  • EPCOR: 'No health concern' from chemicals in wells

    Theresa Davis, Albuquerque Journal|Updated Feb 10, 2020

Clovis' public water utility has decommissioned a "handful" of drinking water wells after finding levels of toxic "forever chemicals." The per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) may have leaked into groundwater supplies from nearby Cannon Air Force Base. For decades, the manmade chemicals were used in firefighting foam for training exercises on the nation's military bases. The utility, EPCOR, notified the New Mexico Environment Department and Clovis residents last week of an "extremely low presence" of the chemicals and t... Full story

  • Three down, possibly two to go for Logan, Melrose

    Kevin Wilson - Staff writer|Updated Feb 10, 2020

By Kevin Wilson EDITOR [email protected] MELROSE - The Melrose and Logan girls basketball teams expect to see each other multiple times between Thursday and the conclusion of the season, and possibly for the Class 1A championship. But for as much as both teams appreciate and respect the other, they're admittedly tired of seeing each other and crossing one potential meeting off the list was a victory in itself. With a big fourth quarter from Karli Webb, the visiting...

  • Clovis tops Coyotes to move to 2-1 in district

    Peter Stein - Staff writer|Updated Feb 8, 2020

With that victory, the Wildcats had gone through the district's Carlsbad-Hobbs-Roswell sequence once, and will start it over again this Tuesday night when they begin their back three by hosting Carlsbad. • Artesia size proves troubling for Rams

    Dave Wagner - Staff Writer|Updated Feb 8, 2020

PORTALES — The Artesia boys basketball roster lists five players at 6-foot-3 or taller, four of whom started. Meantime, Portales has just one. The size differential was a key factor as the Bulldogs captured Friday’s District 4-4A matchup over PHS 67-59 at the Ram Athletic Center. Six-foot-4 junior guard Tucker Smotherman had five of Artesia’s six 3-pointers and finished with 17 points, while 6-6 senior post Cole Kincaid added 15 points and harassed the Rams’ attempts at penetration with several blocked shots. Portale...

Melrose led by double digits for the final 18 minutes and by as much as 34 in the second half of an 80-53 win, giving the family of Buffs coach Kevin Lackey plenty of time to fill his office with 200 balloons to celebrate that many wins over nine seasons with Dora and Melrose. "That just means I've...

  • Hounds fall in frosty home opener

    Peter Stein - Staff writer|Updated Feb 8, 2020

PORTALES - Be it ever so frosty there's no place like home. Eastern New Mexico University's baseball team played its home opener against Texas A&M International on Friday, with remnants of last Tuesday's snowstorm still evident. So baseball it was for the first Friday of February....

PORTALES — Any given year in New Mexico prep football, a team in Class 4A with one of the best five players in the state is a good bet to win a state championship even with an average supporting cast.
