The wind that whips through eastern New Mexico and the Texas Panhandle sends dust dancing through the streets. It rattles doors and windows, unravels neatly pinned hair, and leaves residents stumbling in its path. Harnessing its power has never been a more popular pursuit. Wind energy developers from across the nation see a region ripe for colonization, with stretches of undeveloped land and winds that race through the region at a yearly average of more than 12 miles per hour, according to officials. “Some places have gold a...

Some pranks were minor, and some were doozies. Portales city employee Cathy Kennedy said her husband looks forward to April Fools’ Day. “My husband always gets the drop on me,” Kennedy said. “He called me once (on April Fools’ Day) and said ‘Well, I just quit my job.’ I was worried. I said, ‘Oh Lord, it’s up to you.’” Fortunately fo...

SANTA FE — Two Roswell lawmakers have gone to court to try to knock their primary election opponents off the ballot. Republican Reps. Keith Gardner, who represents Roosevelt County, and Dan Foley allege in separate lawsuits that their GOP challengers failed to get enough valid voters’ signatures on nominating petitions, in part because some petitions were altered. Gardner claims his opponent, Lucille B. Tucker of Roswell, circulated some petitions that read House District 59, then altered them to read District 66, the cor...

SAN JON — A Department of Public Safety Motor Transportation Division police officer discovered more than $1 million in cash during a safety inspection of a tractor–trailer rig on Thursday. The money, found in denominations of $10 and $20, was bundled and filled a suitcase. “A million dollars is pretty unusual,” said Peter Olson, communications director for the state’s department of public safety. “We’ve come pretty close to that on an airplane that was seized.” The semi-truck entered the San Jon westbound port of entry o...

Today’s topic is April Fools’ Day Hangovers and how to live through them. When I was a kid, the second day of April was a time of thanksgiving, a moment when youngsters across the land turned their eyes skyward and gave tearful thanks for surviving another year of April Fools’ pranks. Everyone felt the same way, because it was obligatory in those days for all stout-hearted little people to shove stickers down their best friend’s gym socks and other innocent gags. No one knew why. It was just the nature of things. But a more f...
William A. Noffsker is to be remembered as a banker and a soldier in the 200th Coast Artillery during World War II, four years of which were in a Japanese prison camp. Returning home to Clovis, he resumed his former position with the Citizens Bank of Clovis and had a distinguished banking career, becoming the senior vice president. Noffsker graduated from Eastern New Mexico Junior College in 1936. At some point, prior to World War II, Noffsker was a fireman with the Clovis Fire Department. Fire Chief R. V. Miller’s daughter,...
The existence, or widespread celebration, of spring break seems to be a recent development. I remember spring break from my young adulthood as primarily a college event, nonexistent in high school. Though the rich kids may have gone to Florida, most of us used the time either to look for summer jobs, recommit to previous summer jobs, or perhaps work for an extra week, if that was possible in the type of job one had. One spring, summer jobs secured, I remember going with Roger camping up on Presque Isle (Lake Erie). I do not...
Since New Mexico’s annual Lesser Prairie Chicken Festival hits the High Plains in Milnesand next weekend, I did a very logical thing — I went to look at geese. Although geese and lesser prairie chickens may seem miles apart from each other, mainly because they are, they do have certain things in common. They both have feathers. They both make weird noises — the chickens with their ear-splitting booming and the geese with their humorous honks. And they are both celebrated by hundreds of folks who spend big money to go look at...
