  • Milk Lover's Ball resounding success

The second annual Milk Lover’s Ball hosted by the United Dairy Women (UDW) on Feb. 17 was a huge success! More than 400 people attended and raised more than $10,000 to help assure the residents of three area children’s homes receive the recommended three servings of dairy products a day for the next year. The UDW goal is to see that the childhood routine of consuming three servings of milk, cheese or yogurt each day carries over to healthy lives as adults. UDW members promote agriculture and the agricultural industry, as it r... Full story

  • Government need not intervene after Dow crash

    Freedom Newspapers

Well, Tuesday was certainly a dramatic day on the stock market, wasn’t it? When the Dow industrials fall 416 points in a single day — even though 3.3 percent is not all that precipitous a decline — people tend to notice and ask questions. Does it signal the end of the Bush tax-cut boom? Does it mean the U.S. market has become the tail wagged by the Chinese dog? Did Alan Greenspan start it by uttering the dreaded R-word at a speaking engagement in Asia? Is a recession in the offing? The fact that the Dow closed only 52.39... Full story

  • Robertson rams Portales

    PNT Staff

In a gym that has seen some fantastic finishes this season, there was no miracle ending for the Portales Rams Saturday night. The Las Vegas Robertson Cardinals shocked a packed Portales High School gymnasium with a 36-33 upset of the Rams in the first round of the Class 3A state tournament, ending the Rams season. “We just couldn’t get a shot to fall,” Portales head coach Mark Gallegos said. “I knew coming in they were going to pack it in against us, I just thought all the easy looks on the inside that we got, I thought... Full story

  • Lady Tigers advance

    PNT Staff Report

ALBUQUERQUE — The toughest part of the Elida Lady Tigers (22-4) first-round match in the 1A state basketball tournament was apparently the bus ride back without a heater. The District 2 champion Tohajilee Lady Warriors (16-4) found themselves outmatched by District 4 runnerup Elida Friday in Albuquerque. Elida rode a 25-5 scoring advantage in the third quarter to a 75-49 victory to advance to the state semifinal next week in Albuquerque. Elida coach Dan Howard said having his whole team come out aggressive from the start m...

    Freedom Newspapers

SAN ANGELO, Texas — Things started out pretty well for Eastern New Mexico University on Saturday, but they went downhill pretty quickly. The Zias scored three times in the top of the first in the opener of a Lone Star Conference South Division softball doubleheader with Angelo State, but the Rambelles took control two big innings later in the game and went on to 10-3 and 9-2 wins to complete a four-game series sweep. Pitcher Kari Galm capped a four-run fourth with a three-run homer off freshman Kristen Cruickshank (2-6), g...

  • Bulldogs sweep Greyhound baseball

    Freedom Newspapers

Eastern New Mexico University’s baseball team is probably glad to see Southwestern Oklahoma leave town. The Bulldogs (4-9) came to Portales winless, but left with a stunning four-game Lone Star Conference crossover sweep of the Greyhounds after taking 7-2 and 8-6 verdicts on Saturday at Greyhound Field. Southwestern’s Gabe Winn (1-1) pitched a complete-game eight-hitter in the opener and blanked the Hounds (10-10) until the sixth. In the meantime, the Bulldogs opened a 5-0 lead by the third inning against Evan Courteau (3-... Full story

  • Coyotes moving on to state

    PNT Staff Report

ALBUQUERQUE — The Dora Coyote defense successfully contained the second-leading scorer in the state Saturday as they snared a 63-44 win over Temple Baptist Academy in the first round of the 1A state basketball tournament. Temple senior forward Mike Russo, who is used to running roughshod over opposing defenses, found himself with just four points at halftime as Dora (21-6) posted a 15-2 first quarter score before going up 32-16 at the half. “We did a good job on defense in the first quarter,” Dora coach Ty Thatcher said.... Full story

  • Elida Tigers roll to state

    PNT Staff

Elida boys basketball coach Darrell Chenault says his kids began Saturday’s game nervous. After taking a fast 25-1 lead midway through the first period, the Tigers may be well advised to pack their nerves as they travel to the state tournament quarterfinals for the first time in more than 20 years. The Elida boys ran Desert Academy out of town 72-29 Saturday afternoon at Elida High School in the 1A boys state tournament first round. “The biggest thing we have to straighten up is our nerves,” Chenault said. “Our boys haven’t... Full story

  • Cats cruise past Palo Duro

Clovis High’s Jordan Jacobs is tagged out by Amarillo Palo Duro third baseman Heath Weatherbee as he tries to stretch a double into a triple during the first game of Saturday’s baseball doubleheader at Bell Park. (CNJ staff photo: Andy DeLisle) As far as the struggling Amarillo Palo Duro baseball team was concerned, Clovis High picked a bad time to play two solid games. The Wildcats scored in every inning of both games and smacked the winless Dons 11-1 and 19-2 on Saturday at Bell Park, with both ending in the fifth inn... Full story

  • Portales heading to quarters

    PNT Staff

The Portales Lady Rams used long-range shooting and stifling defense to punch their ticket to a 25th consecutive Class 3A state quarterfinals appearance. Senior shooting guard Briana Hernandez poured in 23 points, including six 3-pointers, as the defending state champions overwhelmed Cobre 74-31 in a first-round game of the state tournament Friday night at Portales High School. “It’s real satisfying (to play well in my last game at home),” Hernandez said. “I’m just sad that it has to come to an end. It all just played it... Full story
