    Ron Warnick|Updated Mar 18, 2019

ALBUQUERQUE – The Melrose boys basketball team finished a mediocre 4-4 in district play and landed just a No. 5 seed in the Class 1A state tournament. But Saturday night, the Buffaloes captured their second straight state championship with a 54-50 victory over No. 2-seeded Fort Sumner, their district rival, at the DreamStyle Arena, aka The Pit. "If you would have told me we'd be in this position this year, I would have told you you were crazy last year," Melrose coach Kevin La...

  • Portales girls fall to top seed Kirtland Central

The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 16, 2019

ALBUQUERQUE — Portales coach Wade Fraze always tells his players that once you reach the state basketball tournament, the seed is just a number. It doesn’t find open players, it doesn’t pull down rebounds, it doesn’t make free throws. But Portales also knew that top-seeded Kirtland Central was a pretty good team. The young Rams found out just how good Tuesday, as the Broncos controlled matters in a 71-39 victory at The Pit. Monique Shim had 18 points to lead three in double figures, and nine scorers overall for the Broncos...

Jude Segura added 15 for the Foxes (23-8), who will face either Melrose or Quemado in the 6 p.m. championship game. Fort Sumner won the Class 2A title last season, and was moved to Class 1A after the New Mexico Activities consolidated its six classifications into five. The second-seeded Foxes led by as many as 17 in the second half, a...

  • WT edges Greyhounds in closing seconds of NCAA first-rounder

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Mar 16, 2019

CANYON, Texas — You can play a close-to-perfect 39:40, and then play perfect defense for 19 more seconds, and that's enough to win nearly every college basketball game. But that's why it's called March Madness, and why Lexy Hightower was a runaway winner for Lone Star Conference player of the year. The junior guard delivered one more time Friday, escaping a tight Eastern New Mexico double team and drawing the foul that gave her the game-winning free throws with 0.7 seconds l...

PORTALES - A happy homecoming it wasn't for the Eastern New Mexico baseball team. After four straight games in Stephensville,Texas battling Tarleton State, the Greyhounds played host for the first time in nearly two weeks. But ENMU struggled to stifle the red-hot Texas A&M-Kingsville bats and dropped the opening game of the four game non-conference series 16-4 on Friday afternoon at Greyhound Field. The Javelinas (13-7) opened the game with a six-run first inning, but Eastern...

The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 16, 2019

PORTALES — Eastern New Mexico’s softball team didn’t fare much better than its baseball counterparts Friday, beginning a short homestand by falling to Cameron 7-2 at Greyhound Field. The Hounds tied up the contest in the bottom of the second at 2-2, but couldn't keep pace with a Cameron offense that followed up two runs in the top of the second with two-run frames in both the third and fourth innings. Senior Kimberly Herron suffered the loss, knocking her season record to 6-7. Junior Precious Aguirre recorded the lone multi-h...

  • Texico boys eliminated

The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 16, 2019

ALBUQUERQUE – Texico’s boys basketball team made a go of it against one of the state’s elite teams. The fourth-seeded Wolverines wanted more than just making a go of it in Friday morning’s State 2A semifinal at The Pit, wanted a return trip to the state championship game. They had to settle for a stirring comeback and, ultimately, a 73-67 overtime loss to top-seeded and defending state champ Pecos. But they had gone down swinging. A little consolation for head coach Ty Thatcher. “I feel like any time the season ends on a loss...

Celeste Jimenez led the Coyotes (28-4) with 21 points that included going 14-for-18 from the free throw line. Tatum went 34-for-42 from the charity stripe, while Melrose (24-7) went...

  • Lineup anyone's guess

    Peter Stein, Staff writer|Updated Mar 16, 2019

PORTALES — The Portales baseball season will be like a two-month-long tryout. As sixth-year head coach Dusty Nusser moves players around, sees how they fit, where they can maximize their abilities, he will guarantee few a continuous starting role. “A lot of guys are going to get an opportunity,” Nusser said. “If they can make the best of it, that’s good for our team. It’s going to be about making the best of your opportunities and going from there. Just because you started in the first game doesn’t mean you’ll be starting gam...
