beloved federal agency has delayed until next year a new income-reporting law it has carefully designed to squeeze the last drops of tax revenue out of many of us. The new IRS rule is aimed at millions of self-employed people and small business people who sell goods or services on places like eBay, drive part-time for Uber or earn income through social media companies like Airbnb. Right now, the requirement for having to report this kind of...
Comics survey says: Our newspaper readers love Pickles, they really don’t care for Macanudo, Popeye is hard to read and … please bring back the grocery store inserts and the Parade magazine. We received three dozen responses to the survey that asked readers tell us their favorite comics, their least favorite comics and for suggestions on other comics they’d like to see. OK, that’s not a huge sampling, but when was the last time you responded to a questionnaire that didn’t offer a chance to win a thousand bucks or a new car?...
When Clovis pastor Farril Defoor and Portales school teacher Logan Brown asked for thousands of public emails late last year, it would have surprised no one if Clovis city officials cried “excessively burdensome.” Or, as other public entities have been known to do, they could have claimed the records were all protected under some kind of “attorney-client privilege.” Or that city government didn’t have access to all of its elected officials’ cell phone or personal computer records. It’s sadly routine for most public entities t...
I began with the best of intentions. There was a carton of sour cream that had somehow glued itself to a shelf in my refrigerator. (If it appears I am trying to completely dodge any responsibility for what follows, you are a quick study.) I tugged and pulled and pried and couldn’t budge the darned thing. Never suspecting disaster was moments ahead, I cleared the shelf of all of the remaining detritus. I even tossed out a few things, which isn’t easy for the daughter of Dep...
A Clovis man is working on a documentary about the effects of violence in the city. Daniel Murrell, pastor of The Church of the Brethren in Clovis, said the idea came from a series of funerals. "I was preaching a funeral for a kid and a bunch of kids were there," Murrell said. "Two weeks later I was preaching a funeral for a kid who was at the first funeral. A month later I was preaching a funeral for a kid who was at both of the earlier funerals. "The youth in our community...
There is still more uncertainty than decisive action taking place in the 2023 New Mexico Legislature’s opening weeks, according to the legislators who represent Curry and Roosevelt counties. As of Monday, bills were being assigned to committees as the Legislature entered its third week of a 60-day session. For local lawmakers, the main concern is money. The state, they say, is enjoying another year of increased revenue and the competition for extra funding is fierce. The Legislative Finance Committee has recommended a b...
