  • Faith: Praising the day of ultimate victory in Christ

    Curtis Shelburne, Religion columnist|Updated Mar 21, 2023

“This is the day that the Lord has made / We will rejoice and be glad in it.” If you find your brain putting the tune to those lyrics in your head, you probably learned it in Sunday School or Vacation Bible School. It’s a nice song, with a great message, though it is most certainly a potential “ear worm.” As “ear worms” go (songs that get stuck in your head), it beats the daylights out of “Achy Breaky Heart” and such mind-numbing atrocities. But I confess to a bit of a strain...

House Schools Superintendent Bonnie Lightfoot was placed on paid administrative leave March 14 by the House Municipal School Board. Parents said the move was in response to the handling of an alleged threat made by a student but school board members would not confirm. The unanimous vote to place Lightfoot on paid leave followed a 2 ½-hour executive session. Lightfoot left the board's meeting room with board members but was not with them when they returned to the...

the Staff of The News|Updated Mar 21, 2023

SAN ANGELO, Texas – Angelo State made the most of five hits on Saturday and the Rambelles defeated Eastern New Mexico University 4-1 to take their Lone Star Conference softball series. ENMU (17-16, 9-12 LSC) had ended a 15-game losing streak against Angelo on Friday in the second game of a doubleheader, but the Greyhounds were unable to build on that success in the finale. Junior right-hander Genesis Armendariz (12-5), who is from Hobbs, earned her second win of the weekend, allowing seven hits with two walks and six s...

  • Cats collect two walkoff victories over Mayfield

Dave Wagner, The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 21, 2023

CLOVIS – Clovis High's baseball team picked an opportune time in each game to take its only leads – at the very end. The Wildcats erased deficits of three runs in the opener and six in the nightcap to post a 6-5, 9-8 sweep of Mayfield on Saturday at Bell Park, winning both games in the bottom of the seventh. It was the third and fourth wins in the last five games for the Cats (5-7). "I think the kids are starting to buy into what we're doing," CHS coach Richard Cruce sai...

  • Opinion: Carlson, Fox News dangerous fakes

    Elwood Watson, Syndicated content|Updated Mar 21, 2023

What is going on with Tucker Carlson? In private messages unearthed by lawsuits against Fox News, the fiery host was a fierce critic of former President Donald Trump, even as he continued to praise and defend him on television. “We are very, very close to being able to ignore Trump most nights,” Carlson wrote in one message, adding, “I truly can’t wait.” “We’re all pretending we’ve got a lot to show for it, because admitting what a disaster it’s been is too tough to digest....

  • Opinion: Biden administration destroying banking

    Michael Reagan, Syndicated content|Updated Mar 21, 2023

Banking must have been next on the to-do list of the things the Biden administration is planning to destroy. In two years, President Biden and the wrecking crew of crazies, wokesters and career incompetents he has put into his government have screwed up every corner of America. Everything from the economy and our military to our kitchen gas stoves has already been wrecked or is under threat from the Biden White House. Even the entire world is in danger, thanks to the wizards i...

  • Opinion: Transparency is key corruption deterrent in our governments

New Mexico Foundation for Open Government, Syndicated content|Updated Mar 21, 2023

Public officials and employees love transparency in the abstract. In reality: not so much. Transparency in government is a crowd-pleasing election promise that gets set aside in practice. It happens in part because openness takes effort. It takes a daily commitment by public entities to provide access to records, to inform the public as to what is going on, and to allow participation. Transparency also invites scrutiny, and not all public officials and employees want that. Open government also suffers because public...

Maypole, a longstanding tradition at Portales High School, started all the way back in 1929. This year's queen, Amanda Martinez, is the first queen to her family's knowledge with Down syndrome. Cindy Martinez, Amanda's mom, said "I wanted her to be a part of it. Because to me, Maypole is such a big bonding of the seniors." Cindy said Amanda won queen against one other girl running. Amanda, she said, isn't usually one to go all out for events and is usually shy. However, when i...

  • Winds, rain factors in wildfire season

Grant McGee, The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 21, 2023

Wildfire season in eastern New Mexico isn't so much about a time span as it is about conditions. "It's before greenup," National Weather Service Meteorologist Annette Mokry said. "Fine fuels like grasses provide dry fuel before the spring rains." And there is one other key factor: "The winds," Mokry said. "In the spring, we're in this transition period between winter into summer. Winds aloft are still pretty strong. Afternoon heating causes the strong winds aloft to head to...

She said Clovis schools have “historically exceeded the minimum requirements by many hours,” and “we will likely only need to make minor...

  • Governor 'motivated' on public safety issues

The Santa Fe New Mexican, Syndicated content|Updated Mar 21, 2023

SANTA FE -- As Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham started her post-session news conference Saturday, she already knew the score. Of the roughly 40 public safety bills introduced this year, the governor said she championed 10. “We have about a handful up, and out of 40, it’s 10 [that passed], and not all of those would really constitute what I think are strong public safety measures,” she said. “I know that is an area that you want me to say I’m disappointed,” Lujan Grisham added. “I’m motivated. I am very motivated to find additio...
