STAFF WRITER [email protected] It took Tarleton State just 19 seconds to take the lead Wednesday night at Greyhound Arena, and the Texans did more than enough in the first half to make sure they’d never give it up. E.J. Reed scored 16 to lead four Texans in double figures, as Tarleton jumped out to an 11-0 lead to open the game and a 46-17 advantage at the half en route to an 83-53 rout of Eastern New Mexico. SPORTS WRITER [email protected] Clovis High swimming coach Vincent de Maio doesn’t think his teams are quite ready to compete for state team championships, at least not yet. He does think both squads have enough to challenge for high team finishes in this weekend’s state meet, hosted by Albuquerque Academy. “We’re always looking for top-five finishes,” said de Maio, who has coached the girls contingent since its third season in 2004-05 and started the boys program t...

A U.S. magistrate has ordered Apple Corp. to assist the FBI in gaining access to information in the employer provided iPhone of San Bernardino shooter Syed Farook. Rube Render The FBI is seeking any information that can help in its investigation into the December shootings in which 14 people died. Apple is reluctant to provide the assistance based on...
The past couple of years have seen various protests against out-of-control government employees and agencies. Earlier it was the “Black lives matter” protests of deadly police encounters; more recently, ranchers protesting abuse by the Bureau of Land Management. These protests miss the mark — sometimes tragically. Rule number one: When you protest, make sure you target the enemy, not bystanders. Kent McManigal While I agree “Black lives matter,” I couldn’t support the protest...
State Rep. Jim Dines, R-Albuquerque, long a champion of transparency in government, did the unusual but ethical thing Tuesday — he pulled his ethics commission joint resolution from consideration in the Senate Rules Committee because protectors of the status quo gutted the transparency elements it contained. Pulling it took courage and common sense. Because why have an ethics resolution that — thanks to a substitute measure suggested by Sen. Daniel Ivey-Soto, D-Albuquerque, and other committee members — would no longe...

There are a lot of hats for people to wear. In the country there are fewer heads to fill those hats. Some hats are harder to find and that just makes the few and far between who wear them all the more notable. One of those rare hats is hard to describe; party-planner, host/hostess are both accurate but incomplete. In a futile attempt to describe the essence of the position, I’d call it the one-who-arranges-get-togethers. The term get-together is more accurate and meaningful t...

When Susie and I were in our early teens, our mother and daddy volunteered our family to work during Daddy’s scheduled vacation time in a church camp in Saskatchewan, Canada. Daddy was the camp pastor, Mother took on kitchen duty and Susie and I were just ordinary campers. We had a chance to meet girls from all over Canada and, for several reasons, that camp experience was a milestone in my growing up years. One person that we met there is someone Susie and I still talk about....
