A U.S. Capitol Police officer was killed and another one wounded after a knife-wielding man rammed his car into them on Friday before being fatally shot by other cops, law enforcement officials said. The unidentified suspect, driving a dark blue sedan, crashed into the officers near a barricade on the Senate side of the U.S. Capitol shortly after 1 p.m., acting Capitol Police Chief Yogananda Pittman told reporters at the scene. Both officers were rushed to hospitals, and one of them later died, according to Pittman. “It is w...

AUSTIN, Texas - It once seemed unthinkable, but the Longhorns have done it. Texas has lured Chris Beard away from Texas Tech. A high-ranking UT source told the American-Statesman on Thursday that a deal has been reached. A Tech school official also confirmed the news to the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal. Red Raider Nation will be in total meltdown mode upon learning that Beard, Tech's beloved men's basketball coach, is leaving the Hub City to become the new coach at Texas, his...

SANTA FE — After years of hitting a brick wall at the Roundhouse, cannabis legalization finally burst through on Wednesday. New Mexico is poised to join a wave of other states in legalizing and taxing recreational cannabis sales, after both the House and Senate voted to approve a special session bill during a marathon day at the Roundhouse that featured lengthy debates and stinging political accusations. Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, who has pushed for creation of what could be a multimillion-dollar industry, said she would s...

  • Cats, Lady Cats set to open season Thursday

    Dave Wagner, Staff writer|Updated Mar 31, 2021

CLOVIS - In what has been a different kind of year all around, the Clovis High boys basketball team will look plenty different from the past couple of seasons. Gone are seven seniors who accounted for much of the damage from last year's squad, which went 21-9 (4-2 District 4-5A) and lost a close one to eventual champion Las Cruces High in the quarterfinals of the Class 5A state tournament. The Wildcats, who open at Roswell Goddard on Thursday night, will be heavily...

the Staff of The News|Updated Mar 30, 2021

CLOVIS — The Clovis High girls soccer team battled hard in Saturday’s District 4-5A match against Carlsbad at Leon Williams Stadium. The Lady Wildcats simply couldn’t find the back of the net. Carlsbad’s Allie Meyers finally broke the ice just over six minutes into overtime, and the Cavegirls remained unbeaten with a 1-0 win over CHS. Veteran Clovis girls coach Traci Sievers was pleased with the effort, although she would have liked a different result. “Everybody who was on the field played hard,” Sievers said. “The things...

  • Eagles complete sweep of Hounds

the Staff of The News|Updated Mar 30, 2021

OKLAHOMA CITY — It was another rough outing for the Eastern New Mexico University baseball team on Saturday. For the second time in the series, Oklahoma Christian jumped on the Greyhounds early and often and cruised to a 12-2 victory to complete a three-game sweep of the suddenly-struggling Greyhounds (5-16, 5-15 LSC), who have lost six in a row and eight of nine after posting a 4-2 mark over their previous six contests. A double steal produced one run and RBI singles by catcher Coleton Hinkle and second baseman Grant Lake m...

  • Lady Rams ousted in 4A state quarterfinals

the Staff of The News|Updated Mar 30, 2021

ARTESIA — Portales High’s volleyball squad went into Saturday’s District 4-4A and regular-season finale believing it needed to sweep Artesia and win by a certain number of points to have any chance of qualifying for Class 4A state competition this week as the No. 2 seed from the district. Give the Lady Rams credit, though. After dropping the first two sets, they roared back to edge the Lady Bulldogs 19-25, 20-25, 25-21, 25-21, 15-12. Then on Sunday, the New Mexico Activities Association rewarded PHS with an at-large berth and...

ALBUQUERQUE — Jerrick Maldonado’s bid for a Class 5A state individual cross country championship came up short on Saturday. The Clovis High senior finished third in the competition hosted by Albuquerque Academy H.S., posting a time of 15 minutes, 57.33 seconds over five kilometers (3.1 miles). Meantime, both CHS squads finished eighth in team standings, the boys with 104 points and the girls with 135. Rio Rancho Cleveland notched the boys’ team title while Rio Rancho claimed the girls’ crown. Piedra Vista’s Makua Harvey wa...

  • Wolverines cruise past overmatched Loving

the Staff of The News|Updated Mar 30, 2021

LOVING — To say Texico made short work of Loving on Saturday would probably qualify as an understatement. The Wolverines (4-0) erupted for five touchdowns in the opening stanza, then scored on the first play of the final period to cap a 53-0 victory over the winless Falcons (0-4), stopped early by the state’s 50-point mercy rule. Texico will have the opportunity to play in University Stadium on the campus of the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque on Friday when it faces also-unbeaten Eunice (4-0) in a 2 p.m. kickoff in...
