  • Opinion: Remembering a lower court judge

    Tom McDonald, Syndicated content|Updated Mar 29, 2022

All this national news about Supreme Court judges has me thinking about the judges who make day-to-day differences in our lives, namely, the lower court judges who live and die among us. As a journalist, I’ve known many judges through the years, and have bittersweet memories of one district judge in particular. I came to know him quite well as a reporter in Conway, Ark. His name was Watson Villines, a young man in his 30s who took the higher standards of his job quite seriously. He followed the law in his courtroom, but he a...

  • Opinion: Grieving different for each of us

    Janice Bisset, Local columnist|Updated Mar 29, 2022

Grieving the loss of a loved one looks different for each one of us. When my son died I went in to a state of shock. I cried for months and I couldn’t drive past his apartment without gut-wrenching pain. I couldn’t go through and sort the boxes of his belongings. I couldn’t scatter his ashes because that would mean letting go and I was unable to do that. I felt guilty because I couldn’t have a proper funeral for him but I couldn’t say goodbye. I’m still not saying goodbye, but I am finally ready to create a memorial fo...

  • Opinion: Govern yourself so you violate no one else

    Kent McManigal, Local columnist|Updated Mar 29, 2022

Life is too short to waste it trying to govern other people. If you’re honest you’ll admit you have enough to keep you busy just controlling – governing -- yourself. Even if you have it all worked out and you are perfect, your perfection collapses the moment you try to govern someone besides yourself. It’s your responsibility to govern yourself. It’s not your responsibility to govern anyone else. In fact, governing others is something no one has the right to do. Nor can you d...
