PORTALES – Two teams were looking to bounce back after getting swept in season-opening Lone Star Conference baseball series. In the end, it was the Greyhounds who were doing the bouncing. Sophomore second baseman Demetrio Archuleta delivered a two-run single and senior center fielder Camden Matthews added a two-run triple, keying a six-run sixth that lifted Eastern New Mexico University to an 8-6 win over Texas A&M International on Sunday at Greyhound Field and a 3-1 series w...

Dave Wagner, The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 14, 2023

PORTALES – Eastern New Mexico University's women nearly pulled off an impressive weekend home sweep over two of the Lone Star Conference's better teams. They weren't quite able to do it, following up Thursday's 68-62 win over West Texas A&M with a narrow 66-61 setback against Lubbock Christian on Saturday at Greyhound Arena. Still, the Greyhounds (12-11, 9-9 LSC) hold down the No. 7 spot in the upcoming LSC tournament, and if they can take care of business over the final t...

Dave Wagner, The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 14, 2023

PORTALES – Things didn't look good toward the end of Saturday's Lone Star Conference men's matchup between Eastern New Mexico University and Lubbock Christian at Greyhound Arena. The last couple of minutes seemed like an eternity as the Greyhounds, who saw a 12-point lead early in the second half dissipate, tried to scramble back. Then suddenly, Blazej Czerniewicz had the game in his hands. Trailing by two points, junior forward Jahcoree Ealy went hard to the basket and was f...

  • Shorthanded Cavemen get past Cats 53-49

Dave Wagner, The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 14, 2023

CLOVIS – Even without their full roster, Carlsbad’s boys were able to stay on track Monday night in their bid for a District 4-5A regular-season title. They have 6-foot-7 senior post Tylen Gonzales to thank for that, as much as anybody. Missing eight players from their roster, including four of their top six, the Cavemen were able to eke out a 53-49 victory over Clovis High and set up a showdown at Hobbs on Friday night for the top spot. If Carlsbad (18-7, 5-0 district) wins, the Cavemen have the top seed in next wee...

  • Faith: Heavenly father cheers you on in far more important game

    Curtis Shelburne, Religion columnist|Updated Feb 14, 2023

I was sick and missed school for a day or two in second grade when the teacher taught about Roman numerals. I’ve done my makeup work since then, but I’m still a bit weak on the subject, which means that I am sometimes a bit slow in finding the right chapter in excellent old Bible commentaries and in Super Bowls. Super Bowl LVII (that would be 57) was played Sunday, but I mistakenly called it Super Bowl 52 (that would be LII) a couple of times before the game started. By the...

  • New word brings new meaning to chirping of birds

    Betty Williamson, Local columnist|Updated Feb 14, 2023

My friend Janet, who knows I love both words and birds, texted me an interesting “word of the day” last week: “seatherny.” Pronounced “seth-er-nee,” it is purportedly “the serenity one feels when listening to the chirping of birds.” Whether or not this is a real word (it appears in plenty of online memes, but I’ve failed to find it in a more legitimate source like, say, a dictionary), there is no question that one does feel serene when listening to birds. Or at least I do. Th...

  • Portales Fire Department short on personnel

Landry Sena, The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 14, 2023

Since 2020, the Portales Fire Department has lost 34 personnel to turnover, according to Fire and EMS Chief T.J. Cathey. He said he believes employees leave because of pay and burnout. “We’ve had a hard time getting applicants for a long time now,” Cathey said. But, he said, it isn’t just their department. The entire city is having a hard time getting applicants to fill positions. “I think it also had something to do with the pandemic,” he said. Of course, during the pandemic when everyone was encouraged to stay home, Cathe...

  • Area legislator cosponsors organized retail crime bill

the Staff of The News|Updated Feb 14, 2023

A number of Clovis and Portales businesspeople don’t believe the area has the organized shoplifting problem Albuquerque and Santa Fe have. “It’s not really on my radar,” Karl Terry, Executive Director of the Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce said. “But I’ve heard this organized shoplifting is getting to be bigger business than the illegal drug trade,” Terry said. “It’s alarming.” District 64 Representative Andrea Reeb is a cosponsor of the Organized Retail Crime Bill (House Bill 55). She joins Representatives Bill Rehm, Jo...

  • Opinion: Transgender policies hurt women

    Michael Reagan, Syndicated content|Updated Feb 14, 2023

The problem with young people today is no one teaches them history. If they knew what the East German government did to their Olympic women athletes in the 1970s and 1980s, for instance, they might understand why it’s not fair for transgender men to compete against women in sports like swimming, tennis and surfing. It’s ancient news now, but before the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, East Germany was arguably the most evil communist country in Western Europe. It wasn’t just the l...

  • Opinion: State must begin transition now

    Walter Rubel, Syndicated content|Updated Feb 14, 2023

Term limits can be incredibly liberating, as former Republican Gov. Gary Johnson demonstrated when he professed his love for marijuana shortly after winning reelection in 1998. Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has the twin advantages of not having to run again, and going into her second term with financial resources that are beyond the wildest dreams of her predecessors. The state exceeded revenue estimates by $3.6 billion during the last fiscal year. The proposed $9.44 billion budget now under consideration is up by $4 billion...

the Staff of The News|Updated Feb 14, 2023

What appeared to be an unfinished, abandoned house sustained damage in a suspicious fire on Sunrise Boulevard in south Clovis Monday morning. “It was a home that looked like a barn,” Clovis Fire Department Chief Mike Nolen said. “It was two stories. The upper floor and roof were completely damaged.” Nolen described the blaze as suspicious in origin. He said the Clovis Fire Department is investigating the fire because no one was living there. Nolen said three of the city’s fire stations sent personnel and equipment to the bl...

  • Opinion: Challenging big government has its consequences

David Stevens, The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 14, 2023

A petition some hoped would overturn Clovis’ anti-abortion ordinance has likely failed. Organizers fell 31 signatures short of the required number to force an election, city officials announced last week. While those who oppose the ordinance were frustrated, many were also surprised to learn their names and addresses will soon be made public. Prior to the City Commission passing the ordinance, this space warned of big government run amok. Not only will the controversial decision cost taxpayers untold amounts of money to d...

  • WMC patients, staff spread across area

Landry Sena, The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 14, 2023

It will be one year this April since the Women's Medical Center (WMC) in Clovis announced its permanent closing. The announcement came after clinic administrators reported they tried every effort to recruit OB/Gyn physicians, but ultimately failed. They officially closed their doors last June. WMC served the area for 35 years, treating patients in Curry, Roosevelt, DeBaca and Quay counties. Almost one year later, how are women in eastern New Mexico receiving the care they...

Grant McGee, The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 14, 2023

Clovis City commissioners on Feb. 2 voted to approve a plan for the city’s Parks and Recreation Department that will charge annual membership fees -- $50 per person. This has not set well with some area residents, according to Parks and Recreation Director Russell Hooper. “I’ve received several emails, several phone calls,” Hooper said. “I’ve seen the social media postings.” Hooper said many of those who have called him are saying the city is targeting people and groups. “People are calling, arguing for their group, their le...

  • U.S. shoots down fourth object

    Bloomberg News, Syndicated content|Updated Feb 14, 2023

The U.S. military had never shot down an object in American airspace before taking out a Chinese balloon off South Carolina earlier this month. Now it’s becoming a near-daily occurrence. The sudden spate of U.S. jets blasting unidentified objects of mysterious origin from the skies has provoked so much befuddlement — not to mention panic — that Pentagon officials were forced to field questions about the issue Sunday night, just as Americans were tuning into the second quarter of the Super Bowl. One reporter even asked if it w...
