The rout moved the Mustangs from 17th to 13th in this week’s NCAA Division II rankings. Still, Midwestern State coach Bill Maskill said he isn’t sure what to make of it. “We’ve never scored 52 points out of the box,” said Maskill, in his ninth year as MSU’s coach. “I think our program has strengths and weaknesses, like everybody else. “We’ve got some good athletes; we just have high expe... Full story

  • In search of ponies: Sometimes dreams come true

    Sharna Johnson

I still remember the day I learned dreams can come true. I must have been 7 or 8 and my dad, little brother and I drove to a surprise destination on my birthday. We arrived at the stockyard and my new horse was led out. It was the best day of my life. He was dark brown, small and kind of skinny with big ears but I didn’t care, he was a horse. I had dreamed of a horse for as long as I could remember. A soon as I could read I devoured the Misty of Chincoteague books and f...

  • McGee: Where were you on 9/11?

Tuesday, 11 September 2001. Nine years. Hard to believe those attacks on our homeland were nine years ago. When I think of that day I often think of the Sept. 11 song by country singer Alan Jackson, “Where Were You When The World Stopped Turning?” Where were you when the world stopped turning? I was in Arizona living in a small town near the Mexican border and working at a weekly newspaper in Tombstone. I remember moving through that day was like walking through molasses, stunned by the attack on our homeland, wondering what...

  • Military mama: Hard getting used to idea of growing old

I recently celebrated my birthday, and am soon attending a high school reunion. I though nothing else could remind me more that my teens have long since slipped away. Apparently I was wrong. I realize that I’m nowhere near “old” in relation to a traditional lifespan, however there are subtle reminders that make me inwardly cringe. I recently had an experience that had me looking over my shoulder trying to figure out who this person could possibly be addressing. “Ma’am” is something I’m certainly used to hearing, howe...
