Ultimately, Friday’s games were canceled, as the area experienced its first heavy rain in months, while temperatures sat around 40 degrees and under throughout the daytime. The...

  • Not all homework academic

    Audra Brown|Updated Feb 16, 2018

Homework, of the kind that we’re all familiar, with numbers and letters and grades that range from A to F, was rarely, if ever, done on a desk. Flat surfaces include the floorboard of most tractors, the tailgate of a pickup, the nearest side of a piece of box-tubing that’s either in a pile of steel or part of an implement toolbar. You can note, however, that a horse isn’t easy to write on, but some saddle-horns are the right size and shape to get a little spot that is more...

  • Ten reasons I thank God for winter

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated Feb 16, 2018

Ah, winter. How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. Reason No. 1: Christmas usually comes during winter, thus Reason No. 1 by itself would more than tip the scales. Reason No. 2: Christmas singing (where “yours truly” gets to croon Christmas tunes) comes, yes, indeed, during Christmas which ... well, refer to Reason No. 1. Reason No. 3: My favorite days tend to be days during which I get to spend at least a little time reading, drinking coffee or tea, and/or just bre...

  • We don't have to be ideal

    Judy Brandon|Updated Feb 16, 2018

Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a German pastor, theologian and anti-Nazi dissident was imprisoned for his faith and later hanged in the Flossenbürg concentration camp in Germany. But while in prison, he prolifically wrote about God’s love. Bonhoeffer’s statement about who God loves is one of my favorites. He wrote: “God does not love some ideal person, but rather human beings just as we are, not some ideal world, but rather the real world.” I contend Bonhoeffer’s most definitive...

The Staff of the News|Updated Feb 15, 2018
