PORTALES -- A former Roosevelt County sheriff's deputy on Monday was sentenced to 182 days in the Roosevelt County jail for being in possession of stolen property. Chris McCasland, 34, was found guilty by District Judge Drew Tatum during a two-hour bench trial on Feb. 15. The charges arose from allegations McCasland was involved in 2014 burglaries in Angel Fire while he worked for its police department. He was indicted by a Roosevelt County grand jury last August for felony charges of receiving stolen property of $500 or...
SANTA FE — Two days before a critical deadline, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed civil rights legislation Wednesday that grew out of last year’s protests against racial injustice and police brutality. The civil rights measure — one of the most fiercely debated of the 60-day legislative session — will allow the filing of lawsuits in state District Court to recover financial damages if a public agency or officer violates a person’s rights under the state Bill of Rights. The law will also bar qualified immunity as a defense t...
Beta Phi Beta Phi held its monthly meeting April 3 at Cotton Patch Cafe, with Sandy Heath hosting. Eight jewel pin members and eight guests attended. During the March meeting, the chapter voted to change meeting days from Tuesdays to Saturdays. The change led to Wendy Slaughter being reinstated. The chapter also voted for new officers to be installed in the next meeting. The chapter will meet again May 1....
SANTA FE — New Mexico will join about 15 other states in requiring businesses to provide paid sick leave for their workers — but not until July of next year — under a measure signed into law Thursday by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham. The sick leave bill, House Bill 20, was one of 10 bills signed by the governor on Thursday. It generated pointed debate at the Roundhouse during the session after a year in which the COVID-19 pandemic took a toll on workers and businesses alike. Even the governor expressed misgivings about the i...

It’s almost time to get your inner piggy on. That’s right. The Portales Rotary Club’s annual (except for 2020) Chuckwagon Luncheon featuring the best smoked pork chop you’ll ever eat is back, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on April 23. I’ve got a long history of ducking out on the work involved with this event, even though I’m a long time Rotarian as well as a member and past-president of this club. Yeah, I didn’t really work the event even the year I was president. This year is...
Danny Granger doesn’t have to worry about whether he can afford to supersize that combo meal anymore. But that wasn’t always the case. The former University of New Mexico hoops legend who went onto NBA stardom, predominantly with the Indiana Pacers, can recall that two-year window from 2003 to 2005 in Albuquerque when the food choices were often more about what you could afford and not about what was best for athletic achievement. “We’d play in front of 18,000 people and we couldn’t get any help from anyone,” Granger sai...
CLOVIS — Lola De Groot certainly filled up most of the columns in the stat sheet Tuesday night. The Clovis Christian senior compiled a triple-double with 10 points, 16 rebounds and 10 blocked shots in the Lady Eagles’ 64-46 District 6-1A victory over San Jon at the CCS gym. In addition, she finished with six assists and seven steals. Meantime, sister Sofia De Groot poured in 30 points, and senior Abby Lusk added 15. It took that kind of production, too, because the Lady Coyotes (0-3, 0-1 district) played CCS tough. San Jon le...

The Tigers (1-1, 1-0 district) held the Warriors to just 13 first-half points in building a double-digit margin. Gateway (0-1, 0-1) got as close as three points in the final stanza. Junior Rylan Creighton scored 16 points and sophomore Jose Jimenez added 11 for Elida. In other boys action on Tuesday: Dora 37, Floyd 30...
LUBBOCK — Third baseman George Mendazona broke a scoreless tie with a two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the fifth and Lubbock Christian went on to hand Eastern New Mexico University an 8-0 loss on Friday in the opener of a three-game Lone Star Conference baseball series. CLOVIS — It didn’t take long for Melrose’s girls to turn a close game into a runaway on Friday night. The quick, defense-minded Lady Buffs caused havoc for Clovis Christian, tipping away numerous balls and turning them into points on the other end en route to a 59-39 District 6-1A win at the CCS gym. Senior forward Hailey Martin led Melrose (3-0, 2-0 district) with 16 points, while freshman guard Graci Odom had 12 and sophomore guard Isabelle Sena 11. The Lady Eagles (2-3, 1-3 district) opened a 7-2 lead before Melrose close...
PORTALES - A phrase made famous by Wayne Gretzky, and humorously co-opted by fictional Dunder-Mifflin manager Michael Scott, goes, "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take." You also miss 100% of the shots you don't get to take, and that summed up Portales' 63-33 win Thursday night over Texico. Behind a combination of Portales' pressure defense and a Wolverine squad low on varsity experience, a 36-turnover night doomed the visiting Wolverines from the start. "They put...
ARTESIA — After posting three relatively close wins to start the season, including two that went into overtime, Clovis High’s boys tasted defeat for the first time on Thursday. Artesia took the lead at the free throw line in the closing seconds, and the Bulldogs withstood a final long-range 3 try from junior guard Elijah Garcia to edge the Wildcats 59-58. If nothing else, CHS boys coach Jaden Isler said the end-of-game tests should serve his team well with District 4-5A play looming next week. “We’ve been battle-tested,” he s...
