  • Library killer: 'I do not have an answer'

    David Grieder|Updated Feb 16, 2019

CLOVIS - Speaking through tears Wednesday morning to dozens of victims who had addressed him Monday in their own impact statements, Nathaniel Jouett apologized and said he wanted to get better. "I'm absolutely horrified by my actions and take full responsibility," he said in his first public address in court since the Aug. 28, 2017, library shooting for which he was convicted last year. Jouett, who turned 18 last month, pleaded guilty to 30 felony counts from that violence, in...

  • Might try being more careful - for Peter's sake

    Carrie Classon|Updated Feb 15, 2019

I sliced my hand open a few days ago. My husband, Peter, says I am accident prone and I tell him this is not true. But a few Thursdays ago, while trying to scrape some particularly stubborn avocado off my favorite sharp knife, I reinforced Peter’s claim and opened up a rather large wound just above my thumb. It’s funny, what happens the moment after an accident. My first response is always denial. “Oh. That didn’t really happen.” Next, I try to minimize it, hoping the damage will be miraculously undone. In this case, I w...

  • Good day to remember the Loves

    David Stevens|Updated Feb 15, 2019

With Valentine’s Day a day away, this seems a good time to tell a Love story. It’s two Love stories, actually. Frank Love met Lillian Nicholson in Vaughn in the early 1920s. He was a railroad man. She was the daughter of a Baptist preacher. Frank Love served four years in the U.S. Navy before joining the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. He worked for the railroad 42 years — mostly in Clovis — and was chief ticket clerk for more than 20 years. Frank Love loved sports. He played baseball, bowled and played golf much of hi...

  • Clovis boys suffer first district loss

    Matthew Asher, Carlsbad Current-Argus|Updated Feb 14, 2019

Clovis’ boys suffered their first district loss of the season three nights earlier, coming out on the business end of a 45-35 score against Carlsbad on the road. The Carlsbad Cavemen ended their district winless streak and handed the Clovis Wildcats their first district loss of the season on Tuesday. The two teams met on Jan. 29 to start out Class 5 District 4 play in Clovis with the Wildcats winning by four. This time the Cavemen returned the favor with a 45-35 victory. “I don’t think we were ready to play tonight,” Isler s...

  • Clovis girls fall to Carlsbad

    Peter Stein, Staff Writer|Updated Feb 12, 2019

CLOVIS – The Carlsbad girls basketball team’s 55-34 road win over Clovis Tuesday night was not exactly breaking news. With the Cavegirls’ record and reputation, a victory over young Clovis was expected; a loss would’ve been one for the breaking news file. So Tuesday’s outcome was more of the same for Carlsbad, who improved to 21-3 overall, 3-1 in District 4-5A. As expected as the victory may have been, it was also welcomed by Cavegirls head coach John Zumbrun. “We’re 21-3. If you told me before the season we’d be 21-3,...

The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 12, 2019

ALBUQUERQUE — Senior Danee Bustos set a new personal record in the 60-meter dash, and helped set a school record in the 4-by-400 relay as Eastern New Mexico concluded its short indoor track and field regular season over the weekend at the Don Kirby Elite Invitational hosted by the University of New Mexico. The Greyhounds head to Lubbock this weekend for the Lone Star Conference Indoor Championships, which will be Saturday and Sunday at Texas Tech’s indoor facility. Bustos finished 16th overall in the 60, crossing the fin...

  • Hounds 6th in poll for third week

The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 12, 2019

COLORADO SPRINGS — The more things change, the more they stay the same for the Eastern New Mexico women’s basketball team. There’s a new face on top of the D2SIDA women’s basketball South Central Region poll in Angelo State, but the Greyhounds found themselves in sixth for the third consecutive week. The Rambelles received four of the six first-place votes of six sports information directors in the South Central, which includes the Lone Star, Heartland and Rocky Mountain Athletic conferences. The Greyhounds won both of thei...

  • Pecos pounds Texico boys

    Peter Stein, Staff writer|Updated Feb 12, 2019

TEXICO — This wasn’t how it was supposed to go, was it? Saturday’s rematch of last year’s state 3A boys basketball championship game between now-2A stalwarts Pecos and Texico seemed to have barn-burner written all over it. But there were no metaphoric barns burnt in Saturday’s game, though Texico head coach Ty Thatcher may have wanted to toss his scorebook into an actual blaze after the Wolverines lost 79-47 at Texico High School. A contest that started reaching out-of-hand status in the second quarter officially arrived ther...
