the Staff of The News|Updated Feb 24, 2022

PORTALES - A list of snack foods and drinks that help finance scholarships at Eastern New Mexico University continues to grow. To coffee, wine and salsa, ENMU has added pistachios, flavored popcorn, and cookies to its list of treats that will carry the ENMU brand and contribute to scholarship funds, but the nuts, popcorn and cookies lack names. The coffee is called Greyhound Grind, the wine is called Eastern Sunrise, and the salsa is branded Silver Dawg salsa, but names for...

A $20 million capital outlay was granted to the Eastern New Mexico Water Utility Authority by the New Mexico Legislature in its 2022 30-day session that ended Thursday. The outlay was the largest among the capital outlay allocations the Legislature approved for Curry or Roosevelt Counties in its 2022 session. Steve Hansen, Staff writer|Updated Feb 20, 2022

New Mexico State Rep. Randal Crowder, R-Clovis, is calling it quits. He won't be seeking re-election when his current two-year term in the New Mexico House of Representatives ends in December, he said, but he will remain on duty to finish the term. "They say when it's time, you'll know it," said Crowder, who has been part of Clovis' public life for nearly two decades. "Well, it's time." He said he wants to get back to a quiet life, "and doing things with my hands" again. He...

  • My hope and prayer that pandemic in rear view mirror now

    Karl Terry, Local columnist|Updated Feb 19, 2022

Just like that, we’re mask-free. Being an election year I was pretty sure the end was near. I just didn’t know our governor sought one last moment in the spotlight of a pandemic. But after seeing the way a good part of our ordeal played out in front of cameras and on Facebook Live the timing makes sense. While the cameras are trained on you at the end of the legislative session, make a little hay. After two years of masking up indoors we were all more than ready to burn our...

  • Lady Rams lock up district crown

the Staff of The News|Updated Feb 19, 2022

ARTESIA — Any doubt — and there was very little, really — that the Portales High girls would capture another District 4-4A championship was put to rest on Tuesday night. Although the Lady Rams struggled a bit to finish off Artesia, they were never really in trouble and pulled away late to complete a 64-45 victory and clinch their seventh district title in the last eight years. Portales (18-5, 5-0 district), which was ranked fourth in Class 4A this week by MaxPreps and wrapped up its regular campaign on Friday at last-...

  • Two-time champs suffocate ENMU 66-43

    Dave Wagner, Staff writer|Updated Feb 19, 2022

PORTALES - With the last two NCAA Division II titles (2019, 2021) in their hip pocket, the immediate concern for the Lubbock Christian women's basketball team is trying to move up in the Lone Star Conference standings. The Lady Chaps (22-5), currently ranked 19th in D-II, continued to win on Thursday, using five first-quarter 3-pointers and the league's stingiest defense to turn back Eastern New Mexico University 66-43 in a non-league game at Greyhound Arena. Despite a 10-4...

  • Tigers outlast Dora in 2 OTs, clinch 4-1A title

the Staff of The News|Updated Feb 19, 2022

ELIDA — Elida’s version of a “Big 3” combined for 75 points on Thursday night, and the Tigers needed almost all of them to get past Dora 91-84 in double overtime, clinching the District 4-1A regular-season title. Juniors Jose Jimenez and Aiden Yates netted 32 and 25 points, respectively, while senior Rylan Creighton added 18. The teams have a good chance of playing again this week in the finals of the district tournament. The game seesawed most of the night. It was tied 68-68 at the end of regulation and 81-81 after the first...

ALBUQUERQUE — If nothing else, Clovis High’s boys made a big jump in scoring from last spring’s COVID-delayed state swim meet to this year’s event. On Thursday at Albuquerque Academy, the Wildcats more than doubled their team tally from last spring, finishing ninth in team standings with 99 points. Clovis scored in seven events, highlighted by a 3-5 finish from junior Thomas Palla (4 minutes, 59.43 seconds) and sophomore Porter Kidd (5:00.53) in the 500 freestyle. “It was huge that we got individual medals for two swimmers...

  • Lawmakers approve 14% increase in budget

The Santa Fe New Mexican, Syndicated content|Updated Feb 19, 2022

Here’s what happened with notable legislation during the 30-day session that ended Thursday. Budget: Lawmakers got the job done with about a day to spare. They approved a nearly $8.5 billion spending plan for fiscal year 2023 — a 14 percent increase over the current fiscal year, with raises for all state workers, including teachers, state police officers and judges. The budget also includes funding to increase the minimum wage for state workers to $15 an hour. Tax cuts: House Bill 163 made a late dash across the finish line....

