A proposed overhaul of New Mexico’s public education system — eliminating the Cabinet secretary position and reestablishing a statewide board of education — is headed to its last stop, the House floor. The House Education Committee voted 9-2 Wednesday to support Senate Joint Resolution 1, which calls for a November 2024 general election ballot question asking New Mexico voters to decide on a constitutional amendment making the change. SANTA FE — In 1912, Doña Dolores “Lola” Chávez de Armijo, state librarian of New Mexico, filed a lawsuit when Gov. William C. McDonald tried to remove her from office. McDonald claimed that women were unqualified to hold office according to the Constitution and laws of New Mexico. Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham trumpeted Armijo’s courage and resolve during a presentation Wednesday marking International Women’s Day, and celebrating New Mexico’s Historic Women Marker Program. Armijo won her lawsuit, which allowed her to keep h...
How did “Rams” come to be the mascot for Portales High School? There is some evidence the nickname for Portales’ school sports teams was the “Yams” in the 1920s. PHS Principal Art Ontiveros said that’s probably because Portales was known for having high-yielding sweet potato crops. The flag of The Portales Valley News in 1926 referenced Portales as “The Sweet Potato Town, U.S.A.” The school’s 1926 yearbook was titled “The Yam,” and has a picture of a large sweet potato on the front cover. But the Yams were mostly out and t...

Daylight saving time for 2023 officially began this morning at 2 a.m. with clocks moving ahead one hour. According to a news release from New Mexico State University (NMSU), the time change “is a perfect way to remember to change the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.” Clovis Fire Chief Mike Nolen agrees. “First I want to remember the time change, it sure would look bad if the fire chief showed up late,” Nolen said. “But absolutely, test your smoke detector and your batteries of the device wi...
Today’s Daylight Saving Time system — spring-to-fall DST followed by winter Standard Time — is an excellent compromise, providing DST’s many advantages the majority of the year and yet avoiding winter Standard Time’s difficulties during the dark, cold months. One proposed alternative is year-round Standard Time. This would cut short 240 beautiful spring, summer and autumn evenings and eliminate eight months of Daylight Time’s benefits. Numerous studies show that spring-to-fall DST increases public health and the quality of...
Almost everyone hates springing forward and falling back every year. Moving clocks ahead one hour in March only to return them to their previous settings in November wastes time — literally. No adjustments to clocks change the length of the day, which is determined by latitude (distance from the equator) and season of the year. Daylight Saving Time, which kicked in this year at 2 a.m. today, simply shifts an hour of sunshine from the beginning of the day to its end. “Saving” an hour of sunlight requires losing an hour of sl...

It may seem odd to seek peace by moving to a war-torn African country, but for medical missionary Dr. Cynthia Myers, it provided a way to escape a shallow life of unearned wealth, a philandering fiancé, and a fathe...
When I was growing up, my Granddad Ruby laid across the bed every afternoon and took a nap. It didn’t make sense to me back then, but it does now. Several years ago, I got my sleep apnea under control with a CPAP machine and that kept me from dozing at my desk. But as I’ve aged, I still love a nap in my chair. Give me 20 minutes at lunch and I finish the day refreshed. Of course I’ve found, even with the CPAP, I don’t sleep very long at night as an old fart. But with the CPAP...
