  • The Spouse Briefs: Lucky is all about attitude

    Rebecca Adling CMI columnist

While packing to take my oldest son to the hospital for brain surgery, I came across a shirt we had bought for him around St Patrick's Day. On the shirt was the phrase "Born Lucky." I looked at it for a moment and thought having a congenital abnormality in his brain which was causing it to be crushed didn't seem to qualify him. I packed it anyway because it was one of his favorite shirts and reflected the kind of attitude he had about the world. Unlike the majority of kids who feel mad at the normal limitations their bodies...

  • Editorial: More striving to uncover flaws in justice system

    The Dallas Morning News

The drama was impossibly lost in the cobwebs of history, dating back 120 years this Juneteenth. Not even the descendants of Isaac "Ike" Bruce knew the account of his close call with vigilante justice in the raw, young state of Texas. In important ways, the case has eerie parallels with stories of justice gone awry today, both disturbing and uplifting. Rough-hewn Texas of 1892 did not take crime lightly. Twelve men were hanged that year in official executions, nine of them black. Texas was also a hotbed of lynchings, and 1892...

  • My turn: Dear friend worked to save book collection

    Betty Williamson PNT columnist

There's an African proverb that says, "When an old man dies, a library burns down." It honors the loss of a lifetime of memories, experiences, lessons, and stories. But for my dear friend, Richard Lambirth, the proverb might need to be rewritten. Richard died early this month, after a lifetime of seriously collecting books, many reflecting his love of history and the American West. When he learned more than a year ago that he had a fatal illness, Richard and his wife, Bettye, immediately set about cataloging his vast... Full story

"There have been outbreaks in various states around the country since January," Smelser said. Smelser said there have been 254 cases of whooping cough statewide since... Full story

  • Officials mixed on jail bond issue

Robin Fornoff CMI content managing editor

Curry County Commission Chairman Wendell Bostwick's push to place an already voter-rejected $9.3 million jail bond issue on the Nov. 6 general election ballot is receiving mixed reviews from other commissioners. Voters defeated the same bond issue in an April special election. While Commissioner Frank Blackburn thinks asking voters again in November is "a good idea," Commissioner Robert Sandoval isn't convinced. "I know we need it. We need it tomorrow," Sandoval said Wednesday. "I'm really not sure that this November is the...
