  • McGee: Doing nothing requires planning

    Grant McGee Local columnist

The Lady of the House and I had a difference of opinion as to what one does while on vacation. We recently took a few days off and visited the Gulf Coast. I had visions of lying around doing nothing, maybe flipping through the pages of a good book. The Lady of the House had a list of things she wanted to do and places she wanted to see. "A vacation is for relaxing, reading a book, doing nothing," I said as my hoped-for-idle days began. "You can do that at home," she said. "You CAN'T do that at home because there's always... Full story

  • Treasure hunting may be its own reward

    Clyde Davis CMI columnist

It's a trending item on the Internet, the wealthy New Mexican who reportedly hid several million dollars worth of gold somewhere in the wilds of our fair state. Suffering from cancer at the time, the elderly gent is now happily cancer free, but has no plans to recoup the gold, nor to tell anyone where it is. The mystery remains to be solved, and the prize claimed, by the person or persons who unravel the clues. It seems like a child's fantasy game, but this is the real thing, and it branches into the subject of buried and... Full story

  • You should hope I don't dance

    Karl Terry CMI columnist

"But you can't dance," exclaimed my wife after I made my announcement. That one really hurt, because it was true. But the challenge was nearly more than I could resist. Nearly — but I could resist. A little over a month ago I got a visit from a volunteer representing the Local Collaborative of mental health agencies (LC9). I later found that I had agreed to either be a celebrity dancer (or find one) for a fundraising event called Dancing With Our Stars. Growing up in the Church of Christ in Portales in the early 1970s, d... Full story

    CMI staff

SAN ANTONIO — Eastern New Mexico University's baseball team is getting down to the nitty-gritty if it hopes to make the Lone Star Conference's post-season tournament. Incarnate Word took advantage of eight walks and four hit batsmen to put the game out of reach early on Friday in a 13-1 rout, called after 6 1/2 innings by the Lone Star Conference's 10-run rule which goes into effect after seven in nine-inning games. ENMU (19-17, 6-11 LSC) now stands two games behind the Cardinals and West Texas A&M (both 22-15, 8-9), who a... Full story

Carlsbad, the defending Class 5A state champion, pounded out 17 hits in a 14-3 win in the opener. Lott,...

A meeting to discuss the $500 million Ute Water Pipeline Project escalated into a screaming match Friday in Portales between residents who oppose the project and local officials addressing their concerns. At one point police — who were asked by city officials to attend the meeting for security reasons — asked an audience member to control himself or he would be removed from the meeting. Members of the Concerned Citizens of Curry and Roosevelt Counties made their plea, often times with yelling and passionate discourse, ask... Full story

  • In search of ponies: Marijuana or pills, be careful with medication

    Sharna Johnson Local columnist

It's funny enough, all right. Staggering and woozy, a dog's legs may each go in different directions, or, afraid to challenge the suddenly accelerated rotation of the planet, it may become a pooch puddle, trying to melt into the floor and hoping it will stop. Others turn in clumsy circles or imitate living bobble heads. There are apparently so many dogs doing it and people enjoy the strange behavior of wacky weed influenced dogs so much, the videos flood the Internet. But while dogs seem to love the stuff and their people...
