  • Bridge talk ongoing at state line

Landry Sena, The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 27, 2024

Department of Transportation officials in Texas and New Mexico have heard from area residents regarding a bridge over the railroad splitting Texico from Farwell. Next on the agenda: an environmental study that likely won't be completed until sometime next year. Meetings in Texico and Farwell the past two weeks have helped DOT officials understand community concerns, they said. Now they review and wait. "As the project progresses, and as the environmental documentation is...

The Santa Fe New Mexican, Syndicated content|Updated Feb 24, 2024

SANTA FE -- Attorneys outlined vastly different scenarios for a jury in their opening statements in Hannah Gutierrez-Reed's involuntary manslaughter case Thursday. Prosecutors alleged the young film armorer introduced live rounds on the set of the movie Rust, while a defense attorney contended his client is being made a scapegoat by producers who forced her into a chaotic work environment in order to cut costs and maximize profits. Special prosecutor Jason Lewis told jurors...

  • Ask the News - Feb. 25

the Staff of The News|Updated Feb 24, 2024

Isn’t it a violation of Clovis city code for an elected official to endorse, campaign, etc. for someone in a political race in town? If so, what is the penalty? Any Clovis City Code that references what certain people may or may not do in elections deals with city employees, not elected officials according to City Attorney Jared Morris. The specific ordinance that deals with city employees and elections is City ordinance 2.64.100 that does not apply to elected officials, just “employees” as defined in 2.64.070, accor...

The session was conducted by Jackie Fishman of Consensus Planning, an Albuquerque planning and architecture firm. Fishman outlined the New Mexico Affordable Housing Act. Points she noted included: • When it comes to housing, "cost burdened" households were described as those s...

  • We only really feared three things in the dark of night

    Karl Terry, Local columnist|Updated Feb 24, 2024

Growing up in the country around here we really only feared three things when it turned dark. None of those things was the boogey man and none of them involved hunting snipe — we were almost fearless. You sometimes knew where any of those three things were located, depending on whose house you were playing at and how kind they were to visiting playmates. Sometimes even when you knew where these things were, it didn’t matter when a good game of tag, kick-the-can, football or ba...

  • Lovington pulls away from Rams

the Staff of The News|Updated Feb 24, 2024

Meantime, the Rams all but stopped scoring. The Wildcats turned a one-point lead at the intermission into a runaway, outscoring PHS 22-8 in the third quarter en route to a 77-54 victory. Lovington (16-10, 4-2 district) earned the No. 2 seed in this week's 4-4A tournament. On Thursday night, the Wildcats host...

  • Hounds set season scoring high in rout

Dave Wagner, The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 24, 2024

It took Eastern New Mexico University's men a while to get going Thursday night. You'd never know it by the final result. Playing again without the services of senior guard/forward and Lone Star Conference scoring leader Jahcoree Ealy, the Greyhounds went crazy after scoring only four points in the first seven minutes on 1-of-13 shooting, including 0-of-7 from 3-point range. Down 19-6 nine minutes in, ENMU tallied an astonishing 84 points in 23 minutes to turn a 10-point...

  • Opinion: Europeans need to 'cowboy up'

    Rube Render, Local columnist|Updated Feb 24, 2024

When the Persian king Cyrus the Great established his empire, he divided his holdings into territories or provinces called satrapies. A satrapy was ruled by a satrap who served as a viceroy to the king, but had significant powers of his own. In medieval Europe, satrapies eventually became referred to as vassal states. A vassal state had a mutual obligation to a superior state or empire. Vassal states are generally called client states today. If King Cyrus returned to the...

  • Opinion: US has its own political prisoners

    Kent McManigal, Local columnist|Updated Feb 24, 2024

Much of the American public is understandably stirred up over the suspicious prison death of Putin’s critic, Alexei Navalny. Yet America’s anti-American prison industry is also filled with political prisoners. More than anywhere else in the world, by a wide margin. Including political prisoners like Ross Ulbricht. This doesn’t even count heroes like Julian Assange, held by other governments to appease the U.S. government. Or those heroes living under asylum in other count...

  • Opinion: Governor should veto pension hike

The Santa Fe New Mexican, Syndicated content|Updated Feb 24, 2024

Two news stories last week proved New Mexico has a working class and a ruling class. One was about Santa Fe’s minimum wage, which will increase to $14.60 an hour March 1. That’s a bump of 57 cents an hour. The second story mentioned New Mexico lawmakers approving a bill titled “Legislative Retirement Changes.” A more accurate heading would be: “50% pension increase for sitting legislators.” Our citizen legislators do not receive a salary, so you might wonder how they qualify for pensions. They make the laws, and they have c...

  • Lots of reasons to want to live near a university coming up this weekend

    Betty Williamson, Local columnist|Updated Feb 24, 2024

I’ve always said I would never want to live in a community without a college or a university. The coming weekend provides several reasons why, with a “triple play” of fine arts offerings at Eastern New Mexico University: a heartwarming play, a beloved musical, and an afternoon symphony complete with a visiting conductor. First the play. The ENMU Theatre kicks things off Thursday evening with a one-act show called “Native Gardens.” Written by Karen Zacarías and directed b...

  • Candidates field new questions at forum

Madison Willis, The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 24, 2024

Twelve of the 13 candidates attended, each fielding five questions with just one minute to speak.
