  • Duane Ryan's family gathering memories to share

    Betty Williamson, Local columnist|Updated May 8, 2023

Most of us old enough to remember the first time humans set foot on the moon -- July 20, 1969 -- have a memory of that day. We know where we were, what we were doing. Tamara Ryan Polich’s recollection has a special twist. “We watched the moon landing in this house,” Polich told me Saturday, “on a television set that our dad built.” Tamara and three of her siblings — Mike Ryan, Marla Ryan Chrisman, and John Ryan — were gathered in the Portales home they grew up in to share stor...

  • Faith: Best for churches to raise their voices together

    Curtis Shelburne, Religion columnist|Updated Apr 11, 2023

I was sleeping soundly on a nice Saturday morning. It was, to be exact, what many Christians have called for long ages “Holy Saturday,” the Saturday before Easter. It had been for us a very nice Holy Week indeed. In our little community, for much longer than the 38 years my family and I have been here, we’ve had a nice tradition sponsored by our Ministerial Alliance. A Palm Sunday Community Service, hosted at one of our churches, gets us off to a great start. Then, begun...

  • Opinion: Trump charges for political points

    Michael Reagan, Syndicated content|Updated Apr 11, 2023

Everyone knows the felony charges against Donald Trump for paying hush-money to a porn star are ridiculous. Everyone knows that charging Trump with 34 counts of falsifying business records was just a slimy political stunt by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. Everyone knows that Bragg’s legally dubious indictment is just the latest desperate attempt by Democrats to prevent Trump from running for president in 2024. And, along with a handful of honest Democrats and l...

  • Opinion: Those magical dancing chickens need protection

Writers on the Range, Syndicated content|Updated Apr 11, 2023

What I remember most about that dark early morning of crouching on the prairie is the rhythmic sound of pounding. It was so loud, I wondered if someone had put a microphone near the skinny legs of the dozen birds dancing on the turf. As the sun rose above the horizon in southeastern New Mexico, the male lesser prairie chickens continued their ritual performance, each hoping to entice a female. They strutted, leaped in the air with feathers spread, and bowed, but the greatest thrill was watching them puff up the garish, red-or...

  • Opinion: Mugshots may be out of date tool

    Walter Rubel, Syndicated content|Updated Apr 11, 2023

Do we have the right to see Donald Trump’s mug shot? Do we have the right to see anybody’s mug shot if they haven’t had their day in court yet? The second question came up during this year’s Sunshine Week event, which featured an outstanding panel of local journalists talking about crime reporting. The consensus was that, while we all have the right to view any public document, the media also has a responsibility as to what it publishes. Bob Moore, the former editor of the El Paso Times who is now heading El Paso Matters...

  • Uncle Mike's a place where musicians come to jam

Steve Hansen, The Staff of The News|Updated Apr 11, 2023

It is hard to describe just what kind of venue Uncle Mike's in Portales is, but many musicians who play rock music in a band in eastern New Mexico have performed and jammed with others there. The owner, Mike Morrison, who is a drummer, calls it a "live music venue," which about sums it up. "It's a place to have bands and musicians play," he said, but other performers, including poets and comedians, have mounted Uncle Mike's stage, according to Jason Jouett, who seemed to be in...
