The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 21, 2017

CLOVIS — Clovis High baseball coach Richard Cruce wasn't feeling too good after the first game of Thursday's season-opening doubleheader against Hobbs at Bell Park. Suffice it to say, his mood improved after the nightcap. Junior Sebastian Nunez tossed a complete-game, five-hitter and the Wildcats bounced back after being run-ruled in the opener for a 4-1 win and a split against their former district rival. Hobbs won the opener 12-2. "The first game, I lost a few hairs," C... Full story

  • Even deadliest problems have correct answer

    Audra Brown|Updated Feb 24, 2017

Problems to solve are common in an agricultural operation. Many require only mental effort to figure out and plan; the carrying out is only any afterthought once decided. But the greatest problems are the ones that you don’t see coming and that will probably kill you if you don’t come up with the correct answer in a short amount of time. When the mad-eyed cow decided to flip your motorcycle over, the correct answer was, in fact, a solid turning kick to her face. When the cal...

  • Thank God for the beauty of all seasons

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated Feb 24, 2017

Well, rats. My fire is out. I just looked up across the room and, no flame in the fireplace. A sad sight. I confess, I laid the fire, lit the match, and quit paying attention. Instead of staring at the hearth, I was staring at a blank computer screen and wishing words would start appearing. Moments later, it seems, my fledgling fire fizzled. A good fire in the fireplace is one of my favorite things. I like living in a place where we have real seasons, where fireplaces are not...

  • Our ways are not always God's ways

    Judy Brandon|Updated Feb 24, 2017

Have you ever had a paradigm shift in your thinking? A paradigm shift happens when a person changes his or her mind or way of thinking about something. A new way of thinking then replaces the old way. Here is an example: Not long after Charlie and I married, we went looking for a car. Charlie grew up thinking that Fords were the only cars to buy. His dad had always bought Fords and his grandfather had always bought Fords. But I grew up thinking, from my Daddy, that you...

    Dave Wagner|Updated Feb 24, 2017

CLOVIS — After not getting anybody into Class 6A state competition last spring, Clovis High tennis coach Brenna Silveira has what appears to be modest goals for the coming year. That still includes getting to state. But Silveira, in her third season, knows it'll be a tough task with a new district that includes Eldorado and La Cueva. "It'd be nice if we could finish third," she said of the new District 2-6A. "If we can get higher than third, that's great." Clovis teams open th...
