  • See you again soon

    Dave Wagner - Staff Writer|Updated Feb 22, 2020

CLOVIS — Will the real Clovis High girls basketball team please stand up? Is it the one which shot 2-for-26 from the field in the first half of Friday’s District 4-5A matchup against Roswell High at Rock Staubus Gym? Or is it the one which hit its first five shots, including four 3-pointers, when play resumed in the third quarter. Down 15-14 at the break, the Lady Wildcats put together a 41-point second half and turned back the Lady Coyotes 55-48 behind a personal-best 22 poi...

The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 22, 2020

Daniel Aranda, 53, and Tamara Aranda, 58, are wanted on charges of non-residential burglary, conspiracy to commit non-residential burglary, larceny and tampering with evidence. Although court documents state investigators suspect the two started the fire just next to their residence to cover up their thefts, they currently face no charges in connection with the blaze. Clovis fire crews too...

  • Clovis boys finish as second seed

    Peter Stein - Staff Writer|Updated Feb 22, 2020

CLOVIS — It was going to be a game after all. When the Clovis boys basketball team kept a double-digit lead over Carlsbad for much of Tuesday night’s contest at Clovis High’s Rock Staubus Gymnasium, it seemed the Wildcats would maintain an arm’s-length advantage the rest of the way. But Carlsbad had other ideas and stormed back to make it a two-point game in the fourth quarter. That seemed to ignite the ’Cats again and they went on a run, enabling them to pull away for a 58-...

  • Texico girls avenge defeat

    Peter Stein - Staff Writer|Updated Feb 22, 2020

TEXICO — Tough, opportunistic defense + fast-break baskets + overall scrappy play = District 7-2A regular-season champions. That was the equation for Texico’s girls basketball team this past Friday night when hosting Pecos at the Texico Sports Arena. Employing all of the above, the Lady Wolverines took command early, held a double-digit lead for most of the game, and won 45-27 to capture the district’s regular-season title and the postseason district tournament’s No. 1 seed....

  • Wildcat baseball eyes big rebound in 2020

The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 22, 2020

CLOVIS — Thursday at Bell Park, the Clovis baseball team was looking forward to spring. Partly because Thursday was a gray day with temperatures topping out at about 35 degrees. Mostly because spring is the season offering a chance to show how much the Wildcats have grown. After the 2018 team that tied a school record with 23 wins graduated 12 seniors, last year’s squad was left with almost no varsity experience. The 2019 Wildcats consisted of one senior, a few juniors and mostly sophomores who, while eager, had not yet learn...

  • Late rally not enough to save Rams

The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 22, 2020

LOVINGTON — Portales High’s boys ran into a buzzsaw early on Friday night. Facing a Lovington squad which is better than its winless District 4-4A record would indicate, the Rams found themselves down by 27 points in the third quarter before mounting a huge comeback. In the end, it was just too much to overcome as the Wildcats held on for a 76-72 victory. Junior guard Cobe Sandoval had five 3-pointers and 25 points for Lovington (13-12, 1-5 district), which faces PHS (10-16, 2-4) again at 6 p.m. on Tuesday in the opening gam...
