  • Clovis routs Ruidoso to open Goddard Invitational

The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 15, 2018

ROSWELL - For the second time in three days, the Clovis Wildcats played a 4A school just starting its baseball season. And for the second time, an experienced Clovis team wasn't tested. The Wildcats had eight hits, took advantage of five Ruidoso errors and got enough pitching in five innings for an 18-4 victory to open the Goddard Invitational Thursday morning. Senior Connor Langrell went 2-for-2 with a pair of bases-loaded triples for Clovis (8-2), which plays 7 p.m. Friday a...

  • Hounds prep for spring football season

    Updated Mar 15, 2018

PORTALES - Fresh off of a 2017 season in which it narrowly lost out on a Lone Star Conference title, while also cracking the NCAA Division II Top 25 for the first time since 2003, the Eastern New Mexico football team will be back in action this coming Monday to begin its annual spring practices, which will conclude with the Green and Silver Game on April 13. The Hounds, who went 8-2 a year ago, barely missed the Division II playoffs in '17. And while great players like Kamal C...

CLOVIS — The Clovis City Commission is hopeful local travelers can soon head north or east when they plan a trip from Clovis Municipal Airport. The commission voted unanimously to accept a proposal from Boutique Airlines for 18 federally subsidized round-trip flights weekly — 12 to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and six to Denver International Airport. Boutique has served Clovis since June 2014 with Essential Air Service. Throughout its time in Clovis, Civil Aviation Board members have inquired about the pos...

  • Clovis track confident pieces will fit

    Peter Stein|Updated Mar 15, 2018

CLOVIS - The Clovis boys track and field team should be strong, deep and built for success this spring. The only questions are who will emerge where. The Wildcats are bursting with talent, most of it young, all over their roster. And in the nice-problem-to-have category, new head coach Mark Sena and his staff are waiting to see who will fit in best at which events. "We've got a lot of underclassmen that are very talented and may make their presence known sometime during this...

  • Portales routs Kermit for first win of baseball season

The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 15, 2018

EUNICE - Gusting winds at the Eunice Cardinal Classic couldn't stop Portales baseball from dominating in all facets of Thursday's game against Kermit. The Rams poured it on the Yellowjackets to the tune of 13-1 to earn their first win of 2018. "The wind was blowing really hard from left field, which made us hit the ball more towards the middle, which I think was good for us," Rams coach Dusty Nusser said. "We hit it hard a few times (in the early going), but it was right at th...

    The Associated Press|Updated Mar 15, 2018

OKLAHOMA CITY — After trying unsuccessfully for months to obtain lethal injection drugs, Oklahoma officials plan to use nitrogen gas to execute inmates once the state resumes using the death penalty, marking the first time a U.S. state would use the gas to carry out capital punishment. State Attorney General Mike Hunter and Department of Corrections Director Joe Allbaugh jointly announced the plan, saying the two agencies would work together to develop new protocols over the next several months. “We can no longer sit on the...

  • No lack of seats in ag

Audra Brown, Down on the farm|Updated Mar 15, 2018

If standing wasn’t so tiring, I don’t think we’d be nearly as interested in finding ways to sit. But given that it does take a toll, there’s sense in finding alternatives. Sitting is a surprisingly common situation on any given day somewhere in the agriculture business. Sitting in a pickup is common to both the field and pasture and in between, and is one of the more comfortable and flexible seats to find yourself in. Jobs that get done from that seat are often quicker or at l...

The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 15, 2018

EUNICE — The defending Class 3A champion Wolverines picked up right where they left off in 2017, clubbing Tularosa 21-0 to open the Eunice Cardinal Classic. Luke Phipps went 3-for-3 to lead a 10-hit attack for Texico (1-0), which didn’t win the game via mercy rule — though it was certainly headed that way before tournament officials enforced a two-hour time limit after three innings. The Wolverines have only had a few days off since Saturday’s Class 3A basketball title game to get ready on the diamond, but coach Ty Thatcher s...

  • Nothing quite like that son-light-saving time

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated Mar 15, 2018

Well, we’ve just made it through one more time change. I’ll check in a minute (note the subtle time reference), but I always have to think about whether we’re going on to Daylight Saving Time or going off of it. On is the spring thing, right? We seem to be doing one or the other pretty much all of the time, or at least every ten minutes or so. About the time my internal clock makes peace with the most recent chrono-lux-economy change, it’s time for the next one. The handy l...

  • God molds us as a glassblower molds glass

    Judy Brandon|Updated Mar 15, 2018

One of the highlights of my childhood was our family's trip to Niagara Falls. On a winding road in Missouri on our route to New York State, Daddy noticed an advertisement for a glassblower's shop. He read the sign out loud: "Glassblowing 4 miles. Visitors welcome." So Daddy decided that this was something that we needed to see. We followed the little community's main street and the roadway signs to the glassblower's headquarters. After Daddy parked in front of the little...