  • Opinion: Wealthy space tourists don't need our charity

    Walter Rubel, Syndicated content|Updated Feb 19, 2022

From the day in 2005 when the agreement between Bill Richardson and Richard Branson for what would later become Spaceport America was first announced, the business model for southern New Mexico has always been to separate wealthy tourists from their not-so-hard-earned vacation money. “... First flights of a suborbital spaceliner [are] now planned in late 2008, early 2009,” Virgin Galactic announced in a 2005 press release, the first of what would be many overly optimistic projections. As the opinion page editor for the Las...

  • Opinion: Trial vital to confronting American racism

    Leonard Pitts, Syndicated content|Updated Feb 19, 2022

Is America a racist country? As some of you will recall, Sen. Tim Scott answered that question in a speech last year with an emphatic no. He was promptly echoed by Vice President Kamala Harris. Neither explained their reasoning, but one assumes it was based, at least in part, on the fact that the country has no laws explicitly requiring racial mistreatment. Fair enough. America hasn’t had such laws for a whole 50 years, give or take. But that line of argument asks that we acce...

  • Opinion: Legislation will help build up state's infrastructure

    Martin Heinrich, Guest columnist|Updated Feb 19, 2022

After two challenging years, the economy is growing faster than it has since 1984. The American Rescue Plan and the landmark Infrastructure Law that I helped pass last year are creating the foundation for an incredibly robust economic recovery. As your senator, I have done everything in my power to steer resources to our state so we can come back from the challenges of the last two years stronger than ever before. The American Rescue Plan that we passed in March delivered over $1 billion to reopen New Mexico’s schools for i...

  • Opinion: 'Russiagate' came to absolutely nothing

    Rich Lowry, Syndicated content|Updated Feb 19, 2022

From the perspective of several years ago, it’s the stuff of an implausible political thriller or a conspiratorial YouTube account. One presidential campaign spies on another as part of a broad effort to get government agencies to pick up the baton and launch a high-stakes investigation of the new president that hampers his first years in office and consumes massive public attention. Where could such a thing happen? Maybe Brazil or Equatorial Guinea? Well, we now know it happe...

  • Opinion: Russia should show more regard for health of athletes

Dallas Morning News, Syndicated content|Updated Feb 19, 2022

USA track star Sha’Carri Richardson, is speaking an important truth loudly, and we don’t blame her. After Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva was allowed to compete in the Olympics despite a positive test for an illegal substance, Richardson, who was blocked from running in Tokyo in 2021 because she tested positive for THC, took to Twitter to point out the double standard. “The only difference I see is I’m a black young lady,” Richardson posted on Monday. Well, that, and Valieva is on the Russian figure skating team, a g...

  • Opinion: Justice search should cast wider net

    Rube Render, Local columnist|Updated Feb 19, 2022

About 14% percent of the U.S. population is Black. Professional sports leagues are made up of the best players and coaches that management can find. The most accurate data I can find shows that in 2020 the National Basketball Association was made up of 74.2% Black players, 16.9% white players, 2.2% Latino players and o.4% Asian players. The other 6.3% were classified as “other.” The National Football League has around 57.5% Black, 24.9% white and 17.6% other. There are no fem...

the Staff of The News|Updated Feb 19, 2022

The device, called a precision approach path indicator, will be purchased from Bixby Electric for $290,040.69. Bixby submitted the lower of two bids for the device. James Harris, director of the Clovis Regional Airport, said the device helps pilots find the best path for landing in limited visibility conditions. The device will be purchased through a grant from the New Me...

  • Pages past, Feb. 20: Room to grow in university arena

    David Stevens, Publisher|Updated Feb 19, 2022

On this date ... 1967: Eastern New Mexico University had opened its new Greyhound basketball arena. Now the community was busy “figuring what sort of events can be staged in this facility,” according to the Portales News-Tribune. “The lighting and acoustical properties of the building were impressive, and the setting would be ideal for a symphony, or almost any sort of spectacular requiring a lot of floor space and ample seats for the audience,” newspaper Editor Gordon Greaves wrote in his front-page column. “The big quest...

  • Clovis teacher earns presidential award

    Steve Hansen, Staff writer|Updated Feb 19, 2022

It was in the early days of hybrid learning due to COVID-19 in 2021 that Silvia Miranda's fourth graders at Clovis' Mesa Elementary School learned that not only would they be alternating classroom and remote learning days, they would not be able to use the playground. Miranda decided to channel the children's frustration into a math lesson. Yes, a math lesson Miranda directed the kids to find a solution to their playground predicament, and set her charges to work planning a pl...

  • Governor lifts NM mask mandate

The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 19, 2022

Staff and wire reports Many New Mexicans are rejoicing in the ability to breathe free again. Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham on Thursday lifted the indoor mask mandate. The state had been one of only two still under an indoor mask mandate. The other was Hawaii. The governor had been under increasing pressure to drop the mandate in recent weeks. On Thursday, the final day of the legislative session, she insisted politics did not play a role in the decision. She said she “won’t waver” on the effectiveness of those masks and said... Full story
