  • New home for cold Wally

Grant McGee, The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 14, 2022

CLOVIS - Wally, the Hillcrest Park Zoo's American alligator, was moved into a temporary home Wednesday with the help of a few Clovis firefighters. "The readings were off for his recirculation heater for his pond," Assistant Zoo Director Lisa Fox said. "It's really a regular home-use pool system for heating and recirculating his water and it died." "Very cold temperatures were coming. It was critical to get him moved," Fox said. Snow covered much of the region on Friday and tem...

  • Elida outlasts Buffs 71-67

Dave Wagner, The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 12, 2022

ELIDA — First, it looked like Elida was going to smoke Melrose in Wednesday’s Class 1A boys state quarterfinal game. Then it looked like the Buffaloes might take control. But in a game of runs, it came down to the final minutes, as may have been expected, and the Tigers closed on a 10-2 surge to oust the Buffs 71-67. The win earned second-seeded Elida (22-5) a semifinal date on Friday against No. 3 Mesilla Valley (22-1) at Bernalillo H.S. The championship game was slated for 6 p.m. on Saturday at The Pit in Albuquerque. Jun...

the Staff of The News|Updated Mar 12, 2022

TYLER, Texas — Freshman right-hander Noah De La Riva survived a bit of a rough beginning to give Eastern New Mexico University eight innings on Friday, and the Greyhounds used two big rallies to knock off Texas-Tyler 11-6 in the opener of a four-game Lone Star Conference weekend baseball series. ENMU (6-11, 5-10 LSC), winning for the fourth time in five games, put together four consecutive run-scoring hits, capped by a two-run doubled from designated hitter Kian Johnston, to take a 5-0 lead in the top of the first. But the P...

The Wildcats' scheduled Friday matchup against Gallup was canceled due to wet field conditions caused by overnight snow. They were scheduled to face Moriarty in their weekend finale on Saturday afternoon. The Cats (1-4) opened a four-run lead with three in the bottom of the fifth, with the first...

the Staff of The News|Updated Mar 12, 2022

BERNALILLO - Elida was set for a major challenge in Saturday night's Class 1A boys state championship basketball game at The Pit in Albuquerque. As Clovis Christian can attest, the Tigers were going to have a big hill to climb. Meantime, top-seeded defending champion Magdalena showed it will be hard to...

  • Opinion: Republicans must stand against attempts like Griffin's

Merrit Hamilton Allen, Syndicated content|Updated Mar 12, 2022

New Mexico is in the Washington Post again. A couple weeks ago it was about the governor leaving governing to be a substitute teacher. On March 2, it was all about the self-inflicted circus at the Otero County Commission over the 2020 election. The Cliff’s Notes version of the story is this: After Jan. 6 rioter Couy Griffin and some well-known conspiracy theorists made some wild, unsubstantiated and plain goofy assertions regarding the 2020 election in Otero County, the commissioners voted unanimously to hire uber-flaky E...

  • Opinion: Freedom Convoy can't match Ukraine bravery

    Leonard Pitts, Syndicated content|Updated Mar 12, 2022

They drove 64 miles in a circle. That’s the length of the Capital Beltway, the ribbon of asphalt that loops around Washington, D.C. For over four hours last Sunday, the so-called “People’s Convoy,” estimated at about a thousand trucks, RVs and cars drove that circle in protest. In protest of what? Well, take your pick. Many drivers -- nearly all white, nearly all men -- flew flags supporting Donald Trump or opposing Joe Biden. Some displayed Confederate battle flags and pla...

  • Opinion: Biden's speech was weak, meandering

    Michael Reagan, Syndicated content|Updated Mar 12, 2022

First we wondered what President Biden was going to say in his first State of the Union address that was new, upbeat or important. Then we found out. Nothing. Biden meandered around for an hour. Committing a few gaffes and making false claims about his alleged successes, he pretended his 13-month string of failures at home and overseas was some other country’s nightmare. He pandered to union auto workers and spent most of the time rehashing the Build Back Better promises he m...

  • Opinion: Right thing done in rejecting Women's Health Protection Act

    Christine Flowers, Syndicated content|Updated Mar 12, 2022

Sometimes, the stars align, and things happen the way they’re supposed to. Like starting Women’s History Month with a wonderful gift to women, or at least the unborn kind. On the eve of the 31-day period that celebrates the beauty, the intelligence, the talent, the majesty and all of the other traits shared by the sisterhood, the Senate by a 48-46 margin rejected attempts to codify Roe v. Wade and provide women with a federal right to abortion. The coyly named “Wo...

  • Opinion: Starting to have Cold War concerns

    Rube Render, Local columnist|Updated Mar 12, 2022

Next month I will turn 80. An octogenarian. In my head, I’m still 30 years old, lean, mean and suntanned. No male member of my immediate family lived to make it to 59 besides me. If I had known that I would last this long, I would have taken a lot better care of myself. I’ve never considered myself an optimist nor a pessimist. More like a realist, or a pragmatist. Hope for the best, plan for the worst. That seemed like a good plan for everyone. In my advanced years I’m afrai...

  • Opinion: School choice option one potential solution for teacher shortages

David Stevens, The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 12, 2022

Teacher shortages are making headlines across the country. The Learning Policy Institute tells us more than 200,000 teachers leave the profession each year. A 2018 study found the nation was short at least 100,000 teachers. Those numbers have not improved during COVID. New Mexico estimates it is short 1,000 certified teachers today. Clovis alone is short about 50 teachers. Teachers are unhappy and leaving the profession for a lot of different reasons – pay, politicians meddling, parents feuding, school boards pushing a...

The action cuts the tax by an eighth of a percent starting July 1 and then a quarter of a percent reduction in July 2023. Also included in HB 163: a refundable child tax credit of up to $175 per child, a one-time refundable tax rebate of...

County elections on June 7 will feature seven contested races between Curry and Roosevelt counties. That includes three candidates for sheriff in Roosevelt County and county commission seats in both counties. Curry County initially had a contested race for sheriff, but retired New Mexico State Police Officer Jimmy Glascock withdrew from the race against Mike Reeves on Wednesday. “If I were to take office, my son will not be able to continue serving with the Sheriff’s Office, which makes it harder for me than it’s worth to co... Full story

The largest outlay was $20 million granted to the Eastern New Mexico Water Utility Authority for its Ute Lake Water Project. The project also received a $...
