Two-term U.S. Sen. Tom Udall, D-New Mexico, announced Monday morning he will not seek re-election to a third term in 2020. "I'm confident that we could run a strong campaign next year to earn a third term, because of all the work you and I have done together, along with my wife, Jill, and my incredibly dedicated staff," Udall said in a statement. "But the worst thing anyone in public office can do is believe the office belongs to them, rather than to the people they represent. That's why I'm announcing today that I won't be...
CLOVIS - Don't count the Clovis baseball team out. Despite their gruesome start, the Wildcats seem like they've gotten it together. Tuesday, the 'Cats won their third straight by zipping Portales 3-0 at Bell Park. The shutout pitching of junior Matthew Rubio helped, but Clovis is playing with a different attitude than the team that opened against Lubbock-Coronado three weeks earlier. The Wildcats are making plays in the field, they're showing patience at the plate. And...
LOVINGTON — Behind six event wins and a strong performance in relays, the Portales boys track team, had a solid showing at Friday’s Lovington Wildcat Relays. The Rams took wins in the 800 and 1,600 relays, finished second in the 400 relay and took third in the medley relay as part of a 75-point day. That put them just out of reach of third-place Hobbs with 77. Midland Christian won both the girls and boys meets, scoring 119 on the boys side and 130 on the girls side. The 800 relay with Wromiah Gbassagee, Lesther Oliva And...
KINGSVILLE, Texas — Playing the nation’s 11th-ranked Division II team is probably going to be a challenge. And it certainly was for Eastern New Mexico’s softball team on Friday. Though the Greyhounds pushed Texas A&M-Kingsville to the final inning in the second game of a doubleheader, they fell 4-2 in that contest after dropping the opener 8-0. In the nightcap, a home run over the left field fence from sophomore Jennifer McElroy in the top half of the sixth inning cut a 4-0 Hounds’ deficit in half and gave them a chance...
CLOVIS - It's so early, but Portales' softball team has been like a steamroller already. With Thursday night's 11-2 win over Clovis, the Lady Rams improved to 3-0 - overall and on the road - and had beaten their three opponents by a combined score of 27-4. Though most of their season is still ahead of them, the Rams have been flattening the competition so far. "I think that they're coming in with confidence, ready to play," Portales head coach Nathan Dodge said Thursday at...
BY THE STAFF OF THE NEWS DALLAS — Is there a better way to erase the sting of a two-game losing streak than with a two-game winning streak? Probably not. And that’s exactly what Eastern New Mexico’s baseball team did Friday, opening a four-game non-conference series at Dallas Christian with a doubleheader sweep. The Greyhounds took Game 1 by a 4-3 count before blowing away the Crusaders 10-4 in the second game. In Friday’s opener, ENMU jumped on the board first, as Miles Hilton delivered a two-out, two RBI double to right i...
FARWELL — A few area golf teams got their seasons started off before taking the spring break, as the Farwell Country Club hosted the Texico Invitational on Wednesday. The Clovis girls won the three-team field with 381, with all three teams — Hobbs at 392 and Texico at 401 — getting their first team qualifying legs of the season. A team or individual that hits three qualifying scores, which differ based on the course ratings, will qualify for the state golf meets in May. Qualification is also available through winning the d...
The New Mexico Public Education Department released the graduation rates for the 2017-18 school year on Tuesday and nearly all of the local districts in eastern New Mexico once again topped the statewide average, including one of the two districts in the Land of Enchantment to receive a perfect 100 percent. Melrose Municipal Schools joined Springer Municipal Schools as the only districts to tally a 100 percent graduation rate, up from 79.7 percent in the 2016-17 school year in Melrose. Superintendent Jamie Widner said he was...
CLOVIS — A panel of district attorneys has completed its review of the officer-involved deadly force incident last year in Clovis but has yet to forward its recommendations to the local prosecutor. 11th Judicial District Attorney Rick Tedrow, liaison for the panel system used in reviewing such incidents statewide, said prosecutors met March 14-15th in Santa Fe to discuss two cases before them. Among those was the Oct. 8 incident in which Clovis Police officer Brent Aguilar shot Aaron Chavez to death south of the Prince Street...
PORTALES — City residents have until April 4 to weigh in on the expansion of existing tax funds for economic development in Portales. Ordinance No. 737, the only item on the city’s first mail-in only ballot for a special election in years, does not increase taxes but broadens their use. Adopted in January by the Portales city council, the ordinance “amends existing code to expand the uses of Local Economic Development Act (LEDA) funds that assist the community in attracting businesses into Portales or improving busin...
