  • Accepting Christ life-changing experience

    Judy Brandon

It was in the early 1950s, and my parents were in seminary in Kansas City. Our family had the opportunity to live at the seminary with other couples and families. All were full time students at the seminary just like my parents were. We lived on the seminary grounds in apartment buildings that were three stories high. So we had seminary families all around us, below us and above us. All the parents who attended seminary had the same purpose for being there. That made for a...

  • Laws also deserve to be scrutinized

Just about everyone wants justice. One of the most powerful tools you and I have available to keep government honest is the jury. Unfortunately, you can’t count on the government informing you of your power; you must usually hear of this from a libertarian activist instead. I believe that when you are serving on a jury, it is your duty to not only judge the facts of the case (in other words, to decide if the accused person actually did what they are accused of), but also whether the law the person is accused of violating i... Full story

  • Free exchange of ideas remains vital

Freedom New Mexico Freedom of speech and academic freedom prevailed last week when a deeply religious man — some call him a zealot — delivered a speech at the U.S. Air Force Academy after an intensive campaign to censor him by government force. Retired Marine Lt. Clebe McClary spoke at an Air Force Academy prayer luncheon Thursday, a day after U.S. district Judge Christine Arguello dismissed a lawsuit that asked the government to intervene and stop the talk. The Military Religious Freedom Foundation filed the suit...

  • Balance freedom with responsibility

My mother was a homemaker. She made every old ranch house we lived in a comfortable home, which usually was not easy. She also was a neatness freak. Dishes were washed immediately after each meal — no waiting till later allowed. This was before automatic dishwashers, understand. Also, all beds were made first thing after rising, and sheets, etc., were washed each week. I chafed under those rules, and looked forward to the day I lived elsewhere and wasn’t held to them. In due time my wish came true. I went to college, a...

  • Their view: Laws also deserve to be under scrutiny

Kent McManigal writes for Freedom New Mexico. He shares his thoughts on a juror’s duties: Just about everyone wants justice. • There's always joy to be found

To be happy we must keep our joy. Whatever happens in this life, we can still find something good. We have more blessings than problems, and we can be thankful for that. The book of James begins with a strong encouragement for Christians everywhere: “Dear brothers, is your life full of difficulties and temptations? Then be happy, for where the way is rough, your patience has a chance to grow. So let it grow, and don’t try to squirm out of your problems. For when your patience is finally in full bloom, then you will be rea...

  • Water utility officials hoping for leftover federal money

    Argen Duncan

The Eastern New Mexico Water Utility Authority representatives hope to get federal money left over from other projects at the end of the year since the Ute pipeline project wasn’t included in the president’s proposed budget. The utility authority met Thursday morning at Clovis City Hall. Regarding federal money, pipeline project manager Scott Verhines said the Bureau of Reclamation had high monetary obligations to existing facilities and most of the little money left for rural water programs went to American Indian pro... Full story

  • My turn: Performance brings on tears

Last weekend, I attended Eastern New Mexico University’s production of “Rabbit Hole,” a story about a young couple struggling to regain purpose in their lives after their 4-year-old son dies. Talk about a tear-inspiring story. There was humor splashed in throughout, so that the audience spent the two hours of the play switching back and forth between laughing, sniffling and stunned silence. I give congratulations to the ENMU theater department for once again putting on a delightful performance. This weekend, there’s a lot o...

  • Local dairymen waiting for ruling on environmental regulations

    Argen Duncan

The fate of new state dairy environmental regulations remains to be seen as involved parties wait for decisions from the Court of Appeals and the Water Quality Control Commission. At the end of December, the commission issued regulations, which contained points of contention over linings for dairy wastewater lagoons and the use of monitoring wells to see if the lagoons leaked. Soon after, the Dairy Industry Group for a Clean Environment filed an appeal of the rules with the Court of Appeals and a motion to stay the...
