SANTA FE -- A bill updating New Mexico’s high school graduation requirements for the first time in over 15 years has made its way halfway through the legislative marathon. The state House of Representatives on Wednesday voted 64-3 to approve House Bill 126. The bill’s sponsor, Rep. Andrés Romero, D-Albuquerque, told members of the House it is designed to keep students invested in high school and give them more options for classes that may speak to their post-school career needs. “We need to reengage,” said Romero, an Albuq...
PORTALES – After a disappointing loss in the second game of a doubleheader the day before, Eastern New Mexico University’s softball team made short work of Western New Mexico on Wednesday at Greyhound Softball Field. Short, that is, as in five innings short. Freshman Ashley Nickerson walloped a three-run homer in the bottom of the first and the Greyhounds went on to rout the Mustangs 15-2 In Lone Star Conference action on Wednesday. ENMU (12-6, 4-2 LSC) outscored the Mustangs 30-10 in the series, but let one slip away in an 8...
SANTA FE -- After faltering last year amid pushback from district attorneys, a revised bill that would end life without parole as a sentencing option for juvenile offenders passed the Senate with bipartisan support Wednesday. “When children cause harm in our community, yes, we must hold them accountable. But we must hold them accountable in ways that leaves room for their potential to experience transformation, positive transformation,” said Sen. Antoinette Sedillo Lopez, D-Albuquerque, the lead sponsor of Senate Bill 64....
PORTALES – Sophomore right-hander Noah De La Riva pitched 6 1/3 solid innings and everyone in Eastern New Mexico University’s lineup hit safety on Friday in the Greyhounds’ Lone Star Conference series-opening 8-4 victory over 15th-ranked St. Edward’s at Greyhound Field. ENMU (5-8, 5-8 LSC) opened an 8-0 lead in the fourth inning and cruised to the win. De La Riva (1-2) allowed seven hits and two runs, walked none and struck out nine before sophomore right-hander Julian Lopez worked the final 2 2/3 innings in relief. It was on...
MELROSE – It took Melrose a while to get going, but in the end the Buffaloes had too much for Logan in a District 6-1A boys tournament semifinal on Thursday. Sophomore Cy Draper led three Buffs in double figures with 16 points, and Melrose (21-5) advanced to Saturday’s championship game at top-seeded Fort Sumner with a 66-51 victory over the Longhorns. Melrose trailed 12-11 at the quarter and led by just three points at halftime, but the Buffs outscored Logan 40-28 over the final two stanzas to win going away. Junior Michael...
AMARILLO – One down, possibly six to go for Farwell's boys. The Steers made short work of Hale Center in their Class 2A bi-district round tilt at West Plains H.S., posting a 70-38 victory over the Owls. Farwell (26-4) led 35-11 at halftime and was never threatened in extending its winning streak to 19 games. Junior Corey Stancell led three Steers in double figures with 16 points, while sophomore Ryder McElroy had 13 and freshman Braddock Foster 11. For Hale Center (13-15), sop...
HOBBS – Clovis High’s boys did a much better job on Hobbs senior forward Michael Mackey this time, but it still wasn’t enough to keep their season going. Mackey, who tallied a school-record 51 points in an 88-68 Hobbs victory over Clovis on Feb. 10, was limited to 16 points this time, including just four field goals. Still, the Eagles had plenty enough to defeat the Wildcats 61-51 in Thursday’s District 4-5A boys tournament semifinal. Hobbs (15-12) was to play at top-seeded Carlsbad in Saturday’s title tilt. The Eagles limite...
SILVER CITY – It was another disappointing night against their in-state rival for Eastern New Mexico University’s basketball teams. For the second time in four days, the Mustangs swept the Greyhounds. But despite their 80-75 loss, ENMU’s men were still able to lock down the No. 7 seed in this week’s LSC tournament at Comerica Center in Frisco, Texas. Meantime, the women suffered their fifth loss in a row to finish one game out of qualifying for the LSC get-together. The Hounds (17-11, 12-10 LSC) will face the East Divisio...
CARLSBAD – Clovis High's girls didn't exactly light it up Thursday night. Then again, they didn't have to. The Lady Wildcats turned the tables on second-seeded Carlsbad, blanking the Cavegirls 9-0 in the final quarter to post a 25-19 win in the District 4-5A tournament semifinals. The Lady Cats (20-7), who have posted their most wins since going 27-3 in 2014-15, were shut out in a quarter in both contests against Carlsbad during regular-season district play, both losses. "...
TEXICO – Texico's girls have come a long way since mid-January, when they were saddled with a 6-12 record. Since then, the Lady Wolverines have won seven of eight, capturing the District 6-2A regular-season title and adding the district tournament crown to that on Friday night with a 36-26 win over Clayton. Now, they'll wait and see where they land in the 16-team Class 2A state tournament pairings, which will be released today by the New Mexico Activities Association. After go...
ARTESIA – Portales High’s girls made a strong comeback in Friday’s District 4-4A tournament championship game. In the end, it wasn’t quite enough, though, as top-seeded Artesia notched a 41-37 victory over the Lady Rams. “It was back and forth,” PHS girls coach Wade Fraze said. “I’m proud of the kids. We just didn’t do quite enough to win it.” Senior guard Koda Beltran scored 11 points while senior guard Audrey Velo and sophomore post Hattie Harrison added 10 each for the Lady Bulldogs (18-8), who are ranked fifth in Cla...
ARTESIA – A slow start did in Portales High’s boys on Friday night. The Rams managed only 16 first-half points and went down in a 60-55 loss to Artesia in the championship game of the District 4-4A tournament. Senior guard Nick Sanchez scored 16 points and junior guard Diego Wesson added 10 as the Bulldogs (18-9), ranked fifth in Class 4A, held on for their eighth consecutive win and a sweep of the district regular-season and tourney championships. “We didn’t play a great first half,” Rams coach Randy McBroom said. “The seco...
