Rocky Banda, 37, of Amarillo, represented himself in a jury trial that started Monday morning and concluded Wednesday afternoon following about four hours of deliberations. CLOVIS — Clovis High's girls basketball team will be rested, educated and prepared when it takes the Las Cruces High School floor for Friday night's 6 p.m. Class 6A first-round state playoff game. Now all the Lady Wildcats have to do is win it. That won't be easy for 12th-seeded Clovis against fifth-seeded Las Cruces, an experienced team looking to make one last championship run with its current core, nearly all of whom will graduate in May. The Lady 'Cats, though, had t... Full story

  • Portales keeping focus as top seed

    Peter Stein|Updated Mar 1, 2018

PORTALES — Look only at the record and you'll see a No. 16 seed. Bosque High's girls basketball team is 14-14 overall, went 6-4 in its regular-season district play. Seems like a 16th seed in a tough 4A class, right? Look closer, though, and you might see a trap door for any opponent that takes such a team for granted. Seedings just determine where teams play in the first round. Not looking closer and instead looking ahead can be dangerous for any team, even No. 1 seed Portales... Full story

  • ENMU offers smorgasbord of entertainment

    Betty Williamson|Updated Mar 1, 2018

Eastern New Mexico University is setting out a fine arts feast this weekend, starting with a jazz appetizer tonight, followed by main courses of opera and Greek drama, and finishing with a wind symphony dessert on Sunday. I’m hesitant to use the phrase “something for everyone,” but this is an especially good weekend to sample the familiar or explore something new. The Swanee Singers (under the direction of guest Conductor Ken Miller) and Rich Schwartz’ Jazz Ensemble combine...

  • ENMU women hope third time no different

    Eric Murray|Updated Mar 1, 2018

PORTALES — A year ago, Eastern New Mexico University won 20 games and a share of the Lone Star Conference's regular season title. This year, things haven't quite gone as well as some had had hoped, coming into the season, as a slow start to the 2017-18 campaign made it difficult for ENMU to repeat last season's success. However, the Hounds have only gotten better as the season has worn on, winning 13 of their last 19 ballgames, following a rough 3-5 start. Eastern (16-11, 1...

On this date ... 1963: A headline in the Clovis News-Journal about the previous night's City Commission meeting read, "Water Woes Predicted; Shortage Plans Started." "We all may not be around to see it," Mayor Ted Waldhauser told the commissioners, "but sometime in the future, Clovis will need additional water supplies." One plan Waldhauser foresaw was piping water 70 miles over land from the Canadian River. "One thing is certain," Waldhauser warned. "Sometime in the future...

She said CMS sends out a reminder news release periodically and was prompted to do so again this week because a company had been contacting local businesses and requesting donations on behalf of CMS. Curtis said that while the district does f...

  • How to deal with wind: Think blink

    Eamon Scarbrough|Updated Feb 28, 2018

Wind: It's good for turbines, bad for your eyes, and somewhere in between for farmers. And whatever your opinion of the wind, there's no debating it's blowing and a-going out there as we approach spring. National Weather Service Meteorologist Daniel Porter said the region's strongest winds each year occur in March and April - an average of 12.5 mph. Porter said that based on data compiled from 1985 to 2005 in Tucumcari, the closest area with existing wind speed data. While...
