  • Reading to children enchanting experience

    Cindy Kleyn-Kennedy|Updated Mar 8, 2018

Recently, there was a great deal of reading taking place throughout the district. Doesn’t that always happen, one might ask. Of course. However, the recent increase was due to “Read Across America.” Back in the late 1990s, the NEA (National Education Association) wanted to come up with a special day to specifically celebrate reading, so “Read Across America” was born. Technically held on the Dr. Seuss’s birthday (March 2), the event has grown and expanded to weeks and even lo...

  • Memories forever: Sharon King, StoryCorps

    Betty Williamson|Updated Mar 8, 2018

When you lose someone you love, as many of us did last week with the passing of our friend Sharon King, it’s hard not to think of the African adage: “When an old man dies, a library burns to the ground.” Now, Sharon would smack me upside the head for suggesting she was an old man, and I’m not. Replace “old man” with “a beloved friend,” “a small-town mayor,” “a favorite aunt” — whatever description fits best — and the adage still rings true. It’s the loss of the wealth of inf...

  • Maxwell ousts Floyd boys in 1A quarterfinals

The Staff of the News|Updated Mar 7, 2018

BERNALILLO — Floyd coach Steve Foust said the other day that the key to his Broncos having a chance to beat No. 2 Maxwell in the 1A boys quarterfinal would be playing good defense. On Wednesday, Foust’s club played pretty solid defense, but the problem was the Floyd offense in a 61-47 loss at Bernalillo High School. “We relied too much on the 3,” Foust explained. “We couldn’t get anything going, getting to the basket, and I think their length really bothered us.” Kolten Riggs scored 29 for Maxwell (26-1), which will bring an...
