  • Nothing like a donation you can work for

    Betty Williamson, Local columnist|Updated Mar 23, 2024

Some of my most dismal high school memories are of those dreaded ventures around Portales attempting to sell yearbook ads. Even as a teenager, it felt to me like we were asking for something we probably didn’t deserve, and even then I knew that every business we walked into was being visited by kids from every other school with requests like ours. That may be part of why I loved hearing about an experience Leslie Creighton had with a student who came into her family’s Por...

the Staff of The News|Updated Mar 23, 2024

Court records allege a bus driven by Poitras ran a red light at the intersection of West Second Street and South Avenue C. Poitras’ vehicle collided with a 2010 Toyota driven by Polanco, 61, which resulted in Polanco’s death, rec...

While the Clovis High baseball team is already well into its season, Portales High was just getting started in Tuesday night's matchup at Ram Field. The hit gave the Cats (6-5) a 5-3 lead, and they held on with sophomore left-hander Joseph Hernandez working the final four innings in relief and allowing just two hits and a run. "...

  • Hounds rally for 6-5 win over Falcons

Dave Wagner, The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 23, 2024

Ruger Bravo found himself in an unusual position on Friday night. With no relief appearances since his freshman season in 2022, Bravo came in from the bullpen in the sixth inning charged with protecting a one-run lead in the opener of a key four-game Lone Star Conference series against Texas-Permian Basin. The senior left-hander allowed no runs over four two-hit innings, and the Greyhounds held on for a 6-5 victory at Greyhound Field. The teams were scheduled for two seven-inning tilts on Saturday. If you spend some time with Clovis' Christy Mendoza you may believe she speaks directly, forcefully. "I was taught to speak so everyone could hear. People think I'm angry, but I'm not," Mendoza said. Mendoza stopped by the offices of The News on Thursday to talk about her life. Q: So you were born in Los Angeles? A: In the Queen of Angels hospital. I lived there until I was 10 years old. Q: What are some of your memories of Los Angeles? A: Downtown L.A. The Bradbury Building,...

  • Some spring breaks more memorable than fun

    Karl Terry, Local columnist|Updated Mar 23, 2024

Hearing about students and families on spring breaks this last week or so has brought out a streak of jealously in me. I did spend a few spring breaks backpacking and actually had one beach vacation when I was in college. It wasn’t your typical beach spring break though. A buddy and I who were both into scuba diving at the time decided Blue Hole and Conchas Lake wasn’t going to cut it any longer. We wanted warm salt water, some reef action and an adventure. After res...

  • Clovis schools oppose PED's 180-day rule

Madison Willis, The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 23, 2024

In hopes of challenging the state's Public Education Department's proposed changes to school calendars, the Clovis Municipal Schools Board on Tuesday unanimously voted to be part of a planned lawsuit. The board approved a resolution supporting CMS Superintendent Renee Russ joining the New Mexico Superintendents Association's opposition to the 180-day rule ordered by the PED. Multiple area school superintendents have said they also will join in the planned lawsuit. The mission...

  • Opinion: Politics opposite of what I try to do

    Kent McManigal, Local columnist|Updated Mar 23, 2024

About the most hurtful thing anyone can say about me is to describe my writing as “political.” It wounds me more deeply than almost any other words can. Politics is what someone is doing when they encourage others to vote for or against something. Or someone. Politics is what people engage in when they advocate yet another law aimed at the rest of society or want existing laws enforced more violently. Politics says this politician will be better at running your life than som...

  • Opinion: Draft may be job Americans won't do

    Rube Render, Local columnist|Updated Mar 23, 2024

I received greetings from my local draft board in 1962. At the time I was serving with the U.S. Marines in Japan. The letter had my correct mailing address, including my current rank, service number and unit as well as FPO, San Francisco, Cal. The FPO stands for Fleet Post Office. The address should have been a clue that I was on active duty. Back in the day, when you graduated from high school, if you were an 18-year-old male, you could almost count on being drafted shortly....

  • Opinion: Sunshine, public comment needed for open government

    Walter Rubel, Syndicated content|Updated Mar 23, 2024

Most Americans think we have the right to attend public meetings and let our elected officials know what we think about how they’re doing. There is no such right in New Mexico. Our open meetings law requires that accommodations be made for the public to attend and listen to meetings of the city council, county commission and other government boards and commissions. But, there’s nothing that says we have the right to speak at those meetings. It’s up to each board to set its own rules. Typically, elected leaders under...

  • Speed-detection cameras installed and active in Portales

Landry Sena, The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 23, 2024

Speed-detection cameras are active around school zones in the city of Portales, with a “grace period” in place until April 19. After the grace period, drivers will be charged $100 for speed-limit violations. Last year, Portales Police Chief Chris Williams presented an automated traffic enforcement study to the Portales City Council that showed drivers in the city aren’t too compliant when it comes to obeying posted speed limits. “This is an additional measure that our police department is taking to keep our community safe,...

  • Residents overwhelmingly opposed to possible school changes

Grant McGee, The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 23, 2024

Area residents at Tuesday’s school board meeting were overwhelmingly opposed to Clovis Municipal Schools’ plans to close and repurpose campuses. During the “open forum” portion of the session, eight people spoke to the board with concerns ranging from teacher/student ratios to classrooms being located in portable classrooms that wouldn’t stand up to eastern New Mexico weather. The room was filled to capacity with another two-dozen people waiting outside when the meeting began. Here’s a summary of some of the community c...

  • Superintendent: Closures being considered with heavy heart

Madison Willis, The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 23, 2024

Cameo Elementary School will close, Lockwood Elementary will become a preschool center and the Freshman Academy will move to Clovis High School. Those are among recommendations Clovis Municipal Schools board members will be asked to consider in the coming month. "We want to emphasize that we are just now starting the conversation period. We did take the last week or 10 days or so to go personally visit campuses that might be most directly impacted through recommendations,"...
