  • New 'Kid' movie released - but only for a few days

    Adrian Gomez, Albuquerque Journal|Updated Mar 8, 2019

New Mexico has plenty of history — especially its place in the Wild West. The area was home to Billy the Kid and his famous shoot outs, mainly one with Sheriff Pat Garrett. A new story hits Albuquerque and Santa Fe theaters — albeit briefly — this weekend, and it was filmed in New Mexico. Vincent D’Onofrio’s feature film directorial debut “The Kid” has a limited run through Wednesday. “The distributor did not select any of our theatres to play it,” an Allen Theatres spokesperson wrote in an email. “We were hoping because...

The U.S. Navy Concert Band performs for free Saturday night in Clovis’ Marshall Auditorium. It’s part of its 10-state, 25-city tour for 2019. Considered one of the service’s “signature outreach programs,” the Navy Band is based in Washington, D.C., and its wind-ensemble concert band has for over 90 years toured annually “to reach out to audiences in areas of the country that do not have opportunities to see the Navy’s premier musical ensembles on a regular basis,” according to promoters. The tour started Feb. 20 in Virginia...

  • Bill expanding background checks sails through House

    Albuquerque Journal|Updated Mar 5, 2019

SANTA FE — A proposal to expand New Mexico’s background check requirement for gun sales is almost on its way to Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham — an enthusiastic supporter of the bill. The proposal, Senate Bill 8, won approval 42-27 in the House late Monday, the last major step needed to send it to Lujan Grisham, a Democrat who took office at the beginning of the year. The bill has just one more procedural step before going to the governor — the Senate must concur with a minor, one-word change made to the bill in a House committ...

  • Senate blocks proposal to take money from permanent fund

    Albuquerque Journal|Updated Mar 5, 2019

SANTA FE — A proposal to take more money from New Mexico’s largest permanent fund for early childhood programs hit a brick wall again in the Roundhouse on Monday, when three Senate Democrats joined with Republicans to block it from moving forward. But Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said later in the day that she’s not giving up the fight and threw her support behind a scaled-back measure. The first-term Democratic governor acknowledged she had no commitments from Senate leaders that the new proposal would pass before lawmakers w...

  • Roosevelt officials approve support of joint resolution

The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 5, 2019

PORTALES — Roosevelt County commissioners on Tuesday narrowly approved supporting a joint resolution in the New Mexico Legislature that could give counties the option to transfer their probate court jurisdiction to magistrate or district courts. “Your vote today is nothing more than giving the Legislature direction to support this or not support it,” said Commissioner Dennis Lopez, noting the proposal would still require approval by the state’s supreme court and voters. Commissioners voted 3-1 to approve the resolut...
