  • Crowder not running in 2016

    Kevin Wilson

Randy Crowder, one of the longest-tenured members of the Clovis City Commission, said he does not intend to run for a fourth term in 2016. He made the announcement during the Thursday meeting of the commission, though he made his plans known to other commissioners prior to the meeting. One of two commissioners from District 1, Crowder said the decision is primarily related to time constraints with his District 64 seat on the state House of Representatives. Whether on a city or state level, Crowder says he doesn’t feel c...

  • Bombs away at Highland Elementary

Staff Writer [email protected] Fifth-grade teachers at Highland Elementary issued their students a challenge this week — build an apparatus that could protect an egg from a nearly 50-foot fall. At the egg drop challenge Thursday, 11 of 54 students out of 54 succeeded with their contraptions. “No way did we think 11 would survive 46 feet,” said fifth grade teacher Michelle Evans. “We were so thrilled and surprised at the same time.” Evans said the eggs first had to su... Full story

  • Resurrection is the 'marvelous' message of Easter

    Judy Brandon

By: Judy Brandon link Judy Brandon Columnist At Easter time, some noteworthy spiritual truths emerge from the characters surrounding the resurrection story. Before Jesus’ ride into Jerusalem, Jesus told the disciples to go into the village, find a donkey and its colt, and bring them to him. The disciples did just that. When they got to Bethpage, the donkeys were there just like Jesus had said. The disciples realized again that they could take Jesus for his word because it w...

  • Christians, Jews vulnerable to terrorism

Until quite recently, when the persecution of Middle Eastern Christians was brought to my attention, my knee-jerk response was that it’s not just Christians — terrorists like ISIS hurt more Muslims than anyone. While that may be true, it is a non sequitur. In his book “Jews, God, and History,” Max I. Dimont pointed out that of the 12 million people systematically murdered by the Nazis, “7 million were Christians and 5 million were jews — 1.4 Christians for every Jew” (p.373). When talking about the extermination...
