  • Senator to lead push to make Puerto Rico a state

    Ryan Boetel, Syndicated content|Updated Mar 6, 2021

New Mexico’s quest for statehood was slowed for years, in part, because of concerns about different languages and cultures here. Sen. Martin Heinrich, D-N.M., said he knows about his state’s history, and it’s one of the reasons he’ll be leading the push to make Puerto Rico the country’s 51st state. “One of the things that shocked me was how similar the struggle really is, that the arguments haven’t really changed,” Heinrich said at a news conference in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday. Heinrich said he would introduce a bil...

    Albuquerque Journal, Syndicated content|Updated Mar 6, 2021

SANTA FE — Legislation that would waive renewal fees for liquor licenses over the next year won approval without opposition in the House on Thursday, putting the bill on the brink of final passage. The proposal, Senate Bill 2, already made it through the Senate, but a House committee revised the proposal, so it will have to go back to the Senate for approval of the House amendment. Nonetheless, the bill quickly passed the House on a 64-0 vote Wednesday with no debate. The waiver of fees would apply to all liquor license h...

SANTA FE — Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed into law Wednesday two new stimulus measures, authorizing a fresh round of financial relief for New Mexico low-income workers, restaurants and small businesses. Backers say the two signed bills, which took effect immediately upon being signed, could help thousands of New Mexicans navigate the final throes of the COVID-19 pandemic. “This pandemic has been devastating for everyone, but the pain has been spread unequally,” Lujan Grisham said Wednesday. “My hope is these economi...

  • Opinion: Abbot sets example by opening Texas

    Updated Mar 6, 2021

He wasn’t the first governor in the country to lift the mask mandate for his state. North Dakota, Montana and Iowa have ended state-wide mask orders in recent weeks and progressive states like Florida and South Dakota never issued them in the first place. But Gov. Greg Abbott did the country a huge favor last week when he announced that Texas was allowing all businesses in the state to reopen at full capacity on Wednesday. It was a loud and bold signal to the whole country that it’s time to climb out of our basements, regain...

    Alisa Boswell-Gore, Correspondent|Updated Mar 6, 2021

A February press release from AccuWeather focused on meteorologists predicting a slow start to the storm and tornado season -- which could lead to more severe weather conditions later this spring. With El Nino weather conditions, the past few years have seen an early start to severe weather conditions; storms tend to begin in January. But with weather conditions now following a La Nina pattern, tornado season is expected to be delayed until April or May. This delay could cause a more “active” weather season with a higher rat...

  • Trust fund for pets could give you peace of mind

    Danny Tyree, Syndicated content|Updated Mar 6, 2021

But such gestures aren’t as eccentric as you might think. Many estate plan experts now include pet planning as part of the comprehensive services they offer. Really, you’re just dog-whistling past the graveyard and kicking the Alpo can down the road if you haven’t contemplated your own mortality and the fate that could befall your pets once you’re gone. Will they be res...
