  • ENMU softball splits at St. Mary's

The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 9, 2019

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — The Eastern New Mexico softball team played well enough to win on offense with 16 runs on 21 hits in their two St. Mary’s Classic games on Friday. For the most part, they played well enough to win on defense, but giving up a six-run sixth inning cost them a tournament-opening sweep. Still, Eastern managed a split with an 8-0 win over New Mexico Highlands and a 9-8 setback to Drury. The Greyhounds (3-3) were scheduled to play St. Edward’s Saturday and Regis Sunday, and make their home debut Monday with...

Clovis’ Mason, Wright ink college letters CLOVIS — All season, Clovis seniors Jaylen Mason and Montez Wright found ways to help a young Wildcat team try to compete in Class 6A. They found a little time to help each other along the way too. Their hard work was recognized Friday morning, as a ceremony was held to mark Mason signing on with West Texas A&M and Wright joining Aurora College in Illinois. Clovis coach Cal Fullerton called both the “epitome of a Wildcat” during Friday’s ceremony for how they carried an inexperie...

  • Portales teams drop road games

    Peter Stein, Staff writer|Updated Feb 9, 2019

PORTALES — Both Portales basketball teams were in catch-’em-while-you-can mode Tuesday night. The boys team hadn’t played at all since Jan. 25, the girls since Jan. 29. “It’s been a long time coming,” Portales girls coach Wade Fraze said, “and we were ready to get a game under our belts.” And Tuesday’s return to action against Goddard marked both teams’ last home games until Feb. 19. The Portales fans who did ‘catch ’em’ in their District 4-4A openers Tuesday received mixed results — a dominant performance and 72-43 win f...

  • Clovis boys 3-0 in district

The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 9, 2019

ROSWELL — After a week off, there was no sign of rust for the Clovis boys basketball team. Not even on the road. The Wildcats played their first District 4-5A road game of the season Friday night and landed enough Identified Flying Objects through the hoop to hang on and beat Roswell 62-54. It was Clovis’ first game action since posting one of the biggest program wins in years by edging Hobbs a week earlier at Rock Staubus Gymnasium. Friday there was no letdown after the emotional victory and subsequent week off, as the ’Ca...

  • Lady 'Cats win by 13

    Peter Stein, Staff writer|Updated Feb 9, 2019

CLOVIS - This hasn't been the easiest season for Clovis' young girls basketball team. So when the Lady Wildcats earned their first District 4-5A victory Friday night, it was a big deal. There wasn't a ton of scoring at Rock Staubus Gymnasium, but more by the Lady 'Cats than their opponents from Roswell. That was thanks in part to good Clovis defense and some timely shooting, including a buzzer-beating three from junior guard Aydan Everett at the end of the first quarter. All i...

  • Hounds back at .500

    Kevin Wilson, Editor|Updated Feb 9, 2019

PORTALES - The golden rule is do unto others as you'd have them do unto you. When it comes to basketball, the golden rule of playing .500 ball could be summed up as doing unto others just as much as they've done unto you. The Greyhounds did just that Thursday night, controlling the tempo early before pulling away in the second half for an 83-66 win over Texas Permian Basin - the Hounds' second-straight win to push them back to even on the Lone Star Conference leaderboard. The...

  • Hounds football signs 56

The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 9, 2019

PORTALES — Quality is the goal, but quantity sure increases your chances of hitting it. It will be determined on the turf of Greyhound Stadium if the 2019 signing class was of significant quality. But there’s no denying the Greyhounds gave themselves plenty of bites of the apple with 56 total signees announced Wednesday. Paint Greyhound coach Kelley Lee as the optimist with a class that includes 15 players from New Mexico, four from Lubbock and two from El Paso. “I’m really excited about this class,” Lee said, “(It’s) p...

  • Eastern women get 10th LSC victory

    Peter Stein, Staff writer|Updated Feb 9, 2019

PORTALES - Eastern New Mexico University's women's basketball team is driving toward the season's finish line at a point where there's little room for detours. Thursday at Greyhound Stadium, Eastern cruised to its 10th Lone Star Conference win of the season, accelerating in the second quarter after a sluggish start to leave UT Permian Basin far back in the rear-view mirror - 76-57 by game's end. As of Thursday, there were exactly four weeks before the Greyhounds would be...

  • CCC board hears presentation of audit report

The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 9, 2019

CLOVIS — With one eye on the state Legislature and another on a sound audit, the board of trustees for Clovis Community College made short work of its regular meeting Wednesday morning. A presentation on the audit report for the fiscal year ending June 30 found no material weakness or significant deficiencies, although auditors observed three minor instances of fraud that ultimately resulted in no losses, with corrective measures put in effect. CCC president Becky Rowley spoke to updates on the New Mexico legislative s...

  • In tribute: Community finds celebration in Scotty Watson

    David Grieder|Updated Feb 9, 2019

DORA - You can get a sense of what Scotty Watson meant to the communities he served by the massive crowd Wednesday at his funeral, a group of some 800 filling the Dora High School gymnasium unlike any event there short of some championship games years back. "This was probably one of the largest funerals that I've seen in this area. We've had a few fire chiefs that we buried and we hadn't seen this kind of turnout; it's very impressive," Dora Fire Chief Paul Luscombe told The...

  • Reporter's notebook: Stolen inventory

    Updated Feb 9, 2019

Reuniting a stolen vehicle with its owner is one thing. Stolen tools found inside those recovered vehicles present a different challenge for police. Clovis police recently announced they had “a garage half full of tools” recovered this year from stolen vehicles — tools that did not belong to the vehicles’ owners. “I would say I’ve probably had at least 20 people contact me so far (about the tools); however none of this property has been returned,” Clovis Police Lt. Trevor Thron told The News on Friday. “The stuff we recove...

CLOVIS — A Clovis man convicted in November of his sixth DWI offense was sentenced Thursday to 3 1/2 years in prison, according to a news release from the 9th Judicial District Attorney. A jury found Gerardo Vasquez, 43, guilty of third-degree felony DWI and misdemeanor driving while license revoked following a trial Nov. 15, according to court records. Judge Matt Chandler ordered the sentences run consecutive for the total of more than three years, the “maximum allowed under the law,” said the release. “At the sentenc...
