    Jamie Cushman|Updated Mar 22, 2018

Clovis will have two representatives at this year’s New Mexico Spelling Bee taking place on Saturday at Sandia Preparatory School in Albuquerque. Zia Elementary fourth-grader Jaxon Bender and Yucca Middle School eighth-grader Jorge Barraza earned their spots in the statewide competition during the Clovis district spelling bee held on Jan. 19. • ENMU track home at last

The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 22, 2018

PORTALES — The Eastern New Mexico University Open is by any metric a small track meet, with the Greyhounds getting set to compete Saturday with just three other schools. But the small meet is a big deal for a program that came back from a decades-long hiatus in 2006, but is still somewhat out of sight, out of mind. "You can read about it in the newspaper, things like that, but for the community to come out and see these athletes run it's pretty special," ENMU track coach J...

  • Prairie chickens fewer but still dancing

    Betty Williamson|Updated Mar 22, 2018

Most mornings — if the wind isn’t flinging sand and hurling tumbleweeds — I am outside close to sunrise to take a few quiet sips of the sweetness of dawn on the High Plains. That little cup of pure, soul-satisfying nature is even better this time of year because it is also the season when our shyest and most reclusive neighbors, the lesser prairie chickens, set aside their inhibitions and return to the leks — their historic breeding grounds — for a few weeks of loud and reckl...

  • Local makes home underground

    David Grieder|Updated Mar 22, 2018

CLOVIS — He's made his home in a hole in the ground on Clovis' west side. Sean Heron, 43, said he has been there for over a year not hiding, and not seeking attention. But he has attracted attention in recent days from police and area residents. Police discovered him March 9 after being alerted "that a guy was living in the ground" near a field, according to a Clovis Police Department incident report. The reporting party said that "since a park was very close by, he thought i... Full story

    Eamon Scarbrough|Updated Mar 22, 2018

FLOYD — With two performances this year instead of the three that attendees are familiar with, the organizers of the 68th annual Floyd Lions Club Country Jamboree are hoping to give audiences the most "bang for their buck." "What our goal is, is to bring as many people as we have been, and have as many people in the two nights as we have had in the three," master of ceremonies Dave Nash said of the country music event that will take place at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday at t...

  • Public Regulation Commission approves wind project

    Eamon Scarbrough|Updated Mar 21, 2018

Xcel Energy has crossed a major hurdle in its path to making its 1,230-megawatt wind energy project a reality. The New Mexico Public Regulation Commission voted unanimously on Wednesday to approve the Sagamore Wind Project, located 20 miles southeast of Portales, as well as the Hale Wind Project in Texas. This result followed close to a month of debate about a mechanism Xcel had proposed in order to recover the cost of the $1.6 billion project. The mechanism involved an undisclosed rate increase to Xcel customers before the...

  • Official: Portales budget still OK

    Eamon Scarbrough|Updated Mar 21, 2018

An $80,000 reduction in the City of Portales’ total fund balance for the 2017-2018 fiscal year isn’t cause for alarm, according to Finance Director Marilyn Rapp. In her report of budget adjustments at the council’s Tuesday meeting, Rapp credited the reduction with a $1.3 million loan payment the council had money set aside for but hadn’t budgeted. The transfer, according to Rapp, was for the first loan payment on the city’s wastewater treatment plant, which is due in April. She added that the reduction in the balance doesn’t...

Curry County Road Superintendent Dennis Fury said if the CR 11 project...
