  • Huge win in softball

The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 15, 2019

MULESHOE — The Clovis softball team may be on to something. Tuesday night, the Lady Wildcats started their 2019 season with a crackle, routing Muleshoe on the road 10-2 with steadily improving hitting and the lights-out pitching of eighth-grader Kohana Pousson. There were some sparkling defensive plays made behind Pousson, especially by junior second baseman Yasmine Larrea. But the young pitcher did a lot of it from the mound, striking out 10 and walking none. Pousson tossed 6 2/3 innings in relief, coming on to face a o...

  • Softball win streak ends

The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 9, 2019

COMMERCE, Texas — The Eastern New Mexico softball team was on a hot streak entering Friday’s doubleheader at Texas A&M-Commerce. Following the game, not so much. Playing the 18th-ranked Division II team in the country has a way of cooling teams off. The Greyhounds’ win streak was snapped at six after they dropped both contests Friday, losing 10-1 and 7-0. The Greyounds recorded just five hits on the day and struggled to slow down a Texas A&M-Commerce offense that was consistent all day on its home field. The Hounds’ lone ru...

  • Long day for ENMU baseball

The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 9, 2019

STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Eastern New Mexico’s baseball team finally tasted the long ball Friday. But in the long run, ENMU tasted defeat. Though junior right fielder Joseph Zubia hit Eastern’s first home run of the season, the Greyhounds could not slow down Tarleton State’s red-hot bats in a 14-4 loss at Dickson Stadium. It was a tough start to a four-game non-conference series against the Texans, as Eastern kept the game close until Tarleton State’s bats came alive. The Texans jumped on the Hounds out of the gate, mashing a thr...

    Updated Mar 9, 2019

BY THE STAFF OF THE NEWS TEXICO — To use a baseball way to describe a basketball scenario, Texico’s girls basketball team has a runner on first base. The state tournament is, after all, like a baseball diamond — you’ve got to touch four bases to get home. And with Friday’s 57-30 rout of 16th-seeded Loving at Texico Sports Arena, the top-seeded Lady Wolverines laced a metaphoric single, getting them one-quarter of the way to winning a second consecutive state championship. Texico improved to 23-3 and earned a 2A quarterfi...

  • Lady Rams rally

    Kevin Wilson, Editor|Updated Mar 9, 2019

PORTALES - As Codi Flores went to the line with 59.7 seconds left and Portales' state tournament life in her hands, everything reset back to what she'd learned to do about a dozen years ago. Five dribbles. Deep breath. Relax. Four times in the final minute, Flores had that chance. Four times she connected, hitting four free throws as part of a game-ending 16-0 run that gave the Rams a 42-36 Class 4A first-round victory over Artesia Friday night at the Ram Athletic Center. The...

Nick Eatman, Lone Star Conference|Updated Mar 9, 2019

The matchup between the No. 4 and No. 5 seeds was the fourth quarterfinal game of the day at Comerica Center, and saw a wild ending that included a game-tying 3-pointer by ENMU’s Zach Parker with just 10 seconds to play in ov...

Michelle Lujan Grisham has signed into law a high-profile bill that will add New Mexico to the list of roughly 20 states that require universal background checks for gun purchases. The governor, who pushed for gun control measures on the campaign trail last year, said the measure could lead to a decrease in gun violence, specifically citing a study that fewer law enforcement officers are shot and killed in the line of duty in states with such laws. “We all have a constitutional right to be safe in our hom...

    Albuquerque Journal|Updated Mar 9, 2019

SANTA FE — The Senate voted late Friday to approve a plan to gradually increase New Mexico’s minimum wage to $11 per hour by 2022, despite concerns about its impact on small business in rural parts of the state. The final 27-15 vote came after the bill’s sponsor, Sen. Clemente Sanchez, D-Grants, fended off proposed amendments from both flanks — Republicans trying to delay or shrink the proposed wage hike and several Democrats trying to boost it for tipped workers and high-schoolers. “I think this is reasonable,” Sanchez sai...
