  • Life in small town has rewards

    Betty Williamson|Updated Apr 12, 2018

Sometimes life in a small town feels a little confining. But then — if you’re lucky — you have one of those moments that reminds you of the very best part of being in a rural community. I lost a decorative pin in Portales last Friday. It wasn’t especially valuable, but it was sentimental. A dear friend made it, a tiny prairie chicken created from various metals. It was on my shoulder at lunchtime; by late afternoon it was missing. This weekend was a whirlwind and I didn’t... Full story

  • Who you gonna call?

    David Grieder|Updated Apr 11, 2018

CLOVIS — Before the ambulance or the fire truck or the police cruiser, there’s usually a phone call. Before you speak with any officers, you talk with a dispatcher, sometimes called the first of the first responders. Taking those calls is no small job, either. There are usually only two, sometimes three dispatchers on duty during any given shift, and they have the formidable task of prioritizing multiple calls at once, ranging from a dire emergency to an accidental dial, while also coordinating follow-up information and ser...

  • Motion to transfer Jouett denied

The Staff of The News|Updated Apr 11, 2018

CLOVIS — A motion to transfer accused teenage shooter Nathaniel Jouett to an adolescent treatment facility in Albuquerque was denied this week, following a daylong hearing Friday in Clovis. Jouett, 17, is accused of killing two and injuring four Aug. 28 at the Clovis-Carver Public Library. Judge James Hudson, of Roswell, said “the ideal care proposed by the defense is not mandated by the right to reasonable medical care and would unnecessarily impede the need to detain Mr. Jouett as determined by the court,” refer... Full story

    Eric Murray|Updated Apr 11, 2018

PORTALES — With the annual Green and Silver spring football game quickly approaching, the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds are just trying to fine-tune some things on both sides of the ball. However, despite some intense practices and a scrimmage last Saturday, ENMU's true progress this spring won't be realized until the Hounds take the field at 6 p.m. Friday. "It's a game-like situation," second-year head coach Kelley Lee said of the Green and Silver game. "We scrimmage and w...

  • Prep softball: Artesia blows past Portales

The Staff of The News|Updated Apr 11, 2018

ARTESIA — It was a rough day for Portales softball, to say the least. If it wasn't already a tall enough task in having to play 5A's No. 1 team in Artesia in a doubleheader on the road Tuesday, trying to find ways to manufacture runs and prevent runs proved to be too big of an obstacle for the Rams. Artesia needed just three innings to run-rule Portales in Game 1, 16-0. As for Game 2, the Bulldogs won 11-0 in five innings, but the more impressive stat about that game was K...

Although no immediate dollar value was placed on the damage, the building was considered a complete loss. 1978: Mrs....

  • Continuing the fight against bullying

    Cindy Kleyn-Kennedy|Updated Apr 11, 2018

Bullying has been defined as the “use of superior strength or influence to intimidate someone, typically to force him or her to do what one wants.” Somehow the definition doesn’t sound as bad as bullying is. Like it or not, bullying has always been around, as long as people have lived together in communities. As long as imbalances in power occur, the potential for bullying exists, and this is unlikely to change. Not surprisingly, the field of research into the preva...
