    Roosevelt County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested two Portales men Friday in connection with the theft of scrap metal from a rural Roosevelt County residence, according to a RCSO press release. Sanford Long, 28, and Steven Long, 51, both of Portales were arrested at a scrap metal recycling center in Clovis after a witness provided information about a vehicle that was possibly involved in a theft of scrap metal from a residence on South Roosevelt Road 4.     A professor of political science told the Roosevelt County Democratic Women this week that this year’s presidential election would be historic because it will gauge the country’s ability to deal with gender and race in a political campaign.     The theme for the American Cancer Society’s 2008 Relay for Life in Portales is, “Relay like a Rockstar,” and starting Friday night, area residents will be able to do just that. Portales’ Family, Career and Community Leaders of America is joining with Texico’s FCCLA and Yucca Junior High’s FCCLA in the event.   • Clovis man gets 19 years for baby death

    A Clovis man was sentenced today to 19 years imprisonment for the death of a 9-month old child, according to a press release from District Attorney Matt Chandler. Leroy “Roy” Jaramillo, 44, was convicted Jan. 25 of child abuse resulting in death. The sentence Jaramillo received was the maximum allowed by law, according to the press release. In October 2004 the child, Cristyan Ibarra, was taken to the emergency room at Plains Regional Medical Center. The mother said she left the baby with Jaramillo for about 15 minutes and...

    Glenda Price In the olden days folks who lived in the boonies didn’t have many formal entertainment choices. We could see a movie in town on shopping day, usually Saturday. The local theater kept the same movie a couple of weeks, so except for the Saturday afternoon serials (that always ended with a cliffhanger to get us back next week) we could just see the same movie again. When “The Ten Commandments” came out, it stayed in our local movie house almost a month. It was a good movie, but by the time it left I had Moses...
