  • Grady buries cold-shooting Cowgirls

    Eric Butler

ALBUQUERQUE — A fairly easy victory with the next day to practice and shop. It’s not usually that good at the state basketball tournament, but the beginning of the Class 1A girls tourney for the Grady Lady Bronchos on Tuesday was everything the doctor ordered for a nice, stress-free visit. And the Cliff Cowgirls, Grady’s opposition in a quarterfinal game at Valley High, helped fill out the prescription. Solid all-around play from several Lady Bronchos, particularly sophomore Stephanie Bailey, helped propel Grady (25-5) into t...

James Adams, Temple’s 12th-year coach, doesn’t mind the tag of tournament favorite. “Anything can happen, but if we come out and play our game we’re going to be tough to beat,...

  • Lawmakers seek special session

David Arkin Republican lawmakers are pushing for a special legislative session. They want to discuss a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriages. But area legislators are doubtful the session is going to happen. And the area’s lone Democratic lawmaker, Rep. Jose Campos of Santa Rosa, called the plan “ridiculous.” Gov. Bill Richardson has said he does not support a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. The governor is against same-sex marriages though. Last month in Sandoval County, the county clerk there...

PORTALES — The only office Portales Mayor Orlando Ortega plans to hold in the next two years will be in his hometown. The Democrat recently said he was considering a run at the New Mexico House seat in District 66. But on Tuesday, Ortega announced he would not seek that position until his term as mayor is up in 2006. “After much thought and discussion with citizens of Portales, I see clearly that my role and responsibility right now and for the next two years is to be mayor of Portales and to help move our community for...

  • Underacheivers a result of poor teaching

Walter Williams What passes for educational enlightenment these days boggles the mind. Matt Gouras, of The Associated Press, writing in the Jan. 5 Seattle Times, tells a story about Tennessee schools. The success of some students has made other students feel badly about themselves. What’re the schools’ responses? Public schools in Nashville have stopped posting honor rolls. Some are considering a ban on posting exemplary schoolwork on bulletin boards. Others have canceled academic pep rallies, while others might eli...

  • New Mexico a state of unique Americans

Ned Cantwell Go up to your ordinary guy on the street in say, Hobbs, and tell him he looks like a space cadet, he’s liable to deck you. Try the same thing in Clovis, but first make sure the rifle is still hanging on the rack inside the pickup. Say it in Santa Fe and there’s a good chance you might be right. There was a story recently that surprised just about everyone in the country except New Mexicans. The Albuquerque Journal’s Wren Propp wrote a piece about a film maker who traveled to the Santa Fe Film Festival to show her...

  • Iraq's interim constitution first step of many

    Freedom Newspapers

It took a while, and the delay has been a profound embarrassment to the United States and the Iraqi Governing Council. But Iraq now has an interim constitution, signed by all 25 members of the council. It’s a start, but only a start, on a road whose destination few would be foolish enough to predict. On paper, this is an impressive document, vesting control of the military in civilian hands, setting up a federalist structure and guaranteeing freedom of religion, freedom of thought and expression, peaceable assemblies, fair t...

  • Planning and Zoning Commission makes 'worthwhile changes'

    Jack King

The Planning and Zoning Commission on Wednesday approved four changes to the city’s zoning regulations that had been requested by builders and developers. Director of Building Safety Pete Wilt called them “worthwhile changes” that are “not anything drastic.” But Planning and Zoning Commissioner Bill Bollinger questioned the practice of having staff meet with Realtors, builders and developers to iron out the changes before they came to the commission and said the commission was making zoning changes in the wrong way. “Zon...

  • Clovis sings song of victory

ALBUQUERQUE — As Gallup reached the bottom of the ramp leading to the floor at the The Pit for pregame warmups, Gallup players started singing: “Na, na, na, na, hey, hey, hey, goodbye.” Typically an end-of-the-game crowd sendoff to the losing team, the barb was directed at the Clovis Lady Wildcats, who collectively stood 50 feet away at the top of the ramp waiting for their entrance. Instead of waging in a war of words, the Lady Wildcats silenced the Bengals with a rock solid effort led by sophomore Aimee Hilburn and, as ESPN...
