  • Older neighbor helped with other areas of growing up

Glenda Price Every young girl needs an older lady friend/advisor – specially if she lives way out in the country. A girl’s own mother doesn’t qualify because she’s got too much invested in her offspring’s hoped-for successful life. The girl’s friend/advisor, unlike Mom, doesn’t give advice the usual straightforward way. (“If you don’t leave those pimples alone you’re gonna ruin your face.”) She might just offhandedly observe that the dog’s hurt place didn’t get well very quickly because he didn’t “leave it alone” while...

He stands accused of being an al-Qaida operative. A three-judge panel of 4th Circuit Court of Appeal ruled the Bush administration could not leave him in military prison indefinitely, but the full appeals court sided with the administration. • New Deal didn’t spark economy

    Tibor Machan

If President-elect Barack Obama is serious about admiring President Franklin Delano Roosevelt for how the latter dealt with America’s Great Depression, then America and the world may be in for some very ugly times. By the most reliable historical accounts, FDR did not overcome the economic crisis of his day by his Keynesian political economic policies — government spending and extensive government-funded public works. Instead, it was World War II that brought the economy back in shape. In her book, “The Forgotten Man...

  • Poor cotton harvest doesn't deter couple

Roosevelt County’s cotton scene has nearly disappeared, and this season’s crop fell below usual amounts, according to two farmers. Mary and Houston Lee, who live near Floyd, said their fields yielded about a bale and a half of cotton instead of the normal two or three bales. A bale is normally 485 pounds. The Lees and their son Bruce had about 345 acres of cotton between the two farms this year. They knew of no one else growing cotton in the area. Mary cited the lack of rain and low groundwater as culprits in the smaller har...
