  • ENMU, Fort Smith split series

the Staff of The News|Updated Mar 22, 2022

PORTALES - For a while, Eastern New Mexico University was one of the hottest teams in the Lone Star Conference. Strong pitching from Arkansas-Fort Smith in the final two games cooled off the Greyhounds, who were trying for their third consecutive LSC series win. After taking the first two matchups in the four-game set, giving them eight wins over a 10-game stretch, the Hounds nearly got shut out in the nightcap of Saturday's doubleheader, then fell apart late in a 13-4...

Dave Wagner, The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 22, 2022

PORTALES - For a program trying to build, the start of the Lone Star Conference season has been a gauntlet for Eastern New Mexico University's softball team. With Friday's twin bill against Texas A&M-Kingsville, the Greyhounds had opened the league slate with consecutive doubleheaders against five teams ranked in NCAA Division II's top 25. That stretch ended on Sunday, when the Hounds (9-19, 2-10) split a pair against Texas A&M International at Greyhound Softball Field. They...

  • Opinion: Reading great education contribution

    Tom McDonald, Syndicated content|Updated Mar 22, 2022

I firmly believe that the greatest contribution to my daughters’ education wasn’t in helping them get through high school or even college. It was in teaching them a love for reading. Often it came as bedtime stories by Dr. Seuss, or one of the tales of the Berenstain Bears, or through a Japanese children’s book I couldn’t read but their mother could. Whatever it was, they came to look forward to it every night and their love for books grew with time. As parents, we didn’t teach them to read, but by the time they were old...

  • With luck, new lamp won't need string to stay upright

    Betty Williamson, Local columnist|Updated Mar 22, 2022

When your favorite floor lamp only stays upright because it’s been lashed securely to a nearby end table with 10-ply string, it could be time for a replacement. So it is at my house, which has triggered a shopping expedition into the overwhelming array of choices that exist to bring illumination to our homes. One online retailer I looked at offers more than 4,000 selections for floor lamps alone. Yikes. It’s a good week to appreciate my grandparents’ kerosene lamps. Electricit...

  • Opinion: 'Law' always benefits the elite

    Kent McManigal, Local columnist|Updated Mar 22, 2022

It’s aggravating that New Mexico’s Supreme Court decided the petitions aimed at possibly holding the New Mexico governor accountable for her COVID overreach were “legally invalid.” Aggravating, but not surprising. Somehow the “law” always benefits the elite political class and their schemes at the expense of the rest of us and our liberty. Whenever mere people try to hold government accountable and make it stay within its clear boundaries, the state finds a way to brush their...

  • Opinion: Pandemic should still be treated with concern

Las Vegas Optic, Syndicated content|Updated Mar 22, 2022

Almost exactly two years after the entire world shut down due to the initial threat of COVID-19, the state of New Mexico’s Department of Health has made it clear it no longer views it as a priority. Recently, acting Health Secretary David Scrase told the media that the staff that has been tasked with compiling daily COVID-19 data will be reassigned to their previous responsibilities, and COVID-19 updates will be provided by an automated system. Daily numbers will no longer be broken down county-by-county. Instead, that w...

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has called the state Legislature back to Santa Fe for a special session slated to start April 5. Legislators wrapped up their regular session Feb. 17. "We just have to work on three things," said Sen. Pat Woods, R-Broadview. "They should have this all worked out in advance and we should a...

  • No bears, no traps on city golf course

Grant McGee, The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 22, 2022

CLOVIS — There are no goose traps, let alone “bear traps” at Clovis’ Colonial Park golf course. The topic came up at last week’s Clovis City Commission meeting as golfers took their turns before commissioners to complain about conditions at the course. Weeds were frequently mentioned along with poor turf conditions and “bear traps” on the course. Commissioner Helen Casaus wanted to know, “What are these bear traps everyone’s talking about? Surely we don’t have bears out there.” A brief discussion followed and consensus was th...

She sent us an email explaining PBS management decided to stop promoting the show with the column since it's been in reruns for three years. We thought this was a good time to recap the show's history. Sheryl Borden took her skills giving presentations to homemakers in Roosevelt and Curry counties into a public...
