  • Fencing, go-carts damaged in fire at St. Bernard Farms

Madison Willis, The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 1, 2024

Plans for a new go-kart attraction at the recreational business St. Bernard Farms went up in smoke Monday. A wind-driven grass fire burned an estimated 15 to 20 acres, destroying cedar fencing, lighting, signage and the go-carts. Owner Rocky Bernard said the farm sustained about $50,000 in damages. Good news, he said, was the flames never reached the farm fields, so they will be able to provide corn mazes and pumpkin patches this fall as usual. However, he said Monday’s f...

Landry Sena, The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 29, 2024

Editor’s note: This is one in a continuing series of state-of-the-entity interviews with local officials. Sarah Austin is the city manager for Portales. Q: What has been the recent discussion on the water situation? A: We’ve discussed how to increase our water supply, how to drill more wells, and how much funding is needed. We created the water drought plan, which is now the water efficiency plan. We are in the process of installing flow meters at our tanks, we are working on ordinances, rate increases, and incentives. Q: How...

  • Faith: A little humility is a big step toward wisdom

    Curtis Shelburne, Religion columnist|Updated Feb 27, 2024

Months ago, I jotted down a few words about, well, fools. It was probably a foolish thing to do, likely motivated by my foolishly reading too much news. But here’s what I wrote. “We all at times play the fool. “Only a fool will install each of the bars of his own soul-cell by flaunting freedom for license, trading love for lust, parodying self-less patriotism with mindless populism, mocking virtue’s civility with soul-rot’s untamed tongue, confusing strong opinion with eternal...

  • Cats capture district with tiebreaker win

the Staff of The News|Updated Feb 27, 2024

HOBBS – For the third time this month, Roswell High gave Clovis High all it wanted on Monday night. The Wildcats, though, pulled away down the stretch to take a 55-44 win over the Coyotes at Hobbs’ Ralph Tasker Arena in the tiebreaker game for the District 4-5A regular-season championship. As a result, the Cats (19-8) will host Saturday’s 6 p.m. tourney title matchup at The Rock. Brothers Jayden and Marvin Cox combined for 41 points and came up with some clutch plays late to help the Cats pull away from a two-point lead...

  • ENMU misses chance for series win

the Staff of The News|Updated Feb 27, 2024

AUSTIN, Texas – Eastern New Mexico University’s baseball team is still looking for its first series win. On Sunday, the Greyhounds had a great chance to do just that, but they couldn’t hang on to an 8-0 lead and St. Edward’s rallied late for a 9-8 victory and a series split. Trailing 8-0, the Hilltoppers (6-8, 6-6 LSC) scored seven times in the bottom of the sixth, capped by a three-run homer from junior designated hitter Dillon Flores, then got a bases-loaded, two-run single with two out in the eighth from senior right f...

  • ENMU women top Fort Smith on late basket

Dave Wagner, The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 27, 2024

It's been a season of "what ifs" for the Eastern New Mexico University women's basketball team. Fully half of the Greyhounds' 26 games have been decided by six points or less (6-7), and they've had their share of disappointments. On Saturday, though, they got one to bounce their way as junior forward Ishuana Hunter found senior guard/forward Deja Adrian for a back-door layup with 3.6 seconds left for a 56-54 Lone Star Conference win over Arkansas-Fort Smith at Greyhound...

ENMU, playing its first home games, came into the weekend just 4-18 all-time against the Hilltoppers, but now sport a 4-2 record against them in their own park after their first sweep of St. Ed's. ENMU (13-4, 6-3 LSC) pounded out 12 hits in Sunday's...

  • Hounds turn back stubborn Fort Smith

Dave Wagner, The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 27, 2024

Arkansas-Fort Smith may rank near the bottom of the Lone Star Conference men's basketball standings, but the Lions certainly didn't play like it on Saturday. Coming off a 109-106 loss on Thursday at Western New Mexico in triple overtime, UAFS stayed in contention for almost the entire game before Eastern New Mexico University finally nailed down a 92-85 victory at Greyhound Arena to clinch a berth in next week's LSC tournament at Frisco, Texas. Senior guard Greg Johnson...

LEVELLAND, Texas – The bad news is the Farwell girls' dream of a trip to the Class 2A state semifinals at the Alamodome in San Antonio came to an end on Saturday. • Opinion: 2024's major candidates both criminals

    Michael Reagan, Syndicated content|Updated Feb 27, 2024

The Democrats are trying to put Donald Trump in jail. The Republicans are trying to put Joe Biden in jail – along with the rest of his extended political crime family. Both sides think the only way they can win is by putting their opponent in jail. Is this what our beat up republic has to look forward to as we head for the election in November? The country is not just going to hell in a handbasket, it’s already there. I’m watching an invasion of illegal immigrants parad...

  • Opinion: Haley nomination would lower the political temperature

    Tom McDonald, Syndicated content|Updated Feb 27, 2024

For years, I’ve been calling Donald Trump a snake-oil salesman, but that’s such an antiquated term. Then I heard about the line of shoes and cologne he’s now promoting, and now I’m thinking he’s a telemarketer. And, I must say, he’s good at it. I heard on NPR that his red, white, blue and gold sneakers are selling out. Like the Trump brand itself, they’re getting terrible reviews, but he manages to sell them to his salivating suckers anyway. Trump may be bringing down our democracy, but hey, he’s one of the best pitchmen o...

  • Opinion: Future of current gen women positive

    Elwood Watson, Syndicated content|Updated Feb 27, 2024

It should probably come as little surprise that a majority of American millennial and Generation Z women identify as liberal. A Gallup Poll released earlier this month indicated the ideological gap between men and women across various generations has increased over the past few years, and that young women today are much more liberal than young men. Some of their findings: • Women aged 18 to 29 are now 15 percentage points more likely to identify as liberal than men of the s...

The license allows the Sawmill Brewing Co., a brewing station of Red Door Brewing in Clovis, to make, distribute and sell beer at the location on Fifth St. in Melrose. According to council member Ronald Moore, there were about 90% of those in attendance who were in favor of the idea, and only a couple of people who spoke against it. Those who were against the idea, according to Moore, thought this action would...

  • Radio wedding for Big Deal and Barbie

Grant McGee, The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 27, 2024

I was mindlessly surfing the Internet the other day, looking up this and that, this person, that person and I wondered about Bobby “Big Deal” Thompson, a fellow I knew long ago and far away. Well, he’s dead, he died a few years ago. He was 74. I mostly remember Big Deal for his wedding on the radio. It was back in a little town tucked back in the hills and hollows of Appalachia’s coal country. Bobby was what some might call a “character.” He was loud, he was boisterous, he was funny. Bobby made money in the mobile home...

  • Funding could be lifeline for rural hospitals

The Santa Fe New Mexican, Syndicated content|Updated Feb 27, 2024

The old chapel that houses Sierra Vista Hospital’s rehabilitation center is quaint, with light streaming through stained glass windows dating back to the Truth or Consequences facility’s parochial roots. Less charming are the mini split air conditioning units that line the walls of the room, and the window units that cool the emergency medical services department in an old convent — both evidence the HVAC system in the building is shot, along with much of its other infrastructure. “I’m basically one sewer line break awa...
