Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid decided to trigger a partial nuclear option in 2013. He said the unprecedented move was necessary to fix a broken system. While Republicans bemoaned the fact that Reid’s actions were an exercise in raw power, Reid was playing a long game. He had just placed his party in a classic win-win situation. Although Republicans vowed to reciprocate when they reclaimed the majority, Reid knew they had never filibustered any judicial nominee who could wi...
Property rights is a pillar of civilization — a pillar that is crumbling from neglect, abuse, and misunderstanding. As long as your use of your property doesn’t damage other people or their property in a tangible way, it’s no one else’s business. This applies to trash, vermin, odors and dust, holes, and nuclear waste. What if your mess won’t stay put on your property? What about someone who drains the aquifer? Arbitration and restitution could ease these sorts of problems,...
ST. VRAIN — Most of the cows have names. Mocha is the color of chocolate coffee. Cake likes to eat cattle cake. Cheetos will take Cheetos from your hand through the fence. The Young family’s cows were in danger on Saturday afternoon. Fire broke out just west of their pasture. “We’d left the house and gone to town. We’d been gone maybe 10 minutes,” LaShawna Young said, “when a neighbor called in a panic and said we needed to get home.” Within 20 minutes, “the flames were 10-foot high, already at our fence line,” Young said...
CLOVIS — One of these days, coach Brandi Thomas figures, the Clovis High Lady Wildcats are going to break through. The Lady Wildcats left just enough runners on base to stay winless for the season, including the bases loaded at the end of a six-run seventh in an 8-7 setback to Eldorado in the second game of Tuesday's District 2-6A makeup doubleheader at Lady Wildcat Field. Eldorado won the opener 11-1 in five innings on the 10-run rule. The Eagles didn't get to the run rule i...
ROSWELL — When it comes to Class 6A golf this year, it may be a case of there’s Rio Rancho Cleveland and then everybody else. That’s the way it looked, anyway, in Tuesday’s Coyote Classic, hosted by Roswell High at Spring River Golf Course. The Storm ran away with both team titles, and the Cleveland girls may have been more impressive than the boys. Cleveland’s girls posted a team score of 326, while Roswell Goddard was second at 361, edging Clovis High by three shots. Meantime, the Storm finished at 305 on the boys side...
On this date ... 1992: Clovis police were preparing to institute a bicycle patrol. The program was designed "to put our officers in the community," Capt. Bill Carey said. Officers Dewayne Williams and Frank Gutierrez would be the primary bike patrol officers, but police said they hoped to expand the program later in the year." 1977: Clovis...

As messy as the political battle got — GOP transgression, Democrat retaliation, an unprecedented partisan filibuster and, finally, the “nuclear option” — the U.S. Supreme Court has a highly qualified new justice on its bench. Unfortunately, the political fight could well have negative long-term impact on the U.S. Senate and its formerly cherished reputation as a “deliberative” body, and it makes the nation’s highest court even more politicized. This was a bloody, partisan fight reminiscent of a running playground spat but wit...
