PORTALES - Off to a 10-2 lead after three innings, the Portales High baseball team could almost taste its first win over Clovis High in years on Thursday night. In the end it nearly got away, but Rams senior Hagen Rains worked out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the seventh to preserve an 11-10 victory at Ram Field. Coming off doubleheaders the previous night, both teams' pitching depth was severely tested. In the end, Rains and CHS senior right-hander Jasiahs Jimenez were...
CLOVIS — Bobby Valderas says he just likes coaching youth basketball. Valderas, currently the eighth-grade boys coach at Gattis Middle School, formed a traveling youth squad several years ago called the Clovis Kings. This year, the team is expanding its reach to play in tournaments in Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado and Nebraska. Valderas said the Kings, whose players range in age from 14-18, trained in 2019 and would have tried to play in tournaments the next year except for the COVID-19 pandemic. Last year, he said they were a...

On this date ... 1932: A man accused of “city slicking” had been arrested in Hot Springs, Ark., after a Clovis cafe owner reported he’d been tricked out of $95. George Johnson of Clovis told police the stranger had approached him with a story claiming he had found $1,500 worth of gold dust in Alaska. The stranger wanted to send the gold to a mint in San Francisco where it could be converted into gold coin. But the man did not have the money to pay for shipping. Johnson told police he borrowed $95 and gave it to the stran...
The New Mexico State Legislature has undoubtedly made advancements to better transparency in recent years – from opening conference committees to the public, to archiving webcasts. One momentous victory was making public the legislative sponsors of individual capital outlay appropriations. For decades, each legislator handpicked which public works projects to sponsor with their discretionary allotment of funds, but because the appropriations were combined into one massive package, the public never knew which lawmaker was behi...
When you’re the only one who shows at an exercise class you have a choice: Work out on your own or slip away and backslide. Since I had already backslid the last two classes I jumped on into the pool to self-coach myself. I could have taken it easy on myself but since there were two lifeguards available to drag my big carcass out if trouble ensued, I opted for a tougher than normal workout. I was under the impression that I didn’t have abs anymore. I thought maybe they lef...
Sorry, but there is no excuse. Not that that's stopped some people from trying to find one. And yes, in case you hadn't figured it out, we're talking about the event that has crowded out Ukraine, the pandemic and gas prices as the top topic of public conversation. Meaning, of course, The Slap. And here begins perhaps the most unnecessary recap you'll ever read: Last Sunday night during the Academy Awards telecast, presenter Chris Rock made a crack about actress Jada Pinkett...
As predicted, Ketanji Brown Jackson’s confirmation hearings were pretty boring. Almost yawn-worthy. She’s a fairly boring person to begin with, which I suppose is a good thing since we don’t need to worry about high school classmates popping up with lurid stories about Michelob parties, etc. I’m glad there is no way to attack Jackson’s character, because I was truly disgusted in the lack of humanity displayed by people who inhabit the same modern country I do, but who adopted...

"I love Jesus, it's my main thing. I like to be involved in my church," Chavarria said. Chavarria's activity at church has brought her more than just...
Joe Biden is engaged in the most extensive test of whether an American president can survive elevated levels of inflation since Jimmy Carter, and it’s not going well. The latest NBC News poll has Biden at a dismal 40% approval rating that, if it doesn’t change, will end the careers of Democrats up and down the ballot in November’s midterm elections. According to the poll, only a third of people approve of Biden’s handling of the economy, a low that most presidents have ne...
Joe Biden has long been a gaffe machine when delivering a speech, answering questions from the press or interacting extemporaneously with the public during campaign events. Consider for example when he responded to a question from a supposed supporter at a campaign event, “You’re a lying, dog-faced, pony soldier.” When I first saw that quote, I parsed it because it made no sense. I know what lying is, the term dog-face or dog-faces was once used to refer to infantry soldi...
The local civic organization that has been putting up flags around Clovis on national holidays isn’t doing that anymore. According to a letter from the El Desayuno Kiwanis Foundation “we have decided to end this program due to manpower and the age of our members.” The letter detailed how the group has been working to keep the program going: “We have tried to enlist any other organization to continue this program without any success.” The letter wrapped up,“With sadness in our hearts we are closing out this program,” W...

The cost of having lunch at the Curry Residents Senior Meals Association is going to go up next month. Area residents have been able to have a meal at the CRSMA Center at 905 W. 13th St. for $3 if they are 60 or older, $6 if they are under 60. “That changes May 1,” Cherie Davis said. Davis is the CRSMA program director. “The cost goes to $4 if you are 60 or older, $8 if you’re under 60. “I’ve had some people complain,” Davis said, “But really, it’s still a pretty good price for what you get. Davis says only 30 percent of the...

Friday's first day of legal recreational sales of marijuana and other cannabis products in New Mexico attracted crowds of customers across the region. Once inside, a few customers at a time were shown varieties of dried marijuana flower with names like "banana" and "orange bud," as well as edible products, usually hard candies, gummies and chocolates infused with THC, cannabis' active ingredient. Customers dealt with employees whose title was usually "cannabis educator" but we...

Historic murals, Christmas decorations and more than 1,000 acres of grassland were the high-profile victims of a wind-whipped fire Tuesday near the old Eastern New Mexico University football field on U.S. 70. Portales Fire Chief T. J. Cathey said the blaze likely started in the highway's median, but an exact cause had not been determined late last week. No injuries were reported. Wind gusts near 50 mph helped the fire jump the highway and spread east, destroying the former Bla... Full story
