STAFF REPORT More than an estimated 18,000 acres burned southeast of Causey over the course of Wednesday, according to Portales Emergency Management Coordinator Keith Wattenbarger. Wattenbarger said the fire ignited around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the area of Roosevelt Road E and 32 and “burned pretty hot,” heading about three to four miles into Texas. “The firefighters did an amazing job containing it,” said Wattenbarger, adding that the fire could have easily been much worse with how quickly it moved.
